Public entities responsible for court administration and supervision over judges

Public entities can be responsible for court administration and supervision over judges. This article provides an overview of this issue, using Sweden as the main example. The article contains a general discussion on what is understood by ’supervision’ and ‘public entities’, how such a topic can be analysed, and how supervision can preferably be arranged so as to safeguard a high level of judicial

Multi-scattering software part II : Experimental validation for the light intensity distribution

This article, Part II of an article series on GPU-accelerated Monte Carlo simulation of photon transport through turbid media, focuses on the validation of the online software Multi-Scattering. While Part I detailed the implementation of the computational model, simulated and experimental results are now compared for the distribution of the scattered light intensity. The scattering phantoms prepar

Human impacts and their interactions in the Baltic Sea region

Coastal environments, in particular heavily populated semi-enclosed marginal seas and coasts like the Baltic Sea region, are strongly affected by human activities. A multitude of human impacts, including climate change, affect the different compartments of the environment, and these effects interact with each other. As part of the Baltic Earth Assessment Reports (BEAR), we present an inventory and

Azimuthal correlations of high transverse momentum jets at next-to-leading order in the parton branching method

The azimuthal correlation, Δ ϕ12, of high transverse momentum jets in pp collisions at s=13 TeV is studied by applying PB-TMD distributions to NLO calculations via MCatNLO together with the PB-TMD parton shower. A very good description of the cross section as a function of Δ ϕ12 is observed. In the back-to-back region of Δ ϕ12→ π, a very good agreement is observed with the PB-TMD Set 2 distributio

Incident cardiovascular disease and long-term exposure to source-specific air pollutants in a Swedish cohort

Air pollution is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, but its role in the development of congestive heart failure (CHF) and the role of different pollution sources in cardiovascular disease remain uncertain.MethodsParticipants were enrolled in the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort in 1991–1996 with information on lifestyle and clinical indicators of cardiovascular disease. Accelerating research on biological aging and mental health : Current challenges and future directions

Aging is associated with complex biological changes that can be accelerated, slowed, or even temporarily reversed by biological and non-biological factors. This article focuses on the link between biological aging, psychological stressors, and mental illness. Rather than comprehensively reviewing this rapidly expanding field, we highlight challenges in this area of research and propose potential s

K369I Tau Mice Demonstrate a Shift Towards Striatal Neuron Burst Firing and Goal-directed Behaviour

Pathological forms of the microtubule-associated protein tau are involved in a large group of neurodegenerative diseases named tauopathies, including frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD-tau). K369I mutant tau transgenic mice (K3 mice) recapitulate neural and behavioural symptoms of FTLD, including tau aggregates in the cortex, alterations to nigrostriatum, memory deficits and parkinsonism. The

Technical Note: Noise models for virtual clinical trials of digital breast tomosynthesis

Purpose: To investigate the use of an affine-variance noise model, with correlated quantum noise and spatially dependent quantum gain, for the simulation of noise in virtual clinical trials (VCT) of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT).Methods: Two distinct technologies were considered: an amorphous-selenium (a-Se) detector with direct conversion and a thallium-doped cesium iodide (CsI(Tl)) detector

X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy with coherent nanobeams : A numerical study

X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy accesses a wide variety of dynamic phenomena at the nanoscale by studying the temporal correlations among photons that are scattered by a material in dynamical equilibrium when it is illuminated with a coherent X-ray beam. The information that is obtained is averaged over the illuminated area, which is generally of the order of several square microns. We propo

Human experimental exposure to glyphosate and biomonitoring of young Swedish adults

Glyphosate (GLY), N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine, is the most widely used herbicide in the world. It is a broad-spectrum herbicide, also used in crop desiccation. Agricultural workers may be occupationally exposed and general populations may be exposed to GLY mainly through diet. We studied the kinetics of GLY by measuring the parent compound and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in ur

A study of tactical and sexual dimorphism in cognition with insights for sexual conflict

The sexes may have different optima in cognitive traits due to differences in life history strategies and the expense of investing in metabolically costly brain tissue. However, given genetic correlations, each sex could be constrained from reaching its cognitive optimum due to intralocus sexual conflict. We compared learning performance of two male alternative reproductive tactics and females fro

Probing strain in wurtzite InP-InAs core-shell nanowires with Raman spectroscopy

We used Raman spectroscopy to investigate phonon modes of single InP-InAs core-shell nanowire with a pure wurtzite phase to reveal the embedded strained state. Raman spectra show that the InP core exhibits tensile strain and the InAs shell exhibits compressive strain due to the radial heterostructure growth. Using different polarization excitation configurations, we identified distinct A1 (TO) and

Prevalence and severity of differing dimensions of breathlessness among elderly males in the population

Breathlessness is common in the general population. Existing data were obtained primarily with the uni-dimensional modified Medical Research Council breathlessness scale (mMRC) that does not assess intensities of unpleasantness nor physical, emotional and affective dimensions. The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence and intensity of these dimensions of breathlessness in elderly ma

Short-distance HLbL contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment beyond perturbation theory

The hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment depends on an integration over three off-shell momenta squared (Qi2) of the correlator of four electromagnetic currents and the fourth leg at zero momentum. We derive the short-distance expansion of this correlator in the limit where all three Qi2 are large and in the Euclidean domain in QCD. This is done via a systemat

The Gaia-ESO Survey : Membership probabilities for stars in 32 open clusters from 3D kinematics

The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) observed many open clusters as part of its programme to spectroscopically characterize the various Milky Way populations. GES spectroscopy and Gaia astrometry from its second data release are used here to assign membership probabilities to targets towards 32 open clusters with ages from 1 to 3800 Myr, based on maximum likelihood modelling of the 3D kinematics of the clust
