On the global existence of solutions to quasilinear parabolic equations

We prove, under quite general assumptions, the global existence of classical solutions for quasilinear parabolic equations in bounded domains with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The same results for weakly coupled reaction-diffusion systems are also given. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification.

Wound edge microvascular blood flow: effects of negative pressure wound therapy using gauze or polyurethane foam.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) on wound edge microvascular blood flow, comparing different wound fillers. Wounds were created on the backs of 7 pigs. NPWT was applied, using either foam or gauze, at -50,-75, -100, -125, -150, or -175 mm Hg. Microvascular blood flow was measured in muscle tissue, subcutaneous tissue, and in the wound bed,

Strategies Applied by Women in Coping With ad-hoc Demands for Unauthorized User Fees During Pregnancy and Childbirth. A Focus Group Study From Angola.

Our aim in this study was to explore women's responses to reported ad-hoc demands for unauthorized user fees during pregnancy and childbirth in Luanda, Angola. Ten focus group discussions were conducted and data were analysed using grounded theory. Women were found to apply six strategies as they "endeavored to cope with demands for unauthorized user fees" (core category): (i) blowing the whistle,

Calculation of EPR g tensors for transition-metal complexes based on multiconfigurational perturbation theory (CASPT2)

The computation of the electronic g tensor by two multireference methods is presented and applied to a selection of molecules including CN, BO, AIO, GaO, InO, ZnH, ZnF, O-2, H2O+, O-3(-), and H2CO+ (group A) as well as TiF3, CuCl42-, Cu(NH3)(4)(2+) and a series of d(1)-MOX4n- compounds, with M = V Cr, Mo, Tc, W, Re and X = F Cl, Br (group B). Two approaches are considered, namely, one in which spi

Reglermöte -85

The workshop Reglermöte 85 was arranged during May 29-30 1985 at the Department of Automatic Control at Lund Institute of Technology. About 100 persons participated evenly divided between industry and universities. 18 papers were presented. Abstracts of the papers are given in the report.

Essays on Econometric Theory

This dissertation contains a variety of contributions to econometric theory. Broadly speaking, econometrics may be categorized depending on what type of data is being analyzed, the two main categories being time series data and cross sectional data. A third category is panel data, combining cross sectional data observed over time. This is the area at which this dissertation is aimed. Panel data mo

The salivary mucin MG1 (MUC5B) carries a repertoire of unique oligosaccharides that is large and diverse

The high-molecular-mass salivary mucin MG1, one of two major mucins produced by human salivary glands, plays an important role in oral health by coating the tooth surface and by acting as a bacterial receptor. Here this mucin was purified from the submandibular/sublingual saliva of a blood group O individual. The presence of MUC5B as the major mucin in this preparation was confirmed by amino acid

Effects of harvest time and storage on dietary fibre components in various cultivars of white cabbage (Brassica oleracea var capitata)

The effect of harvest time and storage on dietary fibre content and composition was investigated in six cultivars of white cabbage (Brassica oleracea var capitata). Three cultivars were of early maturity type (SW Nordpol, Rolly and Balbro) and three of late maturity type (Predikant, Hanna and Lion). The average total dietary fibre (TDF) content was 241 g kg(-1) dry matter (DM) (CV = 13), of which

Antigen and epitope specificity of anti-glomerular basement membrane antibodies in patients with Goodpasture disease with or without anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies

Goodpasture disease (GP) is defined by the presence of anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) antibodies and rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis. Besides anti-GBM, many patients with GP produce anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA). For elucidation of the pathophysiologic significance of ANCA in this setting, epitope and antigen specificity of the anti-GBM antibodies and antigen s

Microbial biosensor for the analysis of 2,4-dichlorophenol

A flow injection cell-based biosensor was constructed for 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) analysis by using a Clark-type oxygen electrode as a transducer. A mixed bacterial culture capable to biodegrade DCP was immobilized between a Teflon membrane and a dialysis membrane and attached to the oxygen electrode. Optimization of the flow rate, the injection volume, the carrier buffer concentration, and pH wa

Nerve cell damage in mammalian brain after exposure to microwaves from GSM mobile phones.

The possible risks of radio-frequency electromagnetic fields for the human body is a growing concern for our society. We have previously shown that weak pulsed microwaves give rise to a significant leakage of albumin through the blood-brain barrier. In this study we investigated whether a pathologic leakage across the blood-brain barrier might be combined with damage to the neurons. Three groups e

b-tagging in DELPHI at LEP

The standard method used for tagging b-hadrons in the DELPHI experiment at the CERN LEP Collider is discussed in detail. The main ingredient of b-tagging is the impact parameters of tracks, which relies mostly on the vertex detector. Additional information, such as the mass of particles associated to a secondary vertex, significantly improves the selection efficiency and the background suppression

Aberrant IgG2 antibody response to Neisseria Meningitidis polysaccharide A after vaccination in frequently infected compared to healthy IgA-deficient individuals

In search for a possible explanation of the phenotypic heterogeneity in selective immunoglobulin (Ig)A deficiency, we studied the IgG2 antibody response to meningococcal polysaccharide A (PSA) in IgA-deficient (IgAd) individuals after vaccination with meningococcal A + C polysaccharide vaccine. Two groups of IgAd individuals, one frequently infected and one clinically apparently healthy, as well a

Response criteria for rheumatoid arthritis in clinical practice - how useful are they?

Objective: To compare the performance of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR), and simple disease activity index (SDAI) response criteria for rheumatoid arthritis at the individual level in an observational cohort. Methods: 184 outpatients were followed using a structured protocol. For each patient, the responses according to ACR 20% and 50%, EULAR

Parental participation in the care of hospitalized children

The purpose of this study was to investigate those parts of the care of hospitalized children that their parents perform, the nursing tasks the parents themselves felt they could manage and whether parents' and staff members' opinions coincided. A questionnaire was given to parents of children between one week and five years of age who were hospitalized at a pediatric surgical department during a
