Eclipsing binary statistics - Theory and observation

The expected distributions of eclipse-depth versus period for eclipsing binaries of different luminosities are derived from large-scale population synthesis experiments. Using the rapid Hurley et al. BSE binary evolution code, we have evolved several hundred million binaries, starting from various simple input distributions of masses and orbit-sizes. Eclipse probabilities and predicted distributio

Strength at the extracellular matrix-muscle interface

Mechanical force is generated within skeletal muscle cells by contraction of specialized myofibrillar proteins. This paper explores how the contractile force generated at the sarcomeres within an individual muscle fiber is transferred through the connective tissue to move the bones. The initial key point for transfer of the contractile force is the muscle cell membrane (sarcolemma) where force is

Effect of systemic administration of nicotine on healing in osseous defects. An experimental study in rabbits. Part II

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of systemic administration of nicotine on bone healing in osseous defects in the tibia of rabbits. Materials and methods: Sixteen female rabbits received nicotine (n=8; test group) or saline (n=8; control group) via subcutaneously placed mini-osmotic pumps for 8 weeks. The animals underwent three surgical operations during the expe

A note on estimation of intensities of tire ignitions with incomplete data

Occurrences of fire ignitions in a given region during a specified period of time are modelled as outcomes of a Poisson point process. The ignition frequency is considered a function of the total floor area of the building. Parameter estimates and their uncertainties are computed. Different criteria for model selection are used. The proposed methodology is specifically useful in the case with smal

The aim of this study was to assess the frequency and prognostic value of TP53 gene somatic mutations in non-small cell lung cancer. The study group included 240 NSCLC patients who underwent pulmonary resection at the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Medical University of Gdansk. Tumour samples were evaluated for the presence of TP53 gene mutations in exons 5-8. In 157 cases SSCP method was used as

Det höga självmordsförsökstalet bland narkotikamissbrukare förklaras oftThe aim of this thesis is to describe suicide attempts in a group of drug abusers who previously had received treatment of their addiction. Another aim is to interpret and analyse the life situations that the individual associates with the suicide attempt. The dissertation is based on interviews conducted on two occasions with 92 drug abusers, 62 men and 30 women. The majority of the drug abusers

Enriched environment influences adrenocortical response to immune challenge and glutamate receptor gene expression in rat hippocampus

Housing of animals in an enriched environment (EE) has many positive effects on brain structure and function and can facilitate recovery from various brain injuries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether enriched rearing could alter the stress response induced by repeated immune challenge and to investigate the influence of EE and immune challenge on glutamate receptor gene expression

Psychosocial work conditions, social capital, and daily smoking: a population based study.

Objective: To investigate the associations between psychosocial conditions at work, social capital/social participation, and daily smoking. Design/setting/participants/measurements: The 2000 public health survey in Scania is a cross sectional postal questionnaire study with a 59% participation rate. A total of 5180 persons aged 18–64 years that belonged to the work force and the unemployed were i

Analysis of 5-hydroxy-N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and 2-hydroxy-N-methylsuccinimide in plasma

A method for the determination of 5-hydroxy-N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (5-HNMP) and 2-hydroxy-N-methylsuccinimide (2-HMSI) in plasma was developed. 5-HNMP and 2-HMSI are metabolites to the widely used organic solvent N-methyl-2pyrrolidone (NMP). The 5-HNMP and 2-HMSI were purified from plasma by C8 solid phase extraction, derivatised by bistrimethylsilyl trifluoroacetamid, and analysed by gas chromato

Morphometric and psychometric comparisons between non-substance-abusing patients with posttraumatic stress disorder and normal controls

BACKGROUND: Hippocampal decrease in size in response to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is still a subject of controversy. The aims of this study were to: (1) confirm previous hippocampus findings in PTSD patients compared to controls, using ethnically similar study groups where alcohol and drug abuse were non-existent; (2) test influence of disease duration as well as depression scores on po

Från ägarmakt under ansvar till företagsledarmakt. En studie över maktförskjutningen hos tre svenska verkstadsaktiebolag

The dissertation is confined to the formal work of the boards of the parent companies as recorded in the approved minutes of meetings at Alfa Laval AB, Atlas Copco AB and Kockums Mekaniska Verkstads AB and is based on the Companies Law applying in Sweden since 1848. The study covers the time from the establishment of the joint stock company up to the ordinary general meeting of 1980 (1979 in the c

Low-Dose Prostacyclin Improves Cortical Perfusion following Experimental Brain Injury in the Rat.

It was recently shown that prostacyclin at a low dose reduces cortical cell death following brain trauma in the rat. Conceivably, prostacyclin with its vasodilatory, anti-aggregatory, anti-adhesive and permeability-reducing properties improved a compromised perfusion caused by post-traumatic vasoconstriction, microthrombosis and increased microvascular permeability. The objective of the present st
