HZTool and Rivet: Toolkit and Framework for the Comparison of Simulated Final States and Data at Colliders.

A common problem in particle physics is the requirement to reproduce comparisons between data and theory when the theory is a (general purpose) Monte Carlo simulation and the data are measurements of final state observables in high energy collisions. The complexity of the experiments, the obervables and the models all contribute to making this a highly non-trivial task. We describe an existing lib

Connexin 26 mutations and nonsyndromic hearing impairment in Northern Finland

Objective: The aims of the present study were to evaluate the role of the gap junction protein beta-2 gene (GJB2), encoding connexin 26 (Cx26), in children with moderate to profound prelingual nonsyndromic sensorineural hearing impairment (HI) and to investigate the carrier frequencies of the GJB2 gene mutations in a control population in Northern Finland. Methods: Mutation analysis was performed

Quantification of the Formaldehyde Emissions from Different HCCI Engines Running on a Range of Fuels

In this paper, the formaldehyde emissions from three different types of homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines are quantified for a range of fuels by means of Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis. The engines types are differentiated in the way the charge is prepared. The characterized engines are; the conventional port fuel injected one, a type that traps resid

Review of particle physics

This biennial Review summarizes much of Particle Physics Using data from previous editions, plus 2205 new measurements from 667 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons We also summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as Higgs bosons, heavy neutrinos, and supersymmetric particles All the particle properties and searc

Inter-institutional reproducibility of flow cytometric DNA-analysis in breast carcinomas

In order to study interinstitutional reproducibility of flow cytometric DNA-analysis (DNA-FCM), frozen pieces from 30 consecutive breast carcinomas were analysed by 5 laboratories. Different instruments, preparation and DNA staining methods were used. A concordance in DNA-ploidy status was obtained in 26 of the 30 tumours. The discrepancy can mainly be explained by intratumoural DNA-heterogeneity

2,3-butanedione monoxime increases speed of relaxation in single muscle fibres of frog

The effects of 2,3-butanedione monoxime (BDM) on intracellular Ca2+ transient and cross-bridge function were studied in frog single fibres from the anterior tibialis muscle of Rana temporaria (sarcomere length, 2.2 m; temperature, 24 C). The fluorescent dye fluo-3 was used to monitor the intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca2+i) during isometric contractions. BDM (15 m M) reduced the ampli

High-density haplotype structure and association testing of the insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) gene with type 2 diabetes in 4,206 people

The insulin-degrading enzyme is responsible for the intracellular proteolysis of insulin. Its gene IDE is located on chromosome 10, in an area with suggestive linkage to type 2 diabetes and related phenotypes. Due to the impact of genetic variants of this gene in rodents and the function of its protein product, it has been proposed as a candidate gene for type 2 diabetes. Various groups have explo

Characterization of scatter and penetration using Monte Carlo simulation in 131I imaging

In 131I SPECT, image quality and quantification accuracy are degraded by object scatter as well as scatter and penetration in the collimator. The characterization of energy and spatial distributions of scatter and penetration performed in this study by Monte Carlo simulation will be useful for the development and evaluation of techniques that compensate for such events in 131I imaging.
