Indication for pharmacological treatment is often lacking: a cross-sectional study on the quality of drug therapy among the elderly.

Although the elderly have a substantially higher drug use than younger patients, even after adjustment for multimorbidity, there is limited knowledge about the elderly's indication for treatment. It is essential for elderly patients to have a well-planned drug therapy. The first step towards a correct and safe drug therapy is to ensure that the patient's drugs have an indication, i.e. correct diag

Etnicitet i ungdomsvården. Yrkesverksammas och ungdomarnas muntliga framställningar

I denna studie analyseras muntliga etnicitetsgestaltningar hos olika aktörer i ungdomsvården. Undersökningen uppmärksammar etniciteten när den uttrycks verbalt och icke-verbalt, hur den uttrycks samt i vilka situationer kategoriseringar synliggörs implicit eller explicit. Studiens syfte är: att analysera när och hur etnicitet aktualiseras genom kategoriseringar i ungdomsvården, att uppmärksamma hThe aim of this study is to analyze when and how ethnicity is actualised through categorisations in Swedish youth-care, to attract attention to how these categorisations are indicated and point out how the narrators own ethnic identity is shaped and upheld through different markings. The report is based on 109 interviews conducted with different actors in the youth-care and my field-notes made in

Effects of simvastatin on apolipoprotein M in vivo and in vitro.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate effects of lipid lowering drug, simvastatin, on apolipoprotein M expression in the hyperlipidemic mice and in hepatic cell line, HepG2 cells. METHODS: Swiss male mice were randomly divided into the high fat group and control group, and were intragastrically fed with 0.9% saline (control group) or lipid emulsion (high fat group) at the daily dosage of 15 ml/kg body weight

Sequelae of Treatment in Long-term Survivors of Testis Cancer

Context: Testicular cancer patients are often diagnosed at a young age, and because of the advances in the treatment of this disease, the vast majority have a normal life expectancy after therapy. Thus, recognition of the long-term sequelae of treatment (ie, surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy) is particularly important in these patients. Objective: To review the adverse effects and the r

Molecular screening for new fusion genes in cancer

Gene fusions arising from translocations make an important contribution to the development of cancer. A new study uses high-throughput sequencing to characterize such fusions at an unprecedented level of resolution.

Comparing Polish and Scandinavian flint using visual and chemical analysis: some preliminary results

In this brief article we present initial results of chemical analyses of flint samples from six Polish sites and one Ukrainian site near the Polish border. The purpose is to examine the extent to which Polish flint resembles or differs chemically from Scandinavian flint. Flint from five of the seven analysed localities proved distinguishable from Scandinavian flint on the basis of chemical analysi

Asymptotic properties of particle filter-based maximum likelihood estimators for state space models

We study the asymptotic performance of approximate maximum likelihood estimators for state space models obtained via sequential Monte Carlo methods. The state space of the latent Markov chain and the parameter space are assumed to be compact. The approximate estimates are computed by, firstly, running possibly dependent particle filters on a fixed grid in the parameter space, yielding a pointwise

Quantification of cystatin C by time-resolved fluorometry-based immunoassays

Plasma cystatin C is increasingly used as a marker of glomerular filtration rate. Most assays for cystatin C are based on turbidimetric or nephelometric detection and studies of other rapid methods are limited. This study aimed to develop and compare differently configured immunoassays for quantification of plasma cystatin C, using recombinant cystatin C and two cystatin C-specific antibodies. Met

Density fitting with auxiliary basis sets from Cholesky decompositions

Recent progress in the use of Cholesky decomposition techniques within the density fitting approximation of two-electron integrals is reviewed with emphasis on the theoretical background. Special attention is paid to the fact that errors due to the density fitting approximation can be controlled by constructing auxiliary basis sets by means of Cholesky decomposition of either the entire or certain

