Color-Tuning Mechanism of Firefly Investigated by Multi-Configurational Perturbation Method.

This is the first report on a multiconfigurational reference second-order perturbation theory-molecular mechanics study of the color modulation of the observed bioluminescence of the oxyluciferin-luciferase complex of the Japanese genji-botaru firefly using structures according to recent X-ray data. Our theoretical results do not support the experimentally deduced conclusion that the color modulat

Proton NMR of (15)N-Choline Metabolites Enhanced by Dynamic Nuclear Polarization.

Chemical shifts of protons can report on metabolic transformations such as the conversion of choline to phosphocholine. To follow such processes in vivo, magnetization can be enhanced by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP). We have hyperpolarized in this manner nitrogen-15 spins in (15)N-labeled choline up to 3.3% by irradiating the 94 GHz electron spin resonance of admixed TEMPO nitroxide radicals

First storage of ion beams in the Double Electrostatic Ion-Ring Experiment: DESIREE

We report on the first storage of ion beams in the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment, DESIREE, at Stockholm University. We have produced beams of atomic carbon anions and small carbon anion molecules (C-n(-), n = 1, 2, 3, 4) in a sputter ion source. The ion beams were accelerated to 10 keV kinetic energy and stored in an electrostatic ion storage ring enclosed in a vacuum chamber at 13 K. F

Control of GaP and GaAs Nanowire Morphology through Particle and Substrate Chemical Modification.

We demonstrate two very different morphologies for GaP and GaAs nanowires grown by Au-assisted MOVPE on Si(111) substrates: rodlike wires and tapered wires with sharp tips. We show that the morphology is related to the stability of the particles at the wire tips during growth, and we propose that the mechanism of this effect is diffusion of Au away from the tip. Diffusion occurs, leading to tapere

Subjective health complaints in adolescent victims of cyber harassment: moderation through support from parents/friends - a Swedish population-based study.

Victimization in cyberspace has emerged as a new public health issue among the young. The main purpose of this study was to analyze associations between cyber victimization defined as cyber harassment (CH) (a somewhat broader concept than cyberbullying) and subjective health complaints (SHC), to study whether these associations were modified by parental/friend support (measured as communication),

A Randomized, Doubleblind, Placebo-Controlled, Study of Single-Dose Rituximab as Induction in Renal Transplantation

We performed a prospective, double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled multicenter study on the efficacy and safety of rituximab as induction therapy, together with tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and steroids. The primary endpoint was defined as acute rejection, graft loss, or death during the first 6 months. Secondary endpoints were creatinine clearance, incidence of infections, and inciden

The Origin, Development and Molecular Diversity of Rodent Olfactory Bulb Glutamatergic Neurons Distinguished by Expression of Transcription Factor NeuroD1.

Production of olfactory bulb neurons occurs continuously in the rodent brain. Little is known, however, about cellular diversity in the glutamatergic neuron subpopulation. In the central nervous system, the basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor NeuroD1 (ND1) is commonly associated with glutamatergic neuron development. In this study, we utilized ND1 to identify the different subpopulations o

CaMKII and MEK1/2 inhibition time-dependently modify inflammatory signaling in rat cerebral arteries during organ culture.

Cerebral ischemia induces transcriptional upregulation of inflammatory genes in the brain parenchyma and in cerebral arteries, thereby contributing to the infarct development. The present study was designed to evaluate the involvement of calcium-calmodulin-dependent protein kinase (CaMKII) II and extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2) on inflammatory mediators in rat cerebral arteries u

Service Level Agreements in Municipal IT Dependability Management

Abstract—Service Level Agreements (SLA) are considered a good practice not only for IT outsourcing but also for IT management within an organisation. In this paper we study the usage of SLAs in municipal IT management. Municipal IT management traditionally involves a large organisation, often with a low IT maturity, but with high requirements on software quality and information security. In this s

Pollen based quantitative climate reconstructions from the Middle Pleistocene sequences in Lukow and Zdany (E Poland): Species and modern analogues based approach

The aim of the study was to estimate the range of climate variability during the Ferdynandovian climatostratigraphic unit (MIS 13-15). The studied pollen sequences encompass two interglacials (Ferdynandovian I and II - FI and F II), the glaciation separating them (FI/II), the late glacial of the Sanian I (= Elsterian 1) and the early glacial of the Sanian II (=Elsterian 2) and are correlated with

Palynostratigraphy of the cretaceous-paleogene mass-extinction interval of the Northern Hemisphere

For a long time debate has taken place regarding the trends and extinction rates associated with the Cretaceous- Paleogene (K-Pg) mass extinction event on land. While mainly focussed on vertebrates and more especially non-avian dinosaurs, the dynamics of the plant cover remains nonetheless a major component for the understanding the biological response across the K-Pg interval and associated ecosy

Malaria-Infected Female Collared Flycatchers (Ficedula albicollis) Do Not Pay the Cost of Late Breeding.

Life-history theory predicts that the trade-off between parasite defense and other costly traits such as reproduction may be most evident when resources are scarce. The strength of selection that parasites inflict on their host may therefore vary across environmental conditions. Collared flycatchers (Ficedula albicollis) breeding on the Swedish island Öland experience a seasonal decline in their p
