Electrothermal Simulation in a Concurrent Waveform Relaxation Based Circuit Simulator

The main purpose of this work is to study methods to simulate electro-thermal effects in integrated circuits using CONCISE a waveform relaxation based circuit simulator. WR is a method that is suitable to run on a multi-computer with state of the art computing power. Especially CMOS VLSI circuits have been simulated successfully with WR. With simulation experiments we have shown that it is possibl

Endothelin receptor changes during inflammation in the lung.

Bland medelålder's och äldre personer är kronisk obstruktiv lungsjukdom (KOL) vanligast, oftast etEndothelin-1 (ET-1) is an extremely potent smooth muscle spasmogen well known from the vascular system but also active within the airways. The importance of its proinflammatory and co-mitogenic properties has become increasingly evident, the endothelin system also having been shown to mimic the signal features of asthma, COPD and other pulmonary diseases. The present thesis concerns the role of th

Microcircuit tailoring in ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As

In order to search for novel giant-magnetoresistance systems, we fabricated and investigated narrow constrictions in the layers of the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. We found that constrictions a few hundred nanometers wide, tailored by means of the electron-beam lithography and wet etching, were not conducting at liquid helium temperatures unless illuminated, probably due to the trapping

The activity in the CNS catecholaminergic systems covaries with thyroid hormone metabolism in humans

Do the CNS monoaminergic (MA) systems regulate thyroid hormone metabolism in humans? In 23 unmedicated, male, violent offenders without signs of thyroid disease, we found positive correlations between the catecholaminergic CSF metabolites HVA and MHPG and the peripheral T3/T4 ratio (rho=0.55, p=0.010 and 0.51, p=0.018), indicating that increased activity in the brain MA systems, especially the dop

Treatment of displaced femoral neck fractures - A randomized minimum 5-year follow-up study of screws and bipolar hemiprostheses in 100 patients

In a randomized study of 100 patients having displaced femoral neck fractures (Garden types 34), we compared internal fixation using 2 von Bahr screws (n = 53) with a bipolar Variokopf prosthesis (n = 47). The duration of surgery was shorter and the blood loss was less in the group with screws. Dislocation of the prosthesis occurred in 7/47 patients, all within 4 months. After a minimum follow-up

Information interaction among computer scientists. A longitudinal study.

Introduction. The information behaviour of a group of Swedish computer scientists has been studied over a period of 20 years (1987-2006). Changes in their information seeking are addressed in terms of collaboration levels and discussed as examples of social practice. Method. Qualitative interviewing has been the main method for data collection. Analysis. Interview transcripts have been content ana

The problem of ozone depletion in northern Europe

Ozone in the atmosphere, mainly in the stratosphere, absorbs most of the ultraviolet-B (wavelength 280-315 nm) radiation from the sun, which can destroy DNA and other biologically important molecules and, thereby, damage living organisms. Due to the pollution of the atmosphere by humans, the ozone layer is presently being depleted, more rapidly at higher latitudes than at lower, and more rapidly o

Subalpine gully-head ribbon fens of the Lammerlaw and Lammermoor Ranges, Otago, New Zealand

Vegetation patterns of subalpine gully-head mires were investigated in the flat-topped Lammerlaw and Lammermoor Ranges, South Island, New Zealand. Two intensively studied mires each consist of a series of peaty terraces and scarps. Terraces may contain pools, elongated downslope in the narrow, lower altitude mire, but across slope in the broader, upper mire. A crest occurs on some terrace lips, an

Biological detoxification of tar-water

Gasification is an important option for the swift implementation of biomass combined heat and power. processes in the Danish energy supply system. Tar-water produced by the gas-cleaning system of gasifiers may contain substances toxic to nitrifying bacteria. As the gasification plants are small and often located in the catchment area of small wastewater treatment plants, discharge of the tar-water

Lack of Association Between the Trp719Arg Polymorphism in Kinesin-Like Protein-6 and Coronary Artery Disease in 19 Case-Control Studies

Objectives We sought to replicate the association between the kinesin-like protein 6 (KIF6) Trp719Arg polymorphism (rs20455), and clinical coronary artery disease (CAD). Background Recent prospective studies suggest that carriers of the 719Arg allele in KIF6 are at increased risk of clinical CAD compared with noncarriers. Methods The KIF6 Trp719Arg polymorphism (rs20455) was genotyped in 19 case-c

Size separations of starch of different botanical origin studied by asymmetrical-flow field-flow fractionation and multiangle light scattering.

Asymmetrical-flow field-flow fractionation combined with multiangle light scattering and refractive index detection has been revealed to be a powerful tool for starch characterization. It is based on size separation according to the hydrodynamic diameter of the starch components. Starch from a wide range of different botanical sources were studied, including normal starch and high-amylose and high
