Automatic segmentation of myocardium at risk from contrast enhanced SSFP CMR: validation against expert readers and SPECT.

Efficacy of reperfusion therapy can be assessed as myocardial salvage index (MSI) by determining the size of myocardium at risk (MaR) and myocardial infarction (MI), (MSI = 1-MI/MaR). Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) can be used to assess MI by late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) and MaR by either T2-weighted imaging or contrast enhanced SSFP (CE-SSFP). Automatic segmentation algorithms have

IgA Structure Variations Associate with Immune Stimulations and IgA Mesangial Deposition.

IgA1 mesangial deposition is the hallmark of IgA nephropathy and Henoch-Schönlein purpura, the onset of which often follows infections. Deposited IgA has been reported as polymeric, J chain associated, and often, hypogalactosylated but with no information concerning the influence of the IgA repertoire or the link between immune stimuli and IgA structure. We explored these issues in the α1KI mouse

Improved hand function in a dental hygienist with neuropathy induced by vibration and compression: The effect of cutaneous anaesthetic treatment of the forearm.

We report a case of neuropathy induced by vibration and compression in the hand of a dental hygienist. Her hand function was improved considerably by repeated treatment during which EMLA(R) cream (EMLA(R) cream is a local anaesthetic agent containing lidocain 2.5% and priolocain 2.5%) was applied to the forearm to induce cutaneous anaesthesia.

Variability in Dryness and Wetness in Central Finland and the Role of Teleconnection Patterns

Interannual variability in meteorological dryness and wetness in central Finland during the period 1959–2009 was analysed using Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) on three timescales (annual, seasonal and monthly). For different time steps (12, 3 and 1 months) of SPI values (SPI12, SPI3 and SPI1), trends based on the Mann-Kendall non-parametric test and the most significant relationships with

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of soft tissue sarcoma: benefits and limitations.

Purpose. Examine the benefits and limitations of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNA) used as the definitive diagnostic method before treatment.Method. Review of the 25 year experience at a multidisciplinary musculo-skeletal centre where FNA is the primary diagnostic approach to soft tissue sarcoma in the extremities and trunk wall and the experience of various experts in the field.Results. FNA h

Performance of Reduced-Complexity Transmit/Receive-Diversity Systems

We consider wireless systems with maximal-to the different transmit antennas are weighted replicas of ratio combining diversity at the base station, and hybrid selection/maximal ratio combining at the mobile station. We have recently proposed these systems, which provide high-quality data links, while keeping the complexity at the mobile station low. We analyze their performance in various realist

Toll-Like Receptor 4 Promoter Polymorphisms: Common TLR4 Variants May Protect against Severe Urinary Tract Infection.

BACKGROUND: Polymorphisms affecting Toll-like receptor (TLR) structure appear to be rare, as would be expected due to their essential coordinator role in innate immunity. Here, we assess variation in TLR4 expression, rather than structure, as a mechanism to diversify innate immune responses. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We sequenced the TLR4 promoter (4,3 kb) in Swedish blood donors. Since TLR4
