Public safety investigations - a new evolutionary step in safety enhancement?

Over the past years, natural catastrophes have disrupted society: the tsunami in December 2004, hurricane Katrina in the Gulf of Mexico, the earthquakes in Pakistan in 2005, causing massive material destruction and human suffering. In addition, technological accidents in transport, energy and process industry undermine the public faith in risk management, while the uncontrolled spreading of diseas

Abstract in UndeterminedThis article reports a consensus that was reached at an Advanced Workshop in Experimental Hypnosis held as part of the joint annual conference of the British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis (BSMDH) and the British Society of Experimental and Clinical Hypnosis(BSECH). The unanimous consensus was that conventional definitions of hypnosis and hypnotizability are logical

Automating Operating Procedure Synthesis for Batch Processes: Part II Implementation and Application

A framework for operating procedure synthesis in batch processes was presented in part on of this paper. In this part, we present, iTOPS (intelligent tool for operating procedure synthesis), a knowledge based system for implementing the concepts outlined in the framework. iTOPS has been developed in Gensym's G2 expert system shell. The architecture of iTOPS, that consists of components that closel

Multiplexing efficiency of MIMO antennas with user effects

Recently, the multiplexing efficiency metric is proposed for characterizing the MIMO performance of terminal antennas. Here, we show that it can also provide useful insights into the impact of user on MIMO terminal performance. In particular, the impact of user hand and head on the efficiency and correlation of a MIMO antenna can be conveniently quantified using the multiplexing efficiency metric.

Handheld Computing from a Designer’s Perspective - A 10-Year Review—2001-2010

This review has examined research on handheld computing from a design science perspective. The review was underpinned by the assumption that handheld computing has specific features compared to stationary computing that ought to be managed in order to harness the possibilities of handheld computing. The purpose of this study was to identify areas of investigation in handheld computing from a desi

The Role of Students in the Co-creation of Transformational Knowledge and Sustainability Experiments: Experiences from Sweden, Japan and the USA

Accompanying realisations that engagement of multiple societal sectors (academia, industry, government, citizenry) and disciplines is required for formulating effective responses to complex sustainability challenges, calls for new forms of knowledge production are increasing in magnitude, both inside and outside the university. In parallel, experiences from the United Nations Decade of Education f

Möjligheter och utmaningar med ämnesintegrerad kommunikationsträning

At Lund University two projects were conducted with the aim to strengthen and systematise students’ communication training in science and engineering education. The core of the projects was a course on communication teaching, addressing the content teachers. During the course the participants developed, implemented, evaluated and reported on a communication component in their courses. In parallel,

I denna studie gör författarna en kritisk analys av beThe contemporary discussion about how to define and measure the quality of services is dominated by a subjective perspective and quality is usually grounded in the customers perception. This conceptualisation of quality (perceived service quality) is well established in business and research. In contrast, this study is an argument for an intersubjective perspective grounded in language and demonst
