More about the bird kills on the roads / Mer om fågeldöden på vägarna

In 1998, I estimated the number of birds killed on Swedish roads at about ten million. This estimate was ten times higher than a previous estimate from 1978. 1 suspected that the difference depended on different methods, and that my estimate was the most correct one. At that time I was not aware of a careful Danish study, which estimated the total road kill of birds at 3.3-3.5 million in that coun

Modelling of the ETH Helicopter Laboratory Process

This report presents the derivation of a nonlinear model for the ETH helicopter laboratory process. The model is derived using Euler-Lagrange equations together with relations from propeller theory. The model is formulated as a state-space model, which enables straightforward implementation in standard simulation tools such as Simulink (TM). A set of model parameters computed from the ETH process

A simplified laminin nomenclature

A simplification of the laminin nomenclature is presented. Laminins are multidomain heterotrimers composed of alpha, beta and gamma chains. Previously, laminin trimers were numbered with Arabic numerals in the order discovered, that is laminins-1 to -5. We introduce a new identification system for a trimer using three Arabic numerals, based on the alpha, beta and gamma chain numbers. For example,

Seven-year Study of the Effect of Silica Fume in Concrete.

In this article an experimental and numerical study of the long-term interaction between silica fume and Portland cement in concrete subjected to air, water or sealed curing is outlined. For this purpose about 250 kg of eight qualities of each concrete were studied at 4 different ages each over a period of 7 years. Parallel studies of strength, hydration and internal relative humidity were perform

Cytogenetic abnormalities in 106 oral squamous cell carcinomas

We report karyotypic features of 106 short-term cultured oral squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), 51 new and 55 previously reported cases, with clonal chromosome aberrations. The major cytogenetic findings were as follows: simple karyotypic changes were present in 38 cases (36%) and 68 tumors (64%) displayed complex karyotypes. The most common numerical changes were +7, +8, +9, +16, +18, +20, and -4,

A 10-bit wide-band CMOS direct digital RF amplitude modulator

This paper describes a low-distortion wide-band CMOS direct digital RF amplitude modulator, which uses a 10-bit linear interpolation current-steering digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and a Gilbert-cell-based mixer to generate an amplitude modulated RF signal directly. The linear interpolation increases the attenuation of the DAC's image components. The reconstruction filter is, therefore, elimina

Requirements Prioritisation and Retrospective Analysis for Release Planning Process Improvement

The quality of a product can be defined by its ability to satisfy the needs and expectations of its customers. Achieving quality is especially difficult in market-driven situations since the product is released on an open market with numerous potential customers and users with various wishes. The quality of the software product is to a large extent determined by the quality of the requirements eng

Master's Theses in Automatic Control 1982-1983

The report contains abstracts of Master Theses (examensarbeten made at the Department of Automatic Control, Lund, during the academic year 82/83. During this year 23 theses were made by 25 students. Most of the theses are written in Swedish with an English abstract.

Measurement of the b(b)over-bar production cross section in 920 GeV fixed-target proton-nucleus collisions

Using the HERA-B detector, the b (b) over bar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b (b) over bar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi --> l(+)l(-) decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels ha

A parametrisable system for physically plausible surface inspection

Visual quality assurance techniques focus on the detection and qualification of abnormal structures in the image of an object. The features of abnormality are extracted through image mining, whereupon classification is performed on characteristic combinations. Many techniques for feature extraction have been proposed, but the feed-forward neural network is seldom utilized despite its popularity in

Androgens and glucuronidated androgen metabolites are associated with metabolic risk factors in men

Context: Androgens are associated with metabolic risk factors in men. However, the independent impact of androgens and androgen metabolites on metabolic risk factors in men is unclear. Objective: Our objective was to determine the predictive value of serum levels of androgens and glucuronidated androgen metabolites for metabolic risk factors. Design and Study Subjects: We conducted a population-ba

Fungal and bacterial growth in soil with plantmaterials of different C/N ratios

Fungal (acetate-in-ergosterol incorporation) and bacterial (leucine/thymidine incorporation) growth resulting from alfalfa (C/N = 15) and barley straw (C/N = 75) addition was studied in soil microcosms for 64 days. Nitrogen amendments were used to compensate for the C/N difference between the substrates. Fungal growth increased to a maximum after 3–7 days, at five to eight times the controls, foll

Breast and ovarian cancer risks to carriers of the BRCA1 5382insC and 185delAG and BRCA2 6174delT mutations: a combined analysis of 22 population based studies

A recent report estimated the breast cancer risks in carriers of the three Ashkenazi founder mutations to be higher than previously published estimates derived from population based studies. In an attempt to confirm this, the breast and ovarian cancer risks associated with the three Ashkenazi founder mutations were estimated using families included in a previous meta-analysis of populatrion based

The Substituted Judgment Standard. Studies on the Ethics of Surrogate Decision Making

Enligt ?the Substituted Judgment Standard? (SJS) bör en ställföreträdare fatta det beslut som patienten själv hade fattat, om denne hPatients who are incompetent need a surrogate decision maker to make treatment decisons on their behalf. One of the main ethical questions that arise in this context is what standard ought to govern such decision making. According to the Substituted Judgment Standard (SJS), a surrogate ought to make the decision that the patient would have made, had he or she been competent. Although this standard
