Lenalidomide in High-Risk Myelodysplastic Syndrome and Acute Myeloid Leukemia with Chromosome 5 Abnormalities
Characterization of genomically amplified segments using PCR: optimizing relative-PCR for reliable and simple gene expression and gene copy analyses
Gene amplification is one of the mechanisms for oncogene activation in solid tumors. The size of the amplified regions may vary considerably among individual tumors, and more than one gene may be affected within the same amplicon. The main objective in analyzing genomic amplifications has therefore been to map the shortest region involved and to identify genes with increased expression as a result
Von Willebrand: The scientist, the disease, the factor, and the treatment
Preprogastrin-releasing peptide messenger ribonucleic acid: neuroanatomical localization in rat brain by in situ hybridization with synthetic oligodeoxynucleotide probes
Gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) is a 27 amino acid peptide that is present in both the central and peripheral nervous systems and that shares immunological and functional properties with the amphibian peptide, bombesin. GRP has multiple putative biological functions including effects on feeding behaviour and carbohydrate metabolism, body temperature, and effects on hormone release, but little is k
Mechanical performance and electromyography during repeated maximal isokinetic shoulder forward flexions in female cleaners with and without myalgia of the trapezius muscle and in healthy controls
This cross-sectional study aimed at investigating the influence of occupational exposure to static and highly repetitive work involving the neck and shoulder muscles, myalgia of and tender point in the trapezius muscle on biomechanical output, and electromyogram (EMG) variables (mean frequency MNF, signal amplitude and ability to relax) during maximal forward flexions of the shoulder muscles. Grou
Cardiovascular nursing in RN and higher education in Swedish universities: a national survey.
Cardiovascular nursing (CVN) is rapidly developing and has accumulated a large amount of evidence to support interventions aimed at reducing suffering and hastening recovery. However, knowledge of the extent and content of CVN training in Sweden is lacking. The aim of this study was therefore to identify and describe CVN in the Swedish RN education as well as in higher education, with reference to
Arrays of Ge islands on Si(001) grown by means of electron-beam pre-patterning
We show that well-defined arrays of self-assembled Ge dots on Si(001) can be grown after pre-patterning the Si surface by means of an electron beam. The electron beam produces C-containing growth masks. The overgrowth of these masks with Si results in pits at the Si surface, in and around which Ge dots nucleate selectively. A manifold of different arrays can be obtained. Almost perfect arrays of q
A comparative kinetic study of modified Pt(dppf)Cl-2 complexes and their interactions with L-cys and L-met
With the success of cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II)), strong interest has developed in the application of inorganic metal complexes to the treatment of cancer. Research has focused on platinum( II) complexes with a variety of spectator ligands that provide novel physicochemical properties. In this paper we report a kinetic study of 1', 1'-bis(diphenylphosphino) ferrocenedichloroplatinu
Thiol-specific and nonspecific interactions between DNA and gold nanoparticles
The contribution of nonspecific interactions to the overall interactions of thiol-ssDNA and dsDNA macromolecules with gold nanoparticles was investigated. A systematic investigation utilizing dynamic light scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy has been per-formed to directly measure and visualize the changes in particle size and appearance during functionalization of gold nanop
Selective recovery of lactate dehydrogenase using affinity foam.
Selective isolation of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) from porcine muscle extract was studied using foam generated from the vigorous stirring of a non-ionic surfactant, Triton X-114 derivatized with Cibacron blue. The cloud point of the surfactant-dye conjugate was higher than that of the native Triton X-114, and also the foam prepared from the affinity surfactant was more rigid taking a longer time
Creating Critical Mass of Research Excellence in the Region: The Case of Scottish Research Pooling Initiatives
This article examines the recent development of, and policy rationale for research pooling initiatives in Scotland. Research pooling initiatives have been started with financial support from the Scottish Funding Council in order to form inter-organizational international critical mass of research excellence at universities at the regional level. This article examines the development of university
Ultrastructural characterization of dissociated embryonic ventral mesencephalic tissue treated with neuroprotectants.
Poor survival and differentiation of grafted dopamine neurons limits the application of clinical transplantation in Parkinson’s disease. The survival of grafted dopamine neurons is only improved by a factor of 2–3 by adding neuroprotectants during tissue preparation. We used dye exclusion cell viability and electron microscopy to investigate the effects of the caspase inhibitor ac-YVAD-cmk and the
Monitoring the bioavailability of FEIBA with a thrombin generation assay
Background: Hemophilia A patients with inhibitors are generally treated with preparations containing activated coagulation factors to achieve hemostasis by bypassing factor (F)VIII. Objectives: We developed an assay for monitoring the kinetic of thrombin generation in human FVIII inhibitor plasma reconstituted in vitro with activated prothrombin complex concentrate, FEIBA, and in plasma samples fr
Laminin {alpha}1 Chain Corrects Male Infertility Caused by Absence of Laminin {alpha}2 Chain.
Laminins are important for basement membrane structure and function. The laminin alpha2 chain is a major component of muscle basement membranes, and mutations in the laminin alpha2 gene lead to congenital muscular dystrophy in humans and mice. Although the laminin alpha2 chain is prominently expressed in testicular basement membranes, its role in testis has remained unclear. Here, we show that lam
Functional defect of hematopoietic stem cells with abrogated hypoxia induced expression of vascular endothelial gowth factor
Principles help to analyse but often give no solution--secondary prevention after a cardiac event.
The aim of this paper is to investigate whether or not ethical conflicts can be identified, analysed and solved using ethical principles. The relation between the physician and the patient with ischemic heart disease (IHD) as life style changes are recommended in a secondary prevention program is used as an example. The principal persons affected (the patient and his or her spouse) and the ethical
Assessing requirements compliance scenarios in system platform subcontracting
In the mobile industry, system platforms are offered to device developers to enable rapid product development while sharing expensive technology development investments. This paper presents a framework for assessment of requirements engineering collaboration related to statements-of-compliance negotiation in platform subcontracting. The framework includes a classification of platform compliance sc
Small-scale magnetic fields on late-type M-dwarfs
We performed kinematic studies of the evolution of small-scale magneticfields in the surface layers of M-dwarfs. We solved the inductionequation for a prescribed velocity field, magnetic Reynolds number ReM,and boundary conditions in a Cartesian box, representing a volumecomprising the optically thin stellar atmosphere and the uppermost partof the optically thick convective envelope. The velocity
Spatial population dynamics and the design of marine reserves
The failure of many fisheries world-wide, and the concern about marine biodiversity, has sparked a growing interest in the spatial aspects of harvested populations. If a population conforms to the Ideal Free Distribution and that one of the habitats is set aside as a reserve free from harvesting, the design of reserves may be problematic. If a substantial proportion of the unharvested population i
