Lund University supports publishing in OA journals: an examination

Emphasizing the role of Wnt5a protein expression to predict favorable outcome after radical prostatectomy in patients with low-grade prostate cancer

Wnt5a, a member of non-canonical wingless-related MMTV integration site family is a secreted glycoprotein that plays important roles in development and disease. Recent studies have shown that Wnt5a protein levels are up-regulated in prostate cancer, but contrasting reports exist on the role of Wnt5a to predict outcome after radical prostatectomy in patients with localized prostate cancer. Our grou

Impact of spacing and gain imbalance between two dipoles on HSPA throughput performance

This Letter reports the throughput performance of two parallel half-wavelength dipoles with different antenna spacings and antenna gain imbalances for two frequency bands in a live High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network. It was found that an antenna spacing of 0.25 wavelengths and gain imbalances of up to 6 dB are sufficient to provide significant throughput gain for the same transmit power, or e

Spin-alignment and g-factor Measurement of the I=12+ Isomer in 192Pb Produced in the Relativistic-energy Fragmentation of a 238U Beam

The feasibility of measuring g-factors using the TDPAD method applied to high-energy, heavy fragmentation products is explored. The 2623 keV I-pi = 12(+) isomer in Pb-192 with tau = 1.57 mu s has been produced using the fragmentation of a 1 A GeV U-238 beam. The results presented demonstrate for the first time that such heavy nuclei produced in a fragmentation reaction with a relativistic beam are

Spectra and ratios of identified particles in Au plus Au and d plus Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV

The transverse momentum (p(T)) spectra and ratios of identified charged hadrons (pi(+/-), K-+/-, p, (p) over bar) produced in root s(NN) = 200 GeV Au + Au and d + Au collisions are reported in five different centrality classes for each collision species. The measurements of pions and protons are reported up to p(T) = 6 GeV/c (5 GeV/c), and the measurements of kaons are reported up to p(T) = 4 GeV/

Use of Depuration Compounds in Passive Air Samplers: Results from Active Sampling-Supported Field Deployment, Potential Uses, and Recommendations

Deputation compounds (DCs) are added to passive air samplers (PAS) prior to deployment to account for the wind-dependency of the sampling rate for gas-phase compounds. This correction is particularly useful for providing comparable data for samplers that are deployed in different environments and subject to different meteorological conditions such as wind speeds. Two types of PAS-the polyurethane

Hospital admissions among people 65+related to multimorbidity, municipal and outpatient care

This study aimed at examine the number of planned and acute hospital admissions during 1 year among people 65+ and its relation to municipal care, outpatient care, multimorbidity, age and sex. Four thousand nine hundred and seven individuals having one or more admissions during 2001 were studied. Data were collected from two registers and comparisons were made between those having one, two and thr

Specific (CD2CD2SCHD2)-C-12-D-beta-C-12-D-gamma-C-13-H-epsilon Isotopomer Labeling of Methionine To Characterize Protein Dynamics by H-1 and C-13 NMR Relaxation Dispersion

Protein dynamics on the micro- to millisecond time scale is increasingly found to be critical for biological function, as demonstrated by numerous NMR relaxation dispersion studies. Methyl groups are excellent probes of protein interactions and dynamics because of their favorable NMR relaxation properties, which lead to sharp signals in the H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra. Out of the six different methyl

Secondary Fracture Prevention: Plucking The Low Hanging Fruit

It is well known that one fragility fracture begets another. Fracture Liaison Services have been shown to narrow the care gap that exists in the care of patients with fragility fractures. A secondary fracture prevention programme "OPTIMAL" (Osteoporosis Patient Targeted and Integrated Management for Active Living) has been in existence in the public restructured hospitals and polyclinics of Singap

Ceruloplasmin functional changes in Parkinson's disease-cerebrospinal fluid.

Ceruloplasmin, a ferroxidase present in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), plays a role in iron homeostasis protecting tissues from oxidative damage. Its reduced enzymatic activity was reported in Parkinson's disease (PD) contributing to the pathological iron accumulation. We previously showed that ceruloplasmin is modified by oxidation in vivo, and, in addition, in vitro by deamidation of specific NGR-mo

Between Uncertainty and Certainty

In this study, 10 hematologists and 10 lung oncologists were interviewed regarding the information they provide to patients in four situations of uncertainty: determining the treatment that is in the patient's best interest; recurrence or progression of the patient's disease; determining when to withdraw life-prolonging treatment; discussing death, addressing questions such as whether the patient

Ear Reconstruction. Clinical and physiological evaluations.

Popular Abstract in Swedish Mikroti är en medfödd avvikelse där ytterörat inte utvecklats normalt. Defekten kan variera från att örat nästan är normalt till att det saknas helt och hållet, s.k. anoti. I Sverige inträffar detta i c:a 2 fall per 100 000 nyfödda. Pojkar drabbas i större utsträckning och höger sida är den vanligaste. Båda sidor drabbas i c:a en tiondel av fallen. Förträngning av yttreMicrotia is a congenital malformation where the auricle is not fully developed. In some cases the malformation is complete and the auricle is absent. In Sweden the incidence of microtia is about 2 per 10,000 births. Reconstruction of the external ear is possible by using autologous rib cartilage in three surgical steps: rib cartilage transplantation, ear elevation and final adjustments. Although t

Dual-conjugate adaptive optics for wide-field high-resolution retinal imaging

We present analysis and preliminary laboratory testing of a real-time dual-conjugate adaptive optics (DCAO) instrument for ophthalmology that will enable wide-field high resolution imaging of the retina in vivo. The setup comprises five retinal guide stars (GS) and two deformable mirrors (DM), one conjugate to the pupil and one conjugate to a plane close to the retina. The DCAO instrument has a cl

Characterization of genetic variation in TLR8 in relation to allergic rhinitis.

A previous investigation of all 10 TLR-genes for associations with allergic rhinitis (AR) detected a number of significant SNPs in the TLR8 locus. The associations indicated that an accumulation of rare variants could explain the signal. The present study therefore searches for rare variants in the TLR8 region and also investigates the reproducibility of previous SNP associations.

When patient empowerment encounters professional autonomy: The conflict and negotiation process of inscribing an eHealth service

In Sweden, as in many other European countries, government and public agencies have promoted the expansion of eHealth over the past years, arguing that this development enhances patient participation, empowerment and cost efficiency. This paper presents a longitudinal study of the deployment of My medical records on the Internet, a civic service originally inspired by the home banking concept. The

Modeling Auxin-regulated Development.

The phytohormone auxin plays an essential role in many aspects of plant growth and development. Its patterning, intercellular transport, and means of signaling have been extensively studied both in experiments and computational models. Here, we present a review of models of auxin-regulated development in different plant tissues. This includes models of organ initiation in the shoot apical meristem

Compression of TW class laser pulses in a planar hollow waveguide for applications in strong-field physics

We demonstrate pulse post-compression of a TW class chirped pulse amplification laser employing a gas-filled planar hollow waveguide. A waveguide throughput of 80% is achieved for 50 mJ input pulse energy. Good focusability is found and after compression with chirped mirrors a pulse duration of sub-15 fs is measured in the beam center. Whereas a total energy efficiency of approximate to 70% should
