Research Methods in European Union Studies

This collection sets a new agenda for conducting research on the European Union (EU) and learns from past mistakes. In doing so it provides a state-of-the-art examination of social science research designs in EU studies while providing innovative guidelines for the advancement of more inclusive and empirically sensitive research designs in EU studies. The argument of this book is therefore that res

Tools and Ecosystems for Open Control Systems Data at ESS

We see a potential for ESS to benefit from sharing alarm data for machine learning applications, by establishing data ecosystem. To achieve these goal, ESS must make a strategic decision to pursue data sharing, establish a technical platform to share a digital twin, continue advancing the data ecosystem, and work towards a standardized reference model.

Another Theory is Possible : Dissident Voices in Theorising Europe

The past decade has witnessed the opening of a yawning chasm between scholarly attempts to theorise European union and the political realities of the EU (European Union) in crisis. The decade that has witnessed the ascendency of political systems analysis, neoliberal assumptions of efficiency and Europeanisation studies within Europe has also seen the failure of intergovernmental attempts to refor

Another Theory is Possible : Dissident Voices in Theorising Europe

The article argues that dissident voices which attempt to theorise Europe differently and advocate another European trajectory have been largely excluded and left unheard in mainstream discussions over the past decade of scholarship and analysis. Dissident voices in European Union studies are those that seek to actively challenge the mainstream of the study of Europe. The article briefly examines

Vertebral fracture : epidemiology, impact and use of DXA vertebral fracture assessment in fracture liaison services

Summary: Vertebral fractures are independent risk factors for vertebral and nonvertebral fractures. Since vertebral fractures are often missed, the relatively new introduction of vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) for imaging of the lateral spine during DXA-measurement of the spine and hips may contribute to detect vertebral fractures. We advocate performing a VFA in all patients with a recent fr

Next of kin participation in the care of older persons in nursing homes : A pre-post non-randomised educational evaluation, using within-group and individual person-level comparisons

BACKGROUND: Next of kin participation in care is a cornerstone of palliative care and is thus important in nursing homes, and outcomes following interventions need to be evaluated using robust methods.OBJECTIVE: To use within-group and within-individual analytical approaches to evaluate the participation of next of kin in care following an intervention and to compare the outcome between the interv

The Activation Series

This presentation discusses the development of the ‘The Activation Series’. Initiated in winter 2016-2017 this artistic method has led to the creation of the 5.1 surround sound installation 'I play Northern Lights' and the audio and video installation 'I play cement'. A third work is in progress in collaboration with Anders Hultqvist, Stefan Östersjö and Gunnar D. Hansson, with the first output pr

Research Strategies in European Union Studies : Beyond Dichotomies

The contributing chapters of this book all illustrate the richness and diversity of problem-driven research in EU studies. This concluding chapter draws together the insights of this rich diversity in order to move the study of research strategies beyond the dichotomies of the past towards a new agenda for research on Europe. The crisis gripping the EU in the 21st century is not just an economic c

Rural Living Standards and Inequality: A Case Study from Southern Sweden 1780-1919

For several decades a lively debate has been ongoing regarding how living standards andeconomic inequality actually developed during the agrarian and industrial revolutions in 19thcentury Western Europe. This study examines rural living standards and inequality amongcommon people in five Swedish parishes, based on circa 4,000 probate inventories in theperiod from 1780s to 1910s. It is probably the

Sharing archaeological knowledge : The Interactive Reporting System

This study describes the development of a digital reporting system designed to provide archaeologists with a dynamic and interactive 3D web platform that can be used for describing in great detail records and activities undertaken across a multi-year field investigation campaign. The system was used to compose the archaeological report of a multi-year investigation and employed during the pandemic

Widespread reduction in sun-induced fluorescence from the Amazon during the 2015/2016 El Niño

The tropical carbon balance dominates year-to-year variations in the CO2 exchange with the atmosphere through photosynthesis, respiration and fires. Because of its high correlation with gross primary productivity (GPP), observations of sun-induced fluorescence (SIF) are of great interest. We developed a new remotely sensed SIF product with improved signal-to-noise in the tropics, and use it here t

Sociology of Knowledge and Production of Normative Power in the European Union’s External Actions

The article focuses on the entanglement between the EU’s attempts to construct its external actions in global politics and research on the EU as a global actor. The article argues that both the development of EU external actions and the sociology of knowledge production surrounding the analysis of these actions suffer from unnecessary dichotomisation. Advocates and analysts of the EU’s normative p

A Modified Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Rating Scale

Background: The Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Rating Scale is a prospectively validated physician-rated measure of disease severity for progressive supranuclear palsy. We hypothesized that, according to experts' opinion, individual scores of items would differ in relevance for patients' quality of life, functionality in daily living, and mortality. Thus, changes in the score may not equate to cli

Changes in opioid-related deaths following increased access to opioid substitution treatment

Background: Opioid-related mortality is high and increasing in the Western world, and interventions aimed at reducing opioid-related deaths represent an important area of study. In Skåne County, Sweden, a patient choice reform resulted in increased access to opioid substitution treatment (OST). In addition, a gradual shift towards less restrictive terms for exclusion from OST has been implemented.
