This thesis addresses the corporate sustainability process and different tools to assist the process of generating corporate strategies towards sustainability in the energy sector. The focus of the research was in backcasting approaches. The main outcome of the work is a framework for corporate sustainability for the energy sector. The framework is constructed around a three step strategic plannin
Sarcomas with chromosomal translocations represent only about one fourth of sarcoma diagnoses. However, like gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), with its characteristic KIT or PDGFRA mutations, they are particularly interesting since they provide specific biological insights and mechanisms of action that may have an impact upon prognosis or therapy. These are mechanisms we are just beginning to
Genetic susceptibility to insulin resistance is associated with lower adiposity in adults. Insulin resistance, and therefore adiposity, may alter sensitivity to Growth Hormone (GH). We aimed to determine the relationship between adiposity, genetic susceptibility to insulin resistance or insulin secretion, and response to GH treatment in short children born small for gestational age (SGA).
We report a strong prepulse dependence of the emission of X-rays from plasmas created by 150 fs Ti:sapphire laser pulses on solids. The laser pulses were focused onto plane samples of aluminium and vanadium with a main pulse power density of about 2.5 x 10(16) W cm(-2). By splitting off a portion of the main pulse we were able to generate a prepulse whose delay and intensity were variable relative
Abstract Pseudomonas aeruginosa is often found in chronic infections, including cystic fibrosis lung infections and those related to chronic wounds and venous ulcers. At the latter sites, P. aeruginosa can be isolated together with Staphylococcus epidermidis, and we have therefore explored the effect of clinical isolates and laboratory strains of P. aeruginosa strains on colonization by S. epiderm
Radiative lifetimes were determined for two short-lived states in neutral nitrogen. Following photodissociation and two-photon excitation employing the same UV source, excitation to higher states was performed with a distributed feedback dye laser (DFDL). The lifetimes were found to be tau(2p2 4d4D7/2) = 17(3) ns and tau(2p2 5s4P5/2) = 22(3) ns.
A compact fluorosensor with a fiber-optic measurement probe was developed, employing a continuous-wave violet diode laser as an exciting source and an integrated digital spectrometer for the monitoring of fluorescence signatures. The system has the dimensions 22x13x8 cm(3), and features 5 nm spectral resolution and an excellent detectivity. Results from measurements on vegetation and human premali
BACKGROUND: To date, the only estimate of the heritability of telomere length in wild populations comes from humans. Thus, there is a need for analysis of natural populations with respect to how telomeres evolve. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here, we show that telomere length is heritable in free-ranging sand lizards, Lacerta agilis. More importantly, heritability estimates analysed within, a
