Abdominal aortic aneurysms: experience with the Ivancev-Malmo endovascular system for aortomonoiliac stent-grafts

PURPOSE: To describe a component-based aortomonoiliac stent-graft system and the first clinical results achieved with this device in endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. METHODS: From November 1993 to October 1996, 45 patients aged 60 to 86 years underwent endoluminal exclusion of true AAAs (median diameter 60 mm) involving the common iliac arteries (median diameter 16 mm right and

Multiparticle-hole States of High Spin in N

The lifetimes of the 21/2(+) and 17/2(-) yrast states in Nb-89, Mo-89 and Tc-91 and of the 334 keV 5/2(-) state in Nb-87 were determined via the electronic timing method. The nuclei were populated by means of the VICKSI pulsed Ar-36 beam impinging on a Ni-58 target. The lifetimes measured for the first time are: Mo-89: 2271 keV 17/2(-) tau = 1.6(4) ns; 2584 keV 21/2(+) tau = 13.7(3) ns; Nb-87: 334

The benefits and obstacles of implementing ICTs strategies for development from a bottom-up approach

The compatibility between the implementation of information and communication technologies (ICTs) strategies and the bottom-up approach in the developmental process is assessed. In order to put the theoretical arguments into practice, the existing benefits and obstacles of implementing such strategies in reality are presented. Deriving from the analysis of the bottom-up approach is the identificat

Delta++ Resonance Measurements in a High Multiplicity Environment

The very large multiplicity of charged particles encountered in lead on lead collisions in the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS provided new experimental challenges. Tracking detectors read out with high granularity were developed to achieve accurate position information in two dimensions, with the aim of reconstructing tracks with a minimum of combinatorial difficulties. A tracking system based on

Identification and characterization of secretagogin promoter activity

Secretagogin is a newly identified calcium-binding protein selectively expressed in neuroendocrine tissue and pancreatic beta-cells. The function of secretagogin is unknown, but it has been suggested in beta-cells to influence calcium-influx, insulin secretion and proliferation, and has been observed downregulated in diabetes-prone BB rat islets exposed to cytokines. In the present study, we ident

Restricted variable region gene usage and possible rheumatoid factor relationship among human monoclonal antibodies specific for the AD-1 epitope on cytomegalovirus glycoprotein B

The nucleotide sequences of the variable region genes encoding five different human, high affinity antibodies, specific for the major neutralization determinant (AD-1) expressed by human cytomegalovirus glycoprotein B (gp58/116), have been determined. Three of the five heavy chain variable regions belonged to the small VHV-family, although they combined with a diverse set of light chains (V kappa

Conductance of GABAA channels activated by pentobarbitone in hippocampal neurons from newborn rats

Neurons were obtained from the CA1 region of the hippocampus of newborn rats and maintained in culture. Channels were activated by pentobarbitone in cell-attached, inside-out or outside-out patches, normally by applying pentobarbitone in flowing bath solution. Currents were outwardly rectifying and blocked by bicuculline, properties of GABAA channels in these cells. Maximum channel conductance inc

The effects of pneumatic antishock garments in the treatment of critical abdominal injuries in rats

Thirty rats were subjected to a standardized critical aortic injury and divided into six groups. In addition to controls, the animals were treated with a pneumatic antishock garment (PASG), massive intravenous or intra-aortic saline infusion, or PASG in combination with either massive intravenous or intra-aortic saline infusion. Twenty-six rats were subjected to a standardized hepatic injury and d

A Game Theoretic Approach for Load Balancing in Computational Grids

Load balancing is a very important and complex problem in computational grids. A computational grid differs from traditional high-performance computing systems in the heterogeneity of the computing nodes, as well as the communication links that connect the different nodes together. There is a need to develop algorithms that can capture this complexity yet can be easily implemented and used to solv

Factors important for efficacy of stereotactic body radiotherapy of medically inoperable stage I lung cancer. A retrospective analysis of patients treated in the Nordic countries

We reviewed results of SBRT treatment of 138 patients with medically inoperable stage I NSCLC treated during 1996 - 2003 at five different centres in Sweden and Denmark. Mean age was 74 years ( range 56 - 90) with 69 men and 72 women. SBRT was delivered using a 3D conformal multifield technique and a stereotactic body frame. Doses delivered were 30 - 48 Gy (65% isodose at the periphery of planning
