Tactical Drinking in a Female University Kendo Club

Research that engages with the intersection of sport and gender needs to consider aspects of social interaction not only of the physical component of the sport but also the other day-to-day activities related to it. The examination of women and kendo-related hegemonic drinking in this chapter provides an insightful perspective and highlights the value of the ethnographic method in unexplored place

On the Asymptotic Performance of Low-Complexity Decoded LDPC Codes with Constituent Hamming Codes

Hamming code-based LDPC (H-LDPC) block codes are obtained by replacing single parity-check codes in Gallager's LDPC codes with Hamming constituent codes. This paper investigates the asymptotic error-correcting capabilities of ensembles of random H-LDPC codes, used over the binary symmetric channel and decoded with a low-complexity hard-decision iterative decoding algorithm. The number of required

Imaging for precision medicine : can V-P SPECT measure mepolizumab response in asthma?

Monoclonal antibody therapies are effective for many but not all people with severe asthma. Precision medicine guides treatment selection using biomarkers to select patients most likely to respond according to their inflammatory endotypes. However, when assessing response to treatment, greater precision is required. We report a case series describing treatment response to mepolizumab in four sever

Beta cell function in participants with single or multiple islet autoantibodies at baseline in the TEDDY Family Prevention Study : TEFA

Aim: The aim of the present study was to assess beta cell function based on an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in participants with single islet autoantibody or an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IvGTT) in participants with multiple islet autoantibodies. Materials and methods: Healthy participants in Sweden and Finland, between 2 and 49.99 years of age previously identified as positive for

Distances and parallax bias in Gaia DR2

We derive Bayesian distances for all stars in the radial velocity sample of Gaia DR2, and use the statistical method of Schönrich, Binney & Asplund to validate the distances and test the Gaia parallaxes. In contrast to other methods, which rely on special sources, our method directly tests the distances to all stars in our sample. We find clear evidence for a near-linear trend of distance bias

Radial abundance gradients in the outer Galactic disk as traced by main-sequence OB stars

Context. Elemental abundance gradients in galactic disks are important constraints for models of how spiral galaxies form and evolve. However, the abundance structure of the outer disk region of the Milky Way is poorly known, which hampers our understanding of the spiral galaxy that is closest to us and that can be studied in greatest detail. Young OB stars are good tracers of the present-day chem

Global irrigation contribution to wheat and maize yield

Irrigation is the largest sector of human water use and an important option for increasing crop production and reducing drought impacts. However, the potential for irrigation to contribute to global crop yields remains uncertain. Here, we quantify this contribution for wheat and maize at global scale by developing a Bayesian framework integrating empirical estimates and gridded global crop models

Renegotiating Quality TV in the Swedish Press : American Serial Television and Sweden's Post-Monopoly Television Landscape

In this article, I explore the reception of American “quality” serial television in Sweden from 1999 to the mid-2010s. My analysis includes how cultural critics and journalists writing for Sweden's leading newspapers conceptualised American serial television as “quality TV” and as legitimate “art”, and it charts the ways in which these discourses relate to the reconfiguration of Swedish television

Accumulation of cellular prion protein within β-amyloid oligomer plaques in aged human brains

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the main cause of dementia, and β-amyloid (Aβ) is a central factor in the initiation and progression of the disease. Different forms of Aβ have been identified as monomers, oligomers, and amyloid fibrils. Many proteins have been implicated as putative receptors of respective forms of Aβ. Distinct forms of Aβ oligomers are considered to be neurotoxic species that trigger

Swedish predicative oblique case : default or not?

This article describes and discusses an ongoing change of case marking, NOM(inative) > OBL(ique), in certain predicates in Swedish (type “Then you can be I” > “Then you can be me”). This change has gone largely unnoticed hitherto. The discussion is based on a large-scale online survey, conducted in May 2016. It was tested whether the change relates to finiteness or to semantics. The results strong

Peasants' rights and agrarian violence in transitional settings: From transitional justice to transformative agrarian justice

This article addresses why the rights of peasants and agrarian violence matter to justice promotion work that seeks to lay the groundwork for future peace and stability. Its central contention is that although rural people have participated in transitional justice processes, the field is yet to engage with peasants as a distinct social group, with the social, economic, and political issues they fa

Continuous glucose monitoring systems give contact dermatitis in children and adults despite efforts of providing less ‘allergy- prone’ devices : investigation and advice hampered by insufficient material for optimized patch test investigations

Background: Medical devices are increasingly being reported to cause contact allergic dermatitis reactions. Objective: Review of patients with diabetes type I referred for suspected allergic contact dermatitis to insulin pump or glucose sensor systems. Method: We have reviewed 11 referred diabetes mellitus patients investigated for allergic contact dermatitis reactions to medical devices and speci

Differential delay constrained multipath routing for SDN and optical networks

In multipath routing, maximization of the cardinality K of the disjoint-path set for a given source and destination assuming an upper bound on the differential delay D is one of the key factors enabling its practical applications. In the paper we study such an optimization problem for multipath routing involving maximization of K under the D constraint as the primary objective, and then minimizati

Product-service systems and sustainability : Analysing the environmental impacts of rental clothing

Business models like product-service systems (PSSs) often recognise different sustainability goals and are seen as solutions for the impacts of consumption and fast fashion, but there is a lack of evidence supporting the environmental claims of such business models for clothing. The research aimed to understand if rental clothing business models such as PSSs have the environmental benefits often p

Translation and psychometric evaluation of the Swedish versions of the Nuss Questionnaire modified for Adults and the Single Step Questionnaire

Background: Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common congenital chest wall deformity. Most individuals with PE suffer from psychosocial problems, with low self-esteem and poor body image. Correctional surgery for PE is available, the most widely used is the Nuss procedure. The Nuss procedure has previously been reported to improve self-esteem, body image and health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Theories and myths of European Foreign Policy

The uncertainties over how to interpret European Foreign Policy (EFP), understood as the nexus between European Union and member state foreign policies, are multiplied in a more global era reconfigured by globalizing, multilateralizing and multipolarizing processes. In order to make greater sense of EFP in a global political-cultural context, this chapter will consider the ways in which political

Non-Overlapping Domain Decomposition Methods For Dual Total Variation Based Image Denoising

In this paper non-overlapping domain decomposition methods for the pre-dual total variation minimization problem are introduced. Both parallel and sequential approaches are proposed for these methods for which convergence to a minimizer of the original problem is established. The associated subproblems are solved by a semi-smooth Newton method. Several numerical experiments are presented, which sh
