Vibration thresholds in carpal tunnel syndrome assessed by multiple frequency vibrometry : a case-control study
Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common compression neuropathy, but there is no gold standard for establishing the diagnosis. The ability to feel vibrations in the fingertips is dependent on the function in cutaneous receptors and afferent nerves. Our aim was to investigate vibration perception thresholds (VPTs) in patients with CTS using multi-frequency vibrometry. Methods: Six

Preserving Insulin Secretion in Diabetes by Inhibiting VDAC1 Overexpression and Surface Translocation in β Cells
The calcium channel subunit gamma-4 is regulated by MafA and necessary for pancreatic beta-cell specification
Voltage-gated Ca2+ (CaV) channels trigger glucose-induced insulin secretion in pancreatic beta-cell and their dysfunction increases diabetes risk. These heteromeric complexes include the main subunit alpha1, and the accessory ones, including subunit gamma that remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that CaV gamma subunit 4 (CaVγ4) is downregulated in islets from human donors with diabetes, diabe

Removal of metals from contaminated waters : Evaluating the use of synthetic adsorbents and green algae biomass
Metal contamination of water bodies has attracted global attention owing to its environmental toxicity, abundance and persistence. Metals such as arsenic, cadmium and mercury are of greater concern since they are toxic even at low concentrations. Mercury is present at 1000 times lower concentrations than the other two metals, but still has a negative impact on the environment due to its high trans
Adsorption of cadmium by a high-capacity adsorbent composed of silicate-titanate nanotubes embedded in hydrogel chitosan beads
In this study, we developed a nanoparticle-based mesoporous composite that consisted of silicate-titanate nanotubes (STNTs) supported in hydrogel chitosan beads (STNTs-Ch beads) and was studied for Cd2+ adsorption. By using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy coupled to an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer, we coulddetermine that the hollow STN

Depressivity and mortality risk in a cohort of elderly men. A role of cognitive and vascular ill-health, and social participation
Objectives: Depressive symptoms in the elderly have been shown to be associated with increased mortality. The purpose of this study was to examine symptoms of depression in octogenarian men and their association with all-cause mortality, and whether physical, cognitive and social factors influence this association. Methods: Out of the 703 initially included 55-years-old men, from the prospective c
Structure-function relationship for CO 2 methanation over ceria supported Rh and Ni catalysts under atmospheric pressure conditions
In situ structural and chemical state characterization of Rh/CeO 2 and Ni/CeO 2 catalysts during atmospheric pressure CO 2 methanation has been performed by a combined array of time-resolved analytical techniques including ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-energy X-ray diffraction and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The ceria phase is partiall
Resistant bacteria’s an the Anthropocene perspective
The medical landscape is a constantly changing field, both in relation to new knowledge and innovative technology as well as a changing world. Some examples are new emerging diseases and changing welfare societies. In ethnological and folkloric research there is a long tradition of exploring and reflecting upon this kind of issues from a broad variety of methodological and theoretical perspectivesIn this paper I ask how ethnology with a medical humanities perspective can use the term Anthropocene to better understand the emerging fact that we soon will stand without functional antibiotics.
