Polymorphisms in Manganese Transporters SLC30A10 and SLC39A8 Are Associated With Children's Neurodevelopment by Influencing Manganese Homeostasis
Background: Manganese (Mn) is an essential element but at excessive levels, it is neurotoxic. Even a moderate increase in Mn has been suggested to interfere with neurodevelopment in children. Genetics influencing Mn concentrations and toxicity is unclear. Objective: We assessed, in a cross-sectional study, whether common single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the Mn transporters SLC39A8 (influx) and S
(Re)ranking Meets Morphosyntax: State-of-the-art Results from the SPMRL 2013 Shared Task
This paper describes the IMS-SZEGED-CIS contribution to the SPMRL 2013 Shared Task. We participate in both the constituency and dependency tracks, and achieve state-of-theart for all languages. For both tracks we make significant improvements through high quality preprocessing and (re)ranking on top of strongbaselines. Our system came out first for both tracks.
About phase optimization in multitone excitations
Multitone signals are often used as excitation for the characterization of audio systems. The frequency spectrum of the response consists of harmonics of the frequencies contained in the excitation and intermodulation products. Beside the choice of frequencies, in order to avoid frequency overlapping, there is also the need to choose adequate magnitudes and phases for the different components that
Characterisation of nonlinearities of electroacoustic devices using volterra kernels
Classical methods of characterization such as Total Harmonic Distortion, SMPTE Intermodulation or Difference Frequency Intermodulation, are widely used for electroacoustic device characterization. However, these methods only put in evidence some of the nonlinear effects for arbitrary excitations, resulting in non-ideal transfer functions, or interaction between two frequencies. More complex effect

Amplification of 2p as a genomic marker for transformation in lymphoma
To outline further genetic mechanisms of transformation from follicular lymphoma (FL) to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), we have performed whole genome array-CGH in 81 tumors from 60 patients [29 de novo DLBCL (dnDLBCL), 31 transformed DLBCL (tDLBCL), and 21 antecedent FL]. In 15 patients, paired tumor samples (primary FL and a subsequent tDLBCL) were available, among which three possessed
Alpha1-microglobulin is found both in blood and in most tissues
In this study we demonstrate that, in addition to blood, alpha1-microglobulin (alpha1m) is present in most tissues, including liver, heart, eye, kidney, lung, pancreas, and skeletal muscle. Western blotting of perfused and homogenized rat tissue supernatants revealed alpha1m in its free, monomeric form and in high molecular weight forms, corresponding to the complexes fibronectin-alpha1m and alpha

Time to onset of improvements in Quality of Life from Temperature-controlled Laminar Airflow (TLA) in severe allergic asthma
Background: Allergen avoidance is important in allergic asthma management. Nocturnal treatment with Temperature-controlled Laminar Airflow (TLA; Airsonett®) has been shown to provide significant reduction of exposure to allergens in the breathing zone, leading to long-term reduction in airway inflammation and improvement in quality of life. Allergic asthma patients uncontrolled on GINA step 4 were

On Mimicry, Signs and Other Meaning-Making Acts. : Further Studies in Iconicity
In an earlier paper, I set out to apply to animal mimicry the definition of the sign, and, more specifically, of the iconic sign, which I originally elaborated in the study of pictures, and which was then extended by myself and others to language, gesture, and music. The present contribution, however, while summarizing some of the results of those earlier studies, is dedicated to the demonstration
Repairing the brain : Cell replacement using stem cell-based technologies
Current approaches to cell replacement therapy in Parkinson's disease are strongly focused on the dopamine system, with the view that restoring dopaminergic inputs in a localized and physiologic manner will provide superior benefits in terms of effect and longevity compared with oral medication. Experience using transplants of fetal tissue containing dopaminergic cell precursors has provided valua
Atopic dermatitis, educational attainment and psychological functioning : a national cohort study
Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) might adversely affect academic performance, possibly through influences on psychological functioning such as stress resilience. Objectives: To investigate the association of atopic dermatitis with stress resilience, cognitive function and educational attainment. Methods: We used data from a national cohort of men who underwent a military conscription examination
Association of depressive symptoms with consumption of analgesics among adolescents
Purpose: To investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms, pain (headaches and stomachaches), and analgesic consumption in addition to the association between depressive symptoms and analgesic consumption among adolescents. Design and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in southern Sweden. The survey was distributed among students in grade 8 (aged 13–15 years, n = 878). Results:
Multi-state analysis of hemi- and total hip arthroplasty for hip fractures in the Swedish population—Results from a Swedish national database study of 38,912 patients
Introduction: Hip fractures are a common problem of the elderly population with significant mortality and morbidity. The choice between total hip arthroplasty (THA) and hemiarthroplasty depends on multiple factors including comorbidity. The Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register (SHAR) provides a unique opportunity to study mortality and revision rates in this population. Linkage with government databa
Quantum Crystallography: Current Developments and Future Perspectives
Crystallography and quantum mechanics have always been tightly connected because reliable quantum mechanical models are needed to determine crystal struc- tures. Due to this natural synergy, nowadays accurate distri- butions of electrons in space can be obtained from diffrac- tion and scattering experiments. In the original definition of quantum crystallography (QCr) given by Massa, Karle and Huan
