Chromatin, epigenetics and stem cells
Epigenetics is a term that has changed its meaning with the increasing biological knowledge on developmental processes. However, its current application to stem cell biology is often imprecise and is conceptually problematic. This article addresses two different subjects, the definition of epigenetics and chromatin states of stem and differentiated cells. We describe mechanisms that regulate chrom
Increased levels of bacterial markers and CO2 in occupied school rooms
Our group previously demonstrated that carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in heavily occupied schools correlate with the levels of airborne bacterial markers. Since CO2 is derived from the room occupants, it was hypothesized that in schools, bacterial markers may be primarily increased in indoor air because of the presence of children: directly from skin microflora or indirectly, by stirring up dust from

Streptozotocin induced diabetes in minipig: a case report of a possible model for type 1 diabetes?
Studies on the pathogenic process in type 1 diabetes are often performed in animal models. Low-dose administration of streptozotocin has been used to induce diabetes with pathological alterations similar to human type 1 diabetes in the animals. Rodent models are frequently used but there is a need of developing new models including larger animals. In this study we wanted to investigate to what ext
Managing light polarization via plasmon-molecule interactions within an asymmetric metal nanoparticle trimer
The interaction of light with metal nanoparticles leads to novel phenomena mediated by surface plasmon excitations. In this article we use single molecules to characterize the interaction of surface plasmons with light, and show that such interaction can strongly modulate the polarization of the emitted light. The simplest nanostructures that enable such polarization modulation are asymmetric silv
Multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) in patients with diabetes mellitus and an enlarged foveal avascular zone (FAZ)
Purpose To assess the relationship between foveal microcirculation and central retinal function in diabetic patients having both an enlarged foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and a preserved visual acuity (0.6 or better). Methods Twenty-five patients with diabetes type 1 or 2 with an enlarged FAZ (largest diameter > 650 mum) measured in fluorescein angiograms were examined with multifocal ERG (mfERG). T
Endothelium-dependent relaxation after short-term preservation of vascular grafts
As the integrity of graft endothelium seems to be essential to successful long-term patency in coronary operations, its preservation demands the utmost care. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of currently used solutions on endothelium-dependent relaxation after short-term storage of vessels at room temperature or at 4 degrees C. The infrarenal rat aorta was selected for s

Detection of Helicobacter ganmani-Like 16S rDNA in Pediatric Liver Tissue
Background. To determine the presence of Helicobacter species in the liver biopsy specimens from children with various chronic liver diseases as data in adult literature suggests a possible role of these bacteria in their pathogenesis.Materials and methods. Paraffin sections of 61 liver biopsies of pediatric patients with miscellaneous diseases and autopsy liver tissue from 10 control subjects wit
Fusion of the EWSR1 and ATF1 genes without expression of the MITF-M transcript in angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma
Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is a rare soft tissue tumor that usually occurs in children and young adults. Only two cases of AFH with genetic rearrangements have been reported previously; both of these had a FUS-ATF1 fusion gene. We have studied an AFH from a 9-year-old boy whose tumor displayed a t(12;22)(q13;q12) as the sole cytogenetic aberration. FISH,RT-PCR, and sequence analyses re

Changes in microfungal community structure after fertilization of Scots pine forest soil with ammonium-nitrate or urea
The microfungal population structure of two Scots pine forest soils in Southern Sweden was studied 8–13 yr after nitrogen fertilization. The different fertilizers used. ammonium nitrate and urea. influenced the species composition in different ways. The main effect of the NH4NO3 treatment was an increased isolation frequency of Penicillium spinulosum and 4Oidiodendron echinulatum, while Penicilliu
Enterococcus faecalis heme-dependent catalase
Enterococcus faecalis cells cannot synthesize porphyrins and do not rely on heme for growth but can take up heme and use it to synthesize heme proteins. We recently described a cytochrome bd in E. faecalis strain V583 and here report the identification of a chromosomal gene, katA, encoding a heme-containing cytoplasmic catalase. The 54-kDa KatA polypeptide shows sequence similarity to members of t
Cerebral pattern of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in dementias
The knowledge regarding putative inflammatory component(s) participating in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VAD) is scarce. Recently, we have demonstrated the presence of certain inflammatory cytokines in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of demented patients. Although the initial event(s) triggering the neurodegenerative processes in AD versus VAD may be different and lead to differen
Long-term anhydrobiotic survival in semi-terrestrial micrometazoans
This study represents the first systematic investigation of long-term anhydrobiotic survival in tardigrades, rotifers and nematodes inhabiting mosses and lichens. Sixty-three different samples from public and private collections, kept dry for 9-138 years, were examined. Rotifers of the genus Mniohia and the eutardigrade Ramazzottius oberhaeuseri (hatched from eggs) were found alive from one of the

Between Fall and Fall-Rise : Substance-Function Relations in German Phrase-Final Intonation Contours
This study investigates an intonation contour of German whose status has not been established yet: a globally falling contour with a slight rise at the very end of the phrase (FSR). The contour may be said to lie on a phonetic continuum between falling (F) and falling-rising (FR) contours. It is hypothesized that F, FR and FSR differ with respect to their communicative functions: F is terminal, FR
