Origin of a surface state above the Fermi level on Ge(001) and Si(001) studied by temperature-dependent ARPES and LEED
Variable temperature photoemission studies in the literature have revealed the presence of a surface state above the Fermi level on clean Ge(001). We present photoemission and low energy electron diffraction results from Ge(001) obtained between 185 and 760 K. Our measurements show a peak above the Fermi level with a maximum intensity at a sample temperature of around 625 K. At higher temperatures

Empowerment is a concept and a method in social work associated with liberation from oppression. Some paradoxes inherent in the concept and method of empowerment, however, lead to questioning the contradiction between freedom and force that is usually framed by “empowerment”. This dissertation investigates how empowerment is created in a concrete language and an integration project directed toward
Human Embryonic Stem Cells - Constitutive Gene Expression and Differentiation Towards Definitive Endoderm and Posterior Foregut Endoderm
Abstract More than 300 million people are suffering from diabetes worldwide and the numbers of diabetic patients are increasing. Today´s treatments mainly rely on daily insulin injections. This help people to control blood glucose levels but still many patients suffer from the many complications associated with diabetes. Transplantations of islet cells are an alternative treatment that could help
Effect of a proximal substrate on plasmon propagation in silver nanowires
We investigate how the properties of a nearby substrate modify the excitation and propagation of plasmons in subwavelength silver wires. With decreasing nanowire-substrate separation, the in-coupling efficiency shows strongly oscillatory behavior due to coherent interference. The plasmon damping increases with decreasing separation due to an increased coupling of the nanowire plasmons to the photo

Measurement of flow harmonics with multi-particle cumulants in Pb plus Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector
ATLAS measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy in lead-lead collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV are shown using a dataset of approximately 7 mu b(-1) collected at the LHC in 2010. The measurements are performed for charged particles with transverse momenta 0.5 < p(T) < 20 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.5. The anisotropy is characterized by the Fourier coeff

Clinical presentation, prognostic factors and epidemiology of ischemic bowel disease in the very old
Background: Acute ischemic bowel disease (AIBD) is a potentially death-threatening vascular emergency predominantly affecting the elderly (>65 years). The prognosis is dismal and early diagnosis and treatment is of vital importance for the outcome. Clinical presentation is unspecific. The five studies were retrospective. The patients were retrieved from Malmö University Hospital. The aim with thi
Influence of the Solvent on the Self-Assembly of a Modified Amyloid Beta Peptide Fragment. I. Morphological Investigation
The solvent-induced transition between self-assembled structures formed by the peptide AAKLVFF is studied via electron microscopy, light scattering, and spectroscopic techniques. The peptide is based on a core fragment of the amyloid beta-peptide, KLVFF, extended by two alanine residues. AAKLVFF exhibits distinct structures of twisted fibrils in water or nanotubes in methanol. For intermediate wat
Search for extra dimensions in diphoton events from proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV in the ATLAS detector at the LHC
The large difference between the Planck scale and the electroweak scale, known as the hierarchy problem, is addressed in certain models through the postulate of extra spatial dimensions. A search for evidence of extra spatial dimensions in the diphoton channel has been performed using the full set of proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV recorded in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN La
Nuclear expression of STAT6 distinguishes solitary fibrous tumor from histologic mimics
Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is composed of spindled to ovoid cells in a patternless architecture with prominent stromal collagen and hemangiopericytoma-like vessels. Some tumors show hypercellularity, nuclear atypia, and significant mitotic activity; the latter feature in particular often portends an aggressive clinical course. SFT can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from other benign mesen
The Subtleties of Dissolution and Regeneration of Cellulose: Breaking and Making Hydrogen Bonds
Cellulose dissolution and regeneration are old topics that have recently gained renewed attention. This is reflected in both applications - earlier and novel - and in scientific controversies. There is a current discussion in the literature on the balance between hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions in controlling the solution behavior of cellulose. Some of the key ideas are recalled.

Modelling the impact of climate change and atmospheric N deposition on French forests biodiversity.
A dynamic coupled biogeochemical-ecological model was used to simulate the effects of nitrogen deposition and climate change on plant communities at three forest sites in France. The three sites had different forest covers (sessile oak, Norway spruce and silver fir), three nitrogen loads ranging from relatively low to high, different climatic regions and different soil types. Both the availability
Charismatic leadership in resistance to change
In Weber's writing and in leadership theory, charismatic leadership is associated with social change However, the importance and desirability of charismatic leaders in change processes can be questioned, as well as the notion that charismatic leaders are invariably proponents of change There are documented cases of charismatic leaders in religious and political contexts who have opposed ongoing ch
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, a new method for rapid determination of total organic and inorganic carbon and biogenic silica concentration in lake sediments
We demonstrate the use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIRS) to make quantitative measures of total organic carbon (TOC), total inorganic carbon (TIC) and biogenic silica (BSi) concentrations in sediment. FTIRS is a fast and cost-effective technique and only small sediment samples are needed (0.01 g). Statistically significant models were developed using sediment samples from northern
Differential Islet and Incretin Hormone Responses in Morning vs. Afternoon after Standardized Meal in Healthy Men.
Context: The insulin response to meal ingestion is more rapid in the morning than in the afternoon. Whether this is explained by a corresponding variation in the incretin hormones is not known. Objective: Assess islet and incretin hormones after meal ingestion in the morning versus afternoon. Design, Settings and Participants: Ingestion at 8am and at 5pm of a standardized meal (524 kcal) in health
The influence of Poisson's ratio on the excitability of the first higher symmetric (S1) zero-group velocity Lamb mode.
The impact echo (IE) method is widely used in non-destructive testing of concrete plate like structures but has proved difficult to apply on asphalt pavements. Observed low IE resonance amplitudes on asphalt have been attributed to larger material damping but the present study shows that it may also be an effect from a larger Poisson's ratio. The IE frequency corresponds to the stationary resonanc
