Catechol-o-methyltransferase, polypeptide sequences and dna molecule coding therefor

A novel isolation procedure was developed that allowed the purification of rat liver and human placenta catechol-O-methyltransferase (EC 2.1.1.6, COMT) enzyme from rat and human sources to a degree sufficient to allow the amino acid sequencing of the enzyme. Recombinant clones directed against the rat liver and human placenta COMT are identified and sequenced. The isolation of pure and recombinant

One algorithm to rule them all? : An evaluation and discussion of ten eye movement event-detection algorithms

Almost all eye-movement researchers use algorithms to parse raw data and detect distinct types of eye movement events, such as fixations, saccades, and pursuit, and then base their results on these. Surprisingly, these algorithms are rarely evaluated. We evaluated the classifications of ten eye-movement event detection algorithms, on data from an SMI HiSpeed 1250 system, and compared them to manua

Conflicting Approaches to User Information Seeking Education in Scandinavian Web-Based Tutorials

The purpose of this paper is to make visible different approaches to university librarians' professional expertise such as they are mediated through user information seeking education. The empirical basis of the study consists of an analysis of 31 web-based tutorials in information literacy accessible via Scandinavian university libraries' web-sites. The results make apparent four, sometimes confl

Experimental investigation of the stability limits of premixed syngas-air flames at two moderate swirl numbers

This article presents an investigation of the swirl number effects on the stability limits of various syngas compositions in an atmospheric premixed variable-swirl burner. Lean blowout (LBO) and flashback (FB) experiments were performed using fuel mixtures containing varying amounts of H2, CO and CH4 at two swirl numbers. Reducing the swirl number from 0.66 to 0.53, reduced the flashback propensit

Role of Parental Expectations in Determining Child Labour and Schooling

The paper shows how parental expectations about child’s future income affect the incidence of child labour and schooling. We present a theoretical framework where parents decide on the optimal amount of time invested in child education in presence of uncertainty about returns to education. Here, the uncertainty is captured using the probability that parents attach to higher returns after education

Long-Run Saving Dynamics: Evidence from Unexpected Inheritances

Long-run saving dynamics are a crucial component of consumption-saving behavior. This paper makes two contributions to the consumption literature. First, we exploit inheritance episodes to provide novel causal evidence on the long-run effects of a large financial windfall on saving behavior. For identification, we combine a longitudinal panel of administrative wealth reports with variation in the

Epstein-Barr virus-induced transformation of human B lymphocytes : the effect of l-leucyl-l-leucine methyl ester on inhibitory T cell populations

Epstein-Barr virus-mediated transformation of human B lymphocytes is inhibited by human T lymphocytes as well as by interferon-γ. Removal of the inhibitory cell populations is essential in order to achieve successful transformation in vitro. Cells with the capacity to inhibit outgrowth of lymphoblastoid cell lines can be removed by pretreatment of peripheral blood mononuclear cells with l-leucyl-l

Human MoAbs produced from normal, HIV-1-negative donors and specific for glycoprotein gp120 of the HIV-1 envelope

Human MoAbs ofIgM class were developed against three regions of the HIV-1 envelope. Uninfected donor lymphocytes were immunized in vitro with recombinant protein pB1. Four out of five antibodies were directed to different parts of the V3 region, which contains a major neutralizing site. Two out of these antibodies were directed to more than one amino acid sequence, indicating reactivity to discont

Human monoclonal antibodies against an epitope on the class 5c outer membrane protein common to many pathogenic strains of Neisseria meningitidis

Neisseria meningitidis is a causative agent of meningitis. Despite vaccination programs, it still causes a large number of deaths in young children. Early diagnosis followed by passive immunization with human monoclonal antibodies could be an approach to effective therapy. Peripheral blood lymphocytes from normal, healthy blood donors and from vaccinated individuals were immunized in vitro, using

Kinetic analysis of recombinant antibody-antigen interactions : Relation between structural domains and antigen binding

The relation between domain structures of recombinant monoclonal antibody fragments and their reaction kinetics was studied for the first time using a novel biosensor based on surface plasmon resonance technology. The association and dissociation rate constants of Fab, Fv and single domain (VH fragment) anti-lysozyme antibodies were determined and compared to the intact monoclonal antibody. Fab an

Production of human monoclonal antibodies in dialysis tubing

Human x mouse hybridoma cells were grown in dialysis tubing (DT) to obtain large quantities of human monoclonal antibodies (MAb). Hybridoma cells were grown inside the DT, which was placed in a tissue culture flask containing medium. The medium inside the DT was supplemented with different additives which may be selected depending on the intended use of the MAb. About 10-50 times higher concentrat

Pharmacokinetics of carbetocin, a long-acting oxytocin analogue, in nonpregnant women

The safety and pharmacokinetics of carbetocin, a long-acting oxytocin analogue, were studied in 25 healthy nonpregnant women. The distribution and elimination half-lives of a 0.4-mg intravenous dose were found to be 5.5 ± 1.6 minutes and 41 ± 11.9 minutes, respectively. Similarly, the half-lives of a 0.8-mg intravenous dose were found to be 6.1 ± 1.2 minutes and 42.7 ± 10.6 minutes. Approximately

Qualitative research methods : Interviewing as a way of learning and knowing

This paper is based on the keynote talk that I gave on the EAHIL+ICAHIS+ICLC 2015 Workshop in Edinburgh. A starting point for the talk was the theme for the Workshop: “Research-minded: supporting, understanding, conducting research”. Some features of qualitative research are presented and a number of methods are mentioned before zooming in on interviewing, discussing some aspects of that method wiThis paper is based on the keynote talk that I gave on the EAHIL+ICAHIS+ICLC 2015 Workshop in Edinburgh. Experimental Study of Outlet Guide Vane Heat Transfer and Gas Turbine Internal Cooling

Heat transfer in gas turbine related applications is investigated by steady state liquid crystal thermography (LCT) in this thesis. The work presented includes outlet guide vane heat transfer and gas turbine internal cooling. The heat transfer on the outlet guide vane (OGV) surface and its endwall region is investigated experimentally in a linear cascade test facility. The inlet flow angle is varie
