Multilinear forms of Hilbert type and some other distinguished forms

We give some new examples of bounded multilinear forms on the Hilbert spaces l(2) and L-2(0, infinity). We characterize those which are compact or Hilbert-Schmidt. In particular, we study m-linear forms (m >= 3) on l(2) which can be regarded as the multilinear analogue of the famous Hilbert matrix. We also determine the norm of the permanent on K-n, where K = R or C.

Where Does Metonymy Stop? Senses, Facets, and Active Zones

The purpose of this article is to propose a constrained lexical semantic definition of referential metonymy within a model of meaning as ontology and construal. Due to their various types of lexical-referential pairings, 3 types of construals that are frequently referred to as metonymy in the cognitive literature are distinguished as metonymization, facetization, and zone activation. Metonymizatio

Pathology findings and validation of gastric and esophageal cancer cases in a European cohort (EPIC/EUR-GAST)

Objective. Cardia, non-cardia and intestinal and diffuse subtypes of gastric cancer may have different trends and etiological factors. However, the available information is not always collected in population cancer registries, and heterogeneous criteria have been applied for the histopathological classification of tumors. We describe the pathological features of incident gastric and esophageal can

Can we trust our memories? C. I. Lewiss coherence argument

In this paper we examine C. I. Lewis’s view on the role of coherence – what he calls “congruence” – in the justification of beliefs based on memory or testimony. Lewis has two main theses on the subject. His negative thesis states that coherence of independent items of evidence has no impact on the probability of a conclusion unless each item has some credibility of its own. The positive thesis sa

Djupanalys av tre storbränder

This report presents an analysis of three major fires in Sweden. Two of the fires concerns the industry and the third is a fire in a assembly hall. The study is based on available written material. The quality and reliability varies, and appears to depend on the aim, interest and competence of the investigator. In some cases, the information is sufficient to assess the performance of an automatic

Effects of glyceryl trinitrate, nitroprusside and nitric oxide on arterial, venous and capillary functions in cat skeletal muscle in vivo

The aim of the present study was to analyse quantitatively, on a cat gastrocnemius preparation in vivo, the effects of i.a. or i.v. administered glyceryl trinitrate (GTN), sodium nitroprusside (SNP) or nitric oxide (NO dissolved in saline) on vascular resistance (tone) in the following consecutive vascular sections: Large-bore arterial resistance vessels (> 25 microns), small arterioles (< 25 micr

Impact of DNA amplification on gene expression patterns in breast cancer

Genetic changes underlie tumor progression and may lead to cancer-specific expression of critical genes. Over 1100 publications have described the use of comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) to analyze the pattern of copy number alterations in cancer, but very few of the genes affected are known. Here, we performed high-resolution CGH analysis on cDNA microarrays in breast cancer and directly c

Disuse as cause of supersensitivity in the rat urinary bladder

Ureterostomia in situ was performed to reduce the nervous reflex activation of the bladders without concomitant hypertrophy. In muscle strips of these disused and non-hypertrophied bladders, supersensitivity to methacholine was demonstrated, which did not increase between 1 and 3 weeks. The supersensitivity did not increase further by combining urinary diversion with section of the preganglionic b

Costimulation Blockade-Induced Cardiac Allograft Tolerance: Inhibition of T Cell Expansion and Accumulation of Intragraft cD4+Foxp3+ T Cells.

Background. Previous studies have demonstrated that anti-CD40L or anti-B7 requires the presence of CD4(+)CD25(+) regulatory T cells (Treg) to induce antigen specific hyporesponsiveness. Other tolerance strategies involving Treg have shown a dependency on interleukin (IL)-10. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of CD4(+)CD25(+) Treg and IL-10 when treating transplant recipients

Evolutionary dynamics of mitochondrial plasmids in natural populations of Silene vulgaris

Although plasmid-like mitochondrial DNA molecules have been investigated in a number of cultivated plant species, knowledge about their occurrence and behavior in natural plant populations is scarce. In the bladder campion, Silene vulgaris, a common weed of northern Europe, mt-plasmids of three different sizes were detected in a survey of S. vulgaris populations in southern Sweden. Two of the thre

Bradykinin-induced airflow obstruction and airway plasma exudation: effects of drugs that inhibit acetylcholine, thromboxane A2 or leukotrienes

1 The mechanisms behind bradykinin-induced effects in the airways are considered to be largely indirect. The role of cholinergic nerves and eicosanoids, and their relationship in these mechanisms were investigated in guinea-pigs. 2 The role of cholinergic nerves was studied in animals given atropine (1 mg kg-', i.v.), hexamethonium (2 mg kg-', i.v.), or vagotomized. To study the role of eicosanoid