High-grade localized metasomatic alteration of the granitic gneiss surrounding a clinopyroxene-rich pegmatoid dyke: Sondrum stenhuggeriet, Halmstad, SW Sweden

The Sondrum stone quarry (Halmstad, SW Sweden) exposes a transition from migmatized granitic gneissic country rock into a foliated clinopyroxene-free granitic gneiss, and then a central pegmatoid dyke dominated by clinopyroxene megacrysts. This transition zone represents a fracture-controlled, fluid-alteration zone that developed under conditions of 650-700 degrees C and 790MPa. Mineral chemical t

Constraining age distributions of groundwater from public supply wells in diverse hydrogeological settings in Scania, Sweden

Twenty-five public supply wells throughout the hydrogeologically diverse region of Scania, Southern Sweden are subjected to environmental tracer analysis (3H–3He, 4He, CFCs, SF6 and for one well only also 85Kr and 39Ar) to study well and aquifer vulnerability and evaluate possibilities of groundwater age distribution assessment. We find CFC and SF6 concentrations well above solubility equilibrium

Satellite line mapping in Eu3+-Ce3+ and Pr3+-Ce3+ codoped Y2SiO5

In this work we perform a high-resolution spectroscopic investigation of Eu3+-Ce3+ and Pr3+-Ce3+ codoped Y2SiO5 crystals. Satellite line spectra were recorded at low temperatures around the Eu3+:F-7(0) -> D-5(0) and the Pr3+:H-3(4) -> D-1(2) transitions. It is observed that the incorporation of Ce3+ as a codopant notably changes the Eu3+ and Pr3+ satellite line patterns. Satellite lines measured i

Novel insights into the role of serotonin in control of β-cell fuction

Typ 2 diabetes, tidigare ofta benämnd ”åldersdiabetes” Inadequate insulin secretion is a central component in the development of Diabetes Mellitus, resulting from reduced pancreatic β-cell mass, as well as diminished β-cell function. Islet produced 5-hydroxy tryptamine (5-HT) is suggested to regulate insulin secretion and β-cell mass in rodents during pregnancy and in metabolically challenged states. However, the role of 5-HT in control of insulin rel

IGF, PI3K and HIF-2 in Normal and Tumor Development

Cancer är en komplex sjukdom och varje tumör är speciell på sitt sCells adapt to oxygen shortage, hypoxia, by inducing a transcriptional shift governed mainly by Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF)-1 and HIF-2. In various cancer forms, including neuroblastoma, high expression of HIF-2α correlates with disseminated disease and poor outcome. It has become evident that HIF-1 and HIF-2 are differentially regulated over time and by oxygen levels. HIF-2α is expressed in a

Hearing loss and a supportive tactile signal in a navigation system: Effects on driving behavior and eye movements

An on-road study was conducted to evaluate a complementary tactile navigation signal on driving behaviour and eye movements for drivers with hearing loss (HL) compared to drivers with normal hearing (NH). 32 participants (16 HL and 16 NH) performed two preprogrammed navigation tasks. In one, participants received only visual information, while the other also included a vibration in the seat to gui

Quantitative serial imaging of an I-124 anti-CEA monoclonal antibody in tumor-bearing mice

Objective: The 4.2-day half-life I-124 favors its use for positron emission tomography (PET) of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). However, high positron energy and beta(+)-associated cascade gamma rays pose image resolution and background noise problems for I-124. This study evaluated quantitative PET of an I-124 mAb in tumor-bearing mice. Methods: An R4 microPET (TM) (Siemens/CTIMI, Knoxville, TN) wa

Multi-generational long-distance migration of insects: studying the painted lady butterfly in the Western Palaearctic

Long-range, seasonal migration is a widespread phenomenon among insects, allowing them to track and exploit abundant but ephemeral resources over vast geographical areas. However, the basic patterns of how species shift across multiple locations and seasons are unknown in most cases, even though migrant species comprise an important component of the temperate-zone biota. The painted lady butterfly
