Maximum likelihood multipath estimation in comparison with conventional delay lock loops

The implementation of the maximum likelihood estimator for the time-delay estimation problem is practically intractable for navigation signals due to its complexity, especially when due to multipath reception several superimposed replica are taken into account. Recently it has been shown that signal compression techniques can overcome this problem, as the maximum likelihood estimator can be formul

Shift-map Image Registration

Shift-map image processing is a new framework based on energy minimization over a large space of labels. The optimization utilizes -expansion moves and iterative refinement over a Gaussian pyramid. In this paper we extend the range of applications to image registration. To do this, new data and smoothness terms have to be constructed. We note a great improvement when we measure pixel similarities

Essays in Strategy-proof Social Choice Theory

This thesis consists of two separate papers in strategy-proof social choice theory. The first paper, “Generalizing the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem: Partial preferences, the degree of manipulation, and multi-valuedness”, generalizes the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem in three ways: firstly, it is proved that the theorem is still valid when individual preferences belong to a convenient class of par

Visual filtering in box jellyfish: A simple system

Unlike most jellyfish, box jellyfish (cubomedusae) are highly visually orientated. They are agile swimmers and use visual information to avoid obstacles and orientate themselves. They have an elaborate visual system which consists of four sensory structures called rhopalia, each holding six eyes of four morphological types: 2 camera-type eyes (upper and lower lens-eyes) and 2 lesser pigment cup ey

The Loshult arrows: cultural relations and chronology

In 1951 two arrows were found close to each other in the bog Lilla Loshults Mosse in northernmost Scania, southern Sweden. These arrows are of major importance for the study of the early Mesolithic as the arrowheads, including points and barbs made of flint, were still attached to the shafts. The arrows have been dated to the Early Boreal chronozone by pollen analyses of the attached peat. The ar
