Stepwise Disproportionation in Polyelectrolyte Complexes

Structural properties and the topology of polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) formed in solution have been investigated under different conditions by Monte Carlo simulations using a coarse-grained model. The extension of individual polyions has been characterized by their radius of gyration, whereas the composition of the complexes has been investigated by their net charge and their internal topologi

Agreement between two- and three-dimensional transperineal ultrasound methods in assessing fetal head descent in the first stage of labor

Objective To study intraobserver repeatability and intermethod agreement between two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) transperineal ultrasound methods in assessing fetal head descent during the first stage of labor. Methods Fetal head descent was measured with transperineal ultrasound as the fetal head-perineum distance and the angle of progression in 106 primiparous women with prolonged first sta

Delivery of crop pollination services is an insufficient argument for wild pollinator conservation.

There is compelling evidence that more diverse ecosystems deliver greater benefits to people, and these ecosystem services have become a key argument for biodiversity conservation. However, it is unclear how much biodiversity is needed to deliver ecosystem services in a cost-effective way. Here we show that, while the contribution of wild bees to crop production is significant, service delivery is

Mentoring Radiology Residents in Clinical and Translational Research.

To be an effective mentor at any level is always a challenge and requires a dedication to teaching and mentorship and being prepared to devote a significant proportion of one's time. But if you are open-minded and deeply care for your mentee, you have the opportunity to be a successful mentor. This presentation is based on personal experience of mentoring radiology residents, doctoral students, an

Mitochondrial and chromosomal genomics in type 2 diabetes

Understanding the mechanisms of complex polygenic diseases like type 2 diabetes (T2D) is as complex as their nature. Cellular processes involved in glucose homeostasis need high and reliable energy supply. Mitochondria are the major energy producers in mammalian cells. Since majority of the mitochondrial genes are encoded by the nuclear genome, a tightly regulated and coordinated nuclear-mitochond

Sexuality of 15/16-Year-Old Girls and Boys With and Without Modest Disabilities

Girls and boys with disabilities, 15-16 years of age, report a significantly higher rate of sexual debut than adolescents with no disabilities. In a society where a young person with a disability often is considered to have an essentially asexual status, there can be several fronts for adolescents to fight. The survey Life and Health-Young People 2005 was completed by 3,084 adolescents attending m

High order splitting schemes with complex timesteps and their application in mathematical finance

High order splitting schemes with complex timesteps are applied to Kolmogorov backward equations stemming from stochastic differential equations in the Stratonovich form. in the setting of weighted spaces, the necessary analyticity of the split semigroups can easily be proved. A numerical example from interest rate theory, the CIR2 model, is considered. The numerical results are robust for drift-d

Hepatocellular and extrahepatic cancer in patients with autoimmune hepatitis - a long-term follow-up study in 634 Swedish patients

Objectives. Cirrhosis is a well-known risk factor for hepatocellular cancer, but the true risk in autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is scarcely studied. Other cancers may arise after prolonged use of immune-modulating drugs. The aim of this study was to investigate the cancer risk in a large cohort of AIH patients. Material and methods. Six hundred and thirty-four Swedish patients in a well-defined cohor

The Verijarv area, South Estonia over the last millennium: A high resolution quantitative land-cover reconstruction based on pollen and historical data

Integration of palynological proxies with annual lamina counting, C-14, Pb-210, Cs-137 and Am-241 radiometric dating, historical documents and old cadastral maps enabled reconstruction of changes in the cultural landscape resulting from extensive forest clearance, arable farming and slash-and-burn practices in South Estonia over the last millennium. Changes in land-cover were quantitatively recons

Non-invasive optical monitoring of free and bound oxygen in humans

Background: Possibilities of detecting oxygen - both in its free form, as gas in the lungs, and in its bound form, as oxygenated hemoglobin - have been explored in this thesis. Perfusion and oxygenation of vital organs (e.g., heart, brain and kidneys) may be severely compromised in critical illness or major trauma, which is why blood is rapidly diverted to those organs to improve chances of surviv

Simulating river flow to the Baltic Sea from climate simulations over the past millennium

The aim of this study was to reconstruct river flow to the Baltic Sea using data from different periods during the past thousand years. A hydrological model coupled to simulations from climate models was used to estimate river flow. A "millennium" simulation of past climate from the ECHO-G coupled atmosphere-ocean global climate model provided climatological inputs. Results from this global model

In Situ Fenestration - A novel option for endovascular aortic arch repair.

Aortic arch repair, is a surgical challenge irrespective of which technique is applied. While open surgical repair is a major trauma and a technically difficult procedure that many elderly patients tolerate poorly, the branched and fenestrated stentgrafts remain complex to implant safely. Hybrid procedures combine some of the advantages of both open and endovascular techniques but also many disadv

Wavelet Analysis of Economic Time Series

Denna avhandling använder wavelet analys för attEconomic theory commonly distinguishes between different time horizons such as the short run and the long run. Models with many time horizons are easily studied in the frequency domain, because the various time horizons are associated with a particular frequency or band of frequencies. This dissertation studies wavelet methods to analyze time series. Wavelet transforms combine time and frequency r

Piscivore-Prey Fish Interactions: Mechanisms behind Diurnal Patterns in Prey Selectivity in Brown and Clear Water.

Environmental change may affect predator-prey interactions in lakes through deterioration of visual conditions affecting foraging success of visually oriented predators. Environmental change in lakes includes an increase in humic matter causing browner water and reduced visibility, affecting the behavioural performance of both piscivores and prey. We studied diurnal patterns of prey selection in p

Harmonic morphisms from homogeneous Hadamard manifolds

We present a new method for manufacturing complex-valued harmonic morphisms from a wide class of Riemannian Lie groups. This yields new solutions from an important family of homogeneous Hadamard manifolds. We also give a new method for constructing left-invariant foliations on a large class of Lie groups producing harmonic morphisms.
