Developmental changes in the structure and function of the central olfactory system in gregarious and solitary desert locusts

Desert locusts are guided by olfactory cues in different behavioural contexts. In order to understand the basis for the variable olfactory guided behaviour displayed by different developmental stages and by solitary and gregarious locusts, we investigated their central olfactory system with neuroanatomical and neurophysiological methods. The primary olfactory centre of the brain, the antennal lobe

Prevention of joint destruction in antigen-induced arthritis

In rheumatoid arthritis (RA) erosive joint changes are the dominating cause of chronic disability. In a cohort of patients with RA followed from early stages of the disease, we have observed a much larger prevalence of destructions in hips than in knee joints. The latter were frequently injected with triamcinolone hexacetonide in contrast to the former. In order to elucidate a possible role of loc

Tinnitus and hearing loss in 15-16-year-old students: Mental health symptoms, substance use, and exposure in school

The current study assessed the responses from a survey titled 'Life and Health - Young People 2005', completed by 2878 15-16-year-old adolescents in mainstream schools in the county of Orebro, Sweden. Thirty-nine percent of students with hearing loss (slight, mild, or moderate) and 6% of students with normal hearing reported tinnitus often or always during the past three months. Almost no gender d

An experimental and numerical study of the effect of friction in single dowel joints

The effect of friction between the dowel and the surrounding timber was studied for single dowel-type joints. The joints tested were divided into two groups of joints, where the surface of the dowels differed. For the first group, the dowels had a smooth surface and for the second group the dowels had a rough surface. A contactfree measurement technique was used in the experimental investigation.

Enhanced efficacy of porcine lung surfactant extract by utilization of its aqueous swelling dynamics.

This study investigates the interactions between a porcine lung surfactant (PLS) extract and distilled water, saline solution or Ringer solution. The phases which coexist in equilibrium with water or electrolyte solutions were analysed by X-ray diffraction and cryo transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). A lamellar phase with a structure unit consisting of double bilayers was observed in wate

Altered control of gastric acid secretion in gastrin-cholecystokinin double mutant mice

Background & Aims: Three pathways control gastric acid secretion: the gastrin-enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cell axis, the vagus-parietal cell axis, and the cholecystokinin (CCK)-D cell axis. Mice lacking gastrin or both gastrin and CCK were examined to determine the role of the hormones. Methods: Acid was measured after pylorus ligation, and biopsies from gastrin knockout (KO), gastrin-CCK doub

A method for assembling a collaborative research team from multiple disciplines and academic centers to study the relationships between ECG estimation and MRI measurement of myocardial infarct size

A method has been developed for establishing a "University Without Walls" for the purpose of studying the relationship between electrocardiographic estimation and magnetic resonance imaging measurements of myocardial infarct size. The research team includes faculty and students from 4 medical centers, with expertise extending from clinical to technical. Weekly interactive videoconferences provide

Chemical derivatization of phosphoserine and phosphothreonine containing peptides to increase sensitivity for MALDI-based analysis and for selectivity of MS/MS analysis

Protein phosphorylation is one of the most important and common ways of regulating protein function in cells. However, phosphopeptides are difficult to analyse, ionising poorly under standard MALDI conditions. Several methods have been developed to deal with the low sensitivity and specificity of phosphopeptide analysis. Here, we show an approach using a simple one-step beta-elimination/Michael ad

Prescribing patterns for analgesics in relation to underprivileged area (UPA) score, mortality and suicide in 33 municipalities in the province of Skane, southern Sweden

BACKGROUND: Although it is well known that analgesics contribute to suicide, there is little knowledge about how much of the mortality and suicide can be explained by socioeconomic deprivation or by sales of analgesics. METHODS: This ecological study analyses the relationships between the sales (defined daily doses per 1000 inhabitants per day) of dextropropoxyphene, dextropropoxyphene combination

Exploring the meaning of everyday life, for those suffering from dementia

Living with dementia means struggling to preserve a sense of self, to retain (and reevaluate) one's values in a new situation, and to search for a new way of life. This study explored the meaning of everyday life as expressed by 11 people suffering from dementia. Data were collected through interviews with people in the early stage of a diagnosed dementia disease. The findings indicate that many p

Shake-Up and Shake-Off Excitations and Associated Electron Losses in X-Ray Studies of Proteins

Photoionization of an atom by X-rays usually removes an inner shell electron from the atom, leaving behind a perturbed hollow ion whose relaxation may take different routes. In light elements, emission of an Auger electron is common. However, the energy and the total number of electrons released from the atom may be modulated by shake-up and shake-off effects. When the inner shell electron leaves,

Water and solute movement in air pollution control residues measured by time domain reflectometry.

The mobility of pollutants from air pollution control (APC) residues is strongly influenced by its contact with water. This study aims to verify the applicability of time-domain reflectometry (TDR) to infer water and solute movement in situ in an APC residue–compost mixture in a laboratory column. The calibrated dielectric permittivity–volumetric water content relationship (K−thetav) for the mater

Radiation dose as a risk factor for malignant melanoma following childhood cancer

The aim of this study was to determine therapy-related risk factors for the development of melanoma after childhood cancer. Among 4401 3-year survivors of a childhood cancer in eight French and British centres and 25 120 patients younger than 20 years old at first malignant neoplasm (FMN) extracted from the Nordic Cancer Registries, 16 patients developed a melanoma as a second malignant neoplasm (
