Analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer in district heating pipelines using the finite element method
The finite element method is applied to solve coupled steady-state fluid flow and heat transfer problems in insulated pipes of district heating networks. The main advantage of the finite element method involved here is the standard discretization and solution technique for both coupling of temperature-dependent physical properties in the thermo-hydraulic flow and for description of the multilayere
A clinical evaluation of the Zygoma fixture: One year of follow-up at 16 clinics
Purpose. To evaluate treatment outcome with Zygoma fixtures (Nobel Biocare, Goteborg, Sweden) with regard to fixture survival, patient satisfaction, and function of prosthesis replacement. Materials and Methods: The treatment outcome of 76 patients treated with 145 Zygoma fixtures at 16 centers was evaluated. Patient's and dentist's evaluations of the functional and aesthetic outcome of the treatm
The effect of operational temperature on dewatering characteristics of digested sludge
Dewatering properties and sludge structure of anaerobically digested sludge were studied in relation to an increasing operational temperature. Sludge samples were taken from 5 pilot-scale CSTR reactors treating municipal sewage sludge with working volume of 20 L and operating at 33, 35, 37, 39 and 55 degrees C, respectively. The main parameters of interest were capillary suction time (CST), concen
Is a nappy change stressful to neonates?
Objectives: Infants in neonatal intensive care (NICU infants) are often cared for in a stressful environment that includes potentially painful or stressful interventions. The aim was to investigate whether NICU infants have different pattern of stress and pain responses than healthy newborns when challenged by a non-painful everyday care routine. Methods: NICU infants born at 23-38 weeks gestation
Localization of the initial fibrillatory cycle in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation
BACKGROUND: Recent reports suggest the presence of conduction delay in the posterior septal region during sinus rhythm in patients with lone paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). OBJECTIVE: To explore the location of intra-atrial conduction delay associated with initiation of AF. DESIGN: In 8 lone AF patients (51 +/- 10 years), 20 AF paroxysms were induced during electrophysiological examination. B
A transient response study of the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia to nitrogen on Pt/CuO/Al2O3
The reaction mechanism for the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia to give nitrogen on CuO/Al2O3, Pt/Al2O3 and Pt/CuO/Al2O3 was investigated using transient experiments. Temperature-programmed desorption and reaction of adsorbed ammonia indicated the formation of NHx species at the surface, and that this species is the precursor for the formation of nitrogen and nitrogen oxides. Pt/CuO/Al2O3
Attosecond pulses generation with an ellipticity-modulated laser pulse
Attosecond pulse emission using a laser field with time-dependent ellipticity is studied experimentally and theoretically. Our theoretical approach is validated by comparison with experimental VUV spectra. We show in calculations that the VUV emission can be confined into a narrow temporal window in which the fundamental polarization is quasi-linear. We find an analytical equation describing the d
Heat Sensing Manikin Test Probe
A manikin test probe has been developed to simulate the thermal behaviour of human skin when exposed to thermal conditions likely to occur in fires. The threshold for second-degree burn injuries is evaluated from the temperature readings using a damage integral. The probe has been exposed to different radiation fluxes and the calculated damage criterion for second-degree burn injuries is in agreem
Spectroscopy of Nuclei Approaching the Proton Drip-line Using a Secondary-fragmentation Technique with the RISING Detector Array
An experiment utilizing a double fragmentation reaction was performed to study isobaric analogue states in A similar to 50 nuclei approaching the proton drip-line. gamma-ray spectroscopy will be used to identify excited states in the neutron-deficient nuclei produced in the second fragmentation reaction. Excited state level schemes will be obtained, through comparison with states in their well-kno

Investigation of electron transfer between cellobiose dehydrogenase from Myriococcum Thermophilum and gold electrodes
Cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) is a monomeric protein consisting of two subdomains: a larger flavin-associated domain (DHcdh) and a smaller heme-binding domain (CYTcdh), connected via a protease cleavable linker region. In this study, the inter-domain electron transfer, using the CDH from the ascomycete fungus Myriococcum thermophilum and thiol (SAM) modified gold electrodes, was investigated with

DNA-based classification and sequence heterogeneities in the 16S rRNA genes of Lactobacillus casei/paracasei and related species.
The sequence differences within the 16S rRNA genes of Lactobacillus casei/paracasei and related species, Lactobacillus zeae and Lactobacillus rhamnosus, were investigated. Thirty-seven strains of mostly human or cheese origin were grouped by restriction endonuclease analysis (REA) of the total chromosomal DNA and by temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TTGE) of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA

Obesity and myocardial infarction - vulnerability related to occupational level and marital status. A 23-year follow-up of an urban male Swedish population.
Baseline verbal fluency performance as predictor of state anxiety during a live hand-grenade throwing exercise - A prospective study of Swedish military conscripts
Background: We investigated whether individual differences in baseline executive control capacity could predict state anxiety during a potentially life-threatening situation. Methods: 19 Swedish military conscripts were assessed during two measurement occasions. During a baseline measurement, data regarding performance on a letter fluency task and state anxiety were assessed. During a second measu

Isometric and isotonic relaxation in venous smooth muscle
The time course of relaxation under isometric and isotonic conditions was studied in preparations of rat portal vein which maintained regular phasic contractions in solutions with increased [K-+] and [Ca-2+]. It was found that the smooth muscle during isotonic lengthening was able to carry the afterload for a period of time which was longer than expected from the control isometric response. The di
