A multi-disciplinary perspective on emergent and future innovations in peer review

Peer review of research articles is a core part of our scholarly communication system. In spite of its importance, the status and purpose of peer review is often contested. What is its role in our modern digital research and communications infrastructure? Does it perform to the high standards with which it is generally regarded? Studies of peer review have shown that it is prone to bias and abuse

Transport mode and the value of accessibility-a potential input for sustainable investment analysis

Accessibility plays an essential role in determining real estate prices and land use. An understanding of how accessibility and changes in accessibility influence real estate prices is key to making decisions regarding investments in infrastructure projects. From an accessibility point of view, it is not clear that there should be differences in valuation depending on the mode of public transport,

The Health Returns of University Eligibility

This paper exploits an arbitrary university eligibility rule in Sweden combined with regression discontinuity to estimate the impact of university education on health derived demand for medical care. We find a clear jump in university attendance due to university eligibility of between 10 and 14 percentage points. For females this implies a 30-40% drop in self-harm. For males it coincides with red

The Miracle of Wörgl

Recent attempts by several big tech companies to create their own currencies, such as Facebook's Libra, have drawn attention to monetary innovations. The case offers important insights for this debate by engaging with the wave of monetary innovation and entrepreneurship triggered by the unemployment and economic distress of the Great Depression in the 1930s. Through the vantage point of one of the

Next generation diabetes scientists shape global research culture

The annual Winter School of the Danish Diabetes Academy (DDA) in November 2019 challenged postdoctoral researchers with tough questions regarding research culture that scientists around the world are discussing. The complexity and competitiveness of modern research makes it increasingly difficult for junior researchers to navigate in the science community. This editorial reflects the voices of nea

Tracking attosecond electronic coherences using phase-manipulated extreme ultraviolet pulses

The recent development of ultrafast extreme ultraviolet (XUV) coherent light sources bears great potential for a better understanding of the structure and dynamics of matter. Promising routes are advanced coherent control and nonlinear spectroscopy schemes in the XUV energy range, yielding unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. However, their implementation has been hampered by the experim

The influence of dust growth on the observational properties of circumplanetary discs

Dust growth is often indirectly inferred observationally in star-forming environments, theoretically predicted to produce mm-sized particles in circumstellar discs, and also presumably witnessed by the predecessors of the terrestrial meteoritic record. For those reasons it is believed that young gas giants under formation in protoplanetary discs with putative circumplanetary discs (CPDs) surroundin

The origin of tail-like structures around protoplanetary disks

Aims. We study the origin of tail-like structures recently detected around the disk of SU Aurigae and several FU Orionis-type stars. Methods. Dynamic protostellar disks featuring ejections of gaseous clumps and quiescent protoplanetary disks experiencing a close encounter with an intruder star were modeled using the numerical hydrodynamics code FEOSAD. Both the gas and dust dynamics were taken int

Experimental investigation of the effect of variously-shaped ribs on local heat transfer on the outer wall of the turning portion of a U-channel inside solar air heater

In the present work, an experimental investigation of convective heat transfer and pressure drop was carried out for the turning portion of a U-channel where the outer wall was equipped with ribs. The shape of the ribs was varied. The investigation aims to give guidelines for improving the thermo-hydraulic performance of a solar air heater at the turning portion of a U-channel. Both the U-channel

Detection of atomic oxygen in a plasma-assisted flame via a backward lasing technique

In this Letter, we have investigated 845 nm lasing generation in atomic oxygen, present in a lean methane-air flame, using two-photon pumping with femtosecond 226 nm laser pulses, particularly focusing on the impact of nanosecond repetitively pulsed glow discharges forcing on the backward lasing signal. Characterizations of the backward lasing pulse, in terms of its spectrum, beam profile, pump pu

Principles for computational design of binding antibodies

Natural proteins must both fold into a stable conformation and exert their molecular function. To date, computational design has successfully produced stable and atomically accurate proteins by using so-called “ideal” folds rich in regular secondary structures and almost devoid of loops and destabilizing elements, such as cavities. Molecular function, such as binding and catalysis, however, often

Functionality of Spray-Dried Whey Protein Powders - Surface Composition, Particle Morphology and Rehydration

Whey protein powder functionality is expected to be closely linked to both structure and properties of the proteins. It is essential that whey protein powders are easily dispersed and dissolved in order to fulfil the specified nutrient content and the functionality in the final product. Poor rehydration can cause challenges on an industrial level as well as for the consumers. Access to Cross-Border Healthcare for Older Persons in the European Union : The Interplay between EU Law and Swedish Law

This thesis deals with older persons on the move and their access to cross-border healthcare in the European Union. The number of persons crossing borders within the EU has increased exponentially in recent decades. Free movement has been at the core of the European integration project from its early days. Although it was originally intended to apply only to those who were economically active, theThis thesis deals with older persons on the move and their access to cross-border healthcare in the European Union. Modelling the chemical evolution of Zr, La, Ce, and Eu in the Galactic discs and bulge

We study the chemical evolution of Zr, La, Ce, and Eu in the Milky Way discs and bulge by means of chemical evolution models compared with spectroscopic data. We consider detailed chemical evolution models for the Galactic thick disc, thin disc, and bulge, which have been already tested to reproduce the observed [α/Fe] versus [Fe/H] diagrams and metallicity distribution functions for the three dif

‘We are rich in mass graves’ : representing a history of violence through Êzîdî poetry

The 2014 Êzîdî Genocide caused a rupture in the social fabric of the Iraqi religious Êzîdî minority. A search for meaning in the aftermath of violence has caused a group of Şingalî poets to reconstruct memories of the past through their narration in Arabic prose poetry. A narrative analysis has been used on a selection of poems written and interviews conducted with five poets. I investigate their
