Occupational Perspectives on Health in People with Schizophrenia

De första två är kvalitativa studier som handlar om tidsanvänding i förhållande till aktivitetsutförandet och aktivitetsengagemaThe thesis has provided with systematic information about how people with schizophrenia live their everyday life, and the results have shown significant relationships between occupational perspectives and health. The thesis departed in two in-depth studies that concerned time use and occupational engagement in relation to what people with schizophrenia do in their everyday life, with whom they are

Indications of improved cognitive development at one year of age among infants born very prematurely who received care based on the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP)

Background and Objective: Care based on the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP) has been reported to exert a positive impact on the development of prematurely born infants. The aim of the present investigation was to determine the effect of such care on the 1-year development of infants born with a gestational age of less than 32 weeks. Methods: All surviving

Observation of fusion-like residues in energetic nuclear collisions at the Celsius storage ring

Recent experiments at the CELSIUS storage ring of Uppsala, Sweden, have revealed the existence of high momentum transfer target-like fragments contrary to expectations. Recoiling heavy fragments in the reaction of 250 MCV/nucleon N-14 on Xe-131 have been measured at 10degrees with respect to the beam direction with specially designed recoil telescopes, Simulations with the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenb

Degradation of toxaphene in water during anaerobic and aerobic conditions

The degradation of technical toxaphene in water with two kinds of bioreactors operating in sequence was studied. One packed bed reactor was filled with Poraver(R) (foam glass particles) running at anaerobic conditions and one suspended carrier biofilm reactor working aerobically. Chemical oxygen demand (COD), chloride, sulphate, pH, dissolved oxygen, total toxaphene and specific toxaphene isomers

Markets are more than Bits

This paper argues that the main contribution of Mirowski's paper is the new combination of some seemingly unrelated ideas, like principles for market evolvement and automata theory. Furthermore, many of Mirowski's ideas ought to be inspiring for future economic research. However, it is argued that some ideas, if scrutinized, are difficult to motivate, and other need further refinement before they

Nerve regeneration enhancement by tourniquet

The use of tourniquet compression as a non-invasive method to enhance axonal regeneration was assessed in the rat sciatic nerve. One hind limb of the rat was subjected to compression by a tourniquet set at 300 mmHg for 30 or 120 min followed by bilateral test crush lesions performed either directly or after a conditioning interval of 3 or 6 days, with the non-compressed side serving as a control.

Binding of calcium ions and SNAP-25 to the hexa EF-hand protein secretagogin

Secretagogin is a hexa EF-hand protein, which has been identified as a novel potential tumour marker. In the present study, we show that secretagogin binds four Ca2+ ions (log K-1 = 7.1 +/- 0.4, log K-2 = 4.7 +/- 0.6, log K-3 = 3.6 +/- 0.7 and log K-4 = 4.6 +/- 0.6 in physiological salt buffers) with a [Ca2+](0.5) of approx. 25 mu M. The tertiary structure of secretagogin changes significantly upo

Operation of the ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker under very high irradiation at the CERN LHC

The ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) performance depends critically on the choice of the active gas and on its properties. The most important operational aspects, which have led to the final choice of the active gas for the operation of the TRT at the LHC design luminosity, are presented. The TRT performance expected at these conditions is reviewed, including pile-up effects at high lumino

Immunolocalization of cholecystokinin-2 receptors in rat gastric mucosa

Background: Gastrin exerts trophic effects on the gastric mucosa by mechanisms not yet completely elucidated. Our aim was to localize the cholecystokinin-2 (CCK2) receptor in epithelial cells of foetal and adult rat stomachs in order to determine the cell types that are directly affected by gastrin. Methods: Gastric tissue was subjected to indirect double immunofluorescence staining with antiserum

New methods for improved evaluation of patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome in the emergency department

This paper aims to identify and review new and unproven emergency department (ED) methods for improved evaluation in cases of suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Systematic news coverage through PubMed from 2000 to 2006 identified papers on new methods for ED assessment of patients with suspected ACS. Articles found described decision support models, new ECG methods, new biomarkers and point-

Macroeconomic variables and corporate performance

Increased economic and financial integration and substantial macroeconomic fluctuations require that corporate managers and investment analysts pay more attention than in the past to the link between the "noise" that these fluctuations represent and the company's performance-past and future. For many reasons, company managers must weed out the effects of the noise to obtain a clear picture of the

Acute taurodeoxycholate-induced pancreatitis in the rat is associated with hyperCCKemia

BACKGROUND: Cholecystokinin (CCK) has been suggested to be involved in the development and course of acute pancreatitis. In the present study we measured plasma CCK concentrations in acute experimental pancreatitis (AEP) in the rat, and evaluated the role of circulating CCK levels on the initial pancreatic damage in pancreatitis. METHODS: Endogenous hyperCCKemia was induced by surgical biliodigest

Acupuncture and transcutaneous nerve stimulation in stroke rehabilitation: a randomized, controlled trial

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In small trials with control groups that receive no intervention, acupuncture has been reported to improve functional outcome after stroke. We studied effects of acupuncture and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on functional outcome and quality of life after stroke versus a control group that received subliminal electrostimulation. METHODS: In a multicenter rando
