An experimental and theoretical study has been made of the 3s-3p and 3p-d transitions in Ni XIX. The method of beam-foil spectroscopy, using 30-64 MeV Ni ions from a tandem accelerator, has been combined with theoretical calculations using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) program.

The intercombination transition 3s21S0 -3s3p3P1 0 in Ni16+ and Cu17+ has been studied by beam-foil spectroscopic methods. Decay curve analysis yields lifetime values of (12.0±1.0)ns and (8.8±0.6)ns for Ni and Cu in agreement with various predictions.
We have used the beam-foil technique to measure the decay of the 3p2P1/2,2P3/2 and 3d2D3/2,2D5/2 levels in Ar VIII and the 3s3p ‘P, 3s3d ' D, 3p1 lS, and 'D levels in Ar VII. From the measured lifetimes, transition probabilities are deduced for both allowed and spin-forbidden transitions.
