Autonomic nervous symptoms in primary Sjogren's; syndrome.

Objectives. Objective signs of autonomic dysfunction (AD) have been reported in patients with primary SS (pSS) while the presence of associated symptoms has not been systematically studied. Therefore, the aims of this study were (i) to assess the presence and severity of various AD symptoms in pSS patients and (ii) to relate AD symptoms to other clinical features of pSS. Methods. Thirty-eight pSS

Isotropic diffusion weighting using a triple-stimulated echo pulse sequence with bipolar gradient pulse pairs

Microscopic diffusion anisotropy in porous materials can be quantified from diffusion NMR data acquired with a combination of directional and isotropic diffusion encoding. A drawback with current pulses sequences for isotropic encoding is that they all rely on spin echo sequences, which are only applicable to pore liquids with long transverse relaxation times and porous materials with negligible i

Lead Contamination of Subarctic Lakes and Its Response to Reduced Atmospheric Fallout: Can the Recovery Process Be Counteracted by the Ongoing Climate Change?

Can a climate-triggered export of old contaminants from the soil alter the lead (Pb) contaminant burden of subarctic lakes? To address this question, we reconstructed the pollution history of three high latitude lakes situated in a region where a recent climatic shift has occurred. Dated sediment records were used as archives of past Pb inputs to the lakes, where the difference in the (206)Pb/(207

Memantine and reduced time with dyskinesia in Parkinson's Disease.

The partial glutamate antagonist amantadine is currently used in clinical practice, to reduce dyskinesia developing as a side-effect of levodopa treatment in patients suffering from Parkinson's disease (PD). This study was aimed at evaluating the antidyskinetic effect of another glutamate antagonist, memantine.

Flow and Temperature Distribution in an Experimental Engine: LES Studies and Thermographic Imaging

Temperature stratification plays an important role in HCCI combustion. The onsets of auto-ignition and combustion duration are sensitive to the temperature field in the engine cylinder. Numerical simulations of HCCI engine combustion are affected by the use of wall boundary conditions, especially the temperature condition at the cylinder and piston walls. This paper reports on numerical studies an

Ecological importance of the thermal emissivity of avian eggshells

Breeding birds have to divide their time between egg incubation and foraging. Particularly in cases when only one parent incubates the eggs, and especially in cold climates, the cooling of the eggs during absence from the nest may be problematic. In the present study we find that the thermal emissivity of eggshells may be ecologically important, and that an evolutionary pressure towards lower emis

Colombian Children With Overweight and Obesity Need Additional Motivational Support at School to Perform Health-Enhancing Physical Activity

Aims: The aim of this study is to investigate associations of screen-time and physical activity (PA) with self-efficacy for PA, intrinsic motivation to PA and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Colombian schoolchildren from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods, and to compare these variables among children with normal-weight (NW), overweight (OW) and obesity (OB). Methods: In 678 s

D-S(+) meson production at central rapidity in proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV

The P-T-differential inclusive production cross section of the prompt charm-strange meson D-s(+) in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5 was measured in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV at the LHC using the ALICE detector. The analysis was performed on a data sample of 2.98 x 10(8) events collected with a minimum-bias trigger. The corresponding integrated luminosity is L-

The Autism-Tics, AD/HD and other Comorbidities inventory (A-TAC): further validation of a telephone interview for epidemiological research

Background: Reliable, valid, and easy-to-administer instruments to identify possible caseness and to provide proxies for clinical diagnoses are needed in epidemiological research on child and adolescent mental health. The aim of this study is to provide further validity data for a parent telephone interview focused on Autism - Tics, Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD), and other Comor

Altered synaptic properties during integration of adult-born hippocampal neurons following a seizure insult.

Pathological conditions affect several stages of neurogenesis in the adult brain, including proliferation, survival, cell fate, migration, and functional integration. Here we explored how a pathological environment modulates the heterogeneous afferent synaptic input that shapes the functional properties of newly formed neurons. We analyzed the expression of adhesion molecules and other synaptic pr

Covered versus uncovered self-expandable nitinol stents in the palliative treatment of malignant distal biliary obstruction: results from a randomized, multicenter study

Background: Covered biliary metal stents have been developed to prevent tumor ingrowth. Previous comparative studies are limited and often include few patients. Objective: To compare differences in stent patency, patient survival, and complication rates between covered and uncovered nitinol stents in patients with malignant biliary obstruction. Design: Randomized, multicenter trial conducted betwe

Consumption management in the Nord Pool region: A stability analysis

Integration of fluctuating renewables like wind and solar power is nowadays a hot topic, but this comes at a cost of decreased stability of the power system. The deterioration often translates into so-called spikes and drops in the electricity spot price, very large (even extreme) deviations from the regular spot price, followed by a reversion to roughly the original level a few days later. We use

Institutions, smart specialisation dynamics and policy

Smart specialisation features prominently in the European regional policy context. This paper discusses how the configuration of the regional institutional framework affects smart specialisation dynamics and policy. It elaborates why and how institutional diversity and integration promote entrepreneurial discovery processes, spillovers and agglomeration effects, and thereby structural change in re

Band structure of core-shell semiconductor nanowires

We have calculated band structures for strained core-shell nanowires involving all combinations of AlN, GaN, and InN, as well as all combinations of AlP, GaP, AlAs, GaAs, InP, InAs, AlSb, GaSb, and InSb, as functions of core and shell radii. This gives 78 combinations, most of which have not been experimentally realized, and provides a quite complete overview of which interesting structures can be

Growth of doped InAsyP1-y nanowires with InP shells

We have studied the growth of doped InAsyP1-y (InAsP) NWs and InAsP-InP core-shell NWs. Using hydrogen chloride (HCl) we were able to prevent radial growth on the InAsP NWs. Undoped and H2S-doped InAsP NWs had almost pure wurtzite crystal structure, while DEZn-doped NWs showed wurtzite periodically separated by short sections of pure zincblende with rotational twins. Electrical measurements confir
