St. Birgitta, an Architect of Spiritual Reform

The shape and features of a typical abbey church of the Birgittine Order are studied, based on the stipulations laid down by St. Birgitta of Sweden herself. The architecture is interpreted as paradigmatic of the kind of spiritual reform that St. Birgitta aimed at.

Views on patient safety by operations managers in somatic hospital care: a qualitative analysis

Healthcare outcome is to achieve optimal health for each patient. It is a well-known phenomenon that patients suffer from care injuries. Operations managers have difficulties in seeing that the relationship between safety culture, values and attitudes affects the medical care to the detriment of the patient. The aim was to describe the views on patient safety by operations managers and the establi

Making both ends meet

The purpose of this article is to launch a new conceptual design tool in rehabilitation engineering, technology, and Disability Studies, useful both as guidance and help for people with disabilities inanalyzing their own functional aids, and as inspiration and meta-guidelines for designers. It is nondiscriminatingand classification-free and differs from a mere classification system like theInternat

Further search for supersymmetry at root s=7 TeV in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum, and isolated leptons with the ATLAS detector

This work presents a new inclusive search for supersymmetry (SUSY) by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy root s = 7 TeV in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum and one or more isolated electrons and/or muons. The search is based on data from the full 2011 data-taking period, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb(-1).

Childhood obesity: from nutrition to behaviour.

Obesity in children is difficult to treat, but it seems to be easier to treat than adult obesity. The first step in treatment is to identify effective advice relating to nutrition and physical activity. In most treatment studies the macronutrient composition of the diet is not of major importance for treatment outcome. In relation to physical activity fat-utilisation strategies have been described

Long-term treatment with antidepressants, but not environmental stimulation, induces expression of NP2 mRNA in hippocampus and medial habenula.

In experimental settings, antidepressant treatment as well as a stimulating environment has a positive influence on cognition and hippocampal plasticity. One putative mediator of this process is Neuronal Pentraxin 2 (NP2, Narp), known to mediate clustering of glutamatergic AMPA receptors at synapses, and demonstrated to play a role in activity-dependent synaptogenesis and synaptic plasticity. This

Noninvasive functional optical spectroscopy of human breast tissue

Near infrared diffuse optical spectroscopy and diffuse optical imaging are promising methods that eventually may enhance or replace existing technologies for breast cancer screening and diagnosis. These techniques are based on highly sensitive, quantitative measurements of optical and functional contrast between healthy and diseased tissue. In this study, we examine whether changes in breast physi

DNA of Helicobacter spp. and common gut bacteria in primary liver carcinoma.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gastric and enteric Helicobacter species have been associated with the pathogenesis of some extragastric diseases. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated the presence of DNA of Helicobacter species in samples of the cancer and the surrounding tumour-free liver tissues of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC, n=12) and cholangiocarcinoma (CC, n=13). The patients were fr

Human aggrecanase generated synovial fluid fragment levels are elevated directly after knee injuries due to proteolysis both in the inter globular and chondroitin sulfate domains.

OBJECTIVE: To examine different aggrecanase generated fragments in synovial fluid (SF) from patients with acute and chronic knee injuries and from knee healthy subjects. METHODS: We prepared SF-D1 samples from acute (n=35) and chronic (n=35) knee injury patients and knee healthy subjects (n=10). Aggrecan fragments were analyzed in the SF-D1 samples by quantitative (G1, ARGS, KEEE and G3 antibodies

Rho-kinase regulates adhesive and mechanical mechanisms of pulmonary recruitment of neutrophils in abdominal sepsis.

We hypothesized that Rho-kinase signaling plays a role in mechanical and adhesive mechanisms of neutrophil accumulation in lung. Male C57BL/6 mice were treated with the Rho-kinase inhibitor Y-27632 prior to cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Lung levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO) and histological tissue damage were determined 6h and 24h after CLP. Expression of Mac-1 and F-actin formation in neutrop

Person--environment fit predicts falls in older adults better than the consideration of environmental hazards only.

Objective: To test the hypotheses that the empirical consideration of objective person-environment fit in the home environment is a stronger predictor of indoor falls among older adults than the assessment of environmental barriers only, and that perceived aspects of home play a role as predictors for falls.Design: Survey study with data collection at home visits, followed up by self-reports about

TRPV1 and TRPA1 stimulation induces MUC5B secretion in the human nasal airway in vivo.

Aim: Nasal transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) stimulation with capsaicin produces serous and mucinous secretion in the human nasal airway. The primary aim of this study was to examine topical effects of various TRP ion channel agonists on symptoms and secretion of specific mucins: mucin 5 subtype AC (MUC5AC) and B (MUC5B). Methods: Healthy individuals were subjected to nasal challeng

Cerebrovascular Angiotensin AT(1) Receptor Regulation in Cerebral Ischemia.

The mechanism behind the positive response to the inhibition of the angiotensin II receptor AT(1) in conjunction with stroke is elusive. Here we demonstrate that cerebrovascular AT(1) receptors show increased expression (upregulation) after cerebral ischemia via enhanced translation. This enhanced expression of AT(1) receptors occurs in the ischemic cerebral arteries and microvessels, and their in

Waveform Pattern Recognition – A New Semiquantitative Method for Analysis of Fetal Aortic and Umbilical Artery Blood Flow Velocity Recorded by Doppler Ultrasound

A semiquantitative computerized waveform pattern recognition system for analysis of the fetal descending aortic and umbilical artery Doppler flow velocity waveforms is presented. Based on empirically and manually selected clinical recordings from both vessels, 11 computerized and normalized standard curves for the aorta (type curves A to K), and 10 curves for the umbilical artery (type curves a to

Social networking, mobility, and the rise of liquid identities

This research focuses on representations of mobilities and their role in social networking on Facebook. Based on an ethnographic research design embedded in a grounded theory approach, the study investigates the mobility patterns of one Generation Y network. The analysis of 50 profiles in this network, including texts, photographs, photo albums and check-ins, suggests that Facebook fosters corpore
