Failure Analysis With a New Tool Geometry, X-Die, in Areas With High Tension/Compression Strains

Sheet-metal forming involves a complex strain distribution over the part. The strains consist of tension, compression, and a mix of both. A geometry has been developed, the X-Die, in order to gain insight into the strain behavior of different materials. The X-Die enables strain paths far into the tension/compression region, thus creating the possibility to extend the experimental base both for def

Quantitative studies of the wakes of freely flying birds in a low-turbulence wind tunnel

A novel application of DPIV methods is presented for measuring velocity and vorticity distributions in vertical cross sections through the wake of a freely flying bird (thrush nightingale) in a wind tunnel. A dual-camera system is used, and successive cross-correlation operations remove lens/camera distortions, and then the undisturbed background flow, so that the final operation simply examines t

Design and implementation of reciprocal unit

This paper presents the design and implementation of a reciprocal unit, in which the initial approximation of the reciprocal is obtained using a look-up table and a multiplication. How to create a look-up Table efficiently is described in detail, and the error analysis for the ROMs of different sizes is also given in this paper. The presented design utilizes a 27

Use of dynamic step response for control of fed-batch conversion of lignocellulosic hydrolyzates to ethanol

Optimization of fed-batch conversion of lignocellulosic hydrolyzates by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was studied. The feed rate was controlled using a step response strategy, in which the carbon dioxide evolution rate was used as input variable. The performance of the control strategy was examined using both an untreated and a detoxified dilute acid hydrolyzate, and the performance was compa

Prevalence of Clostridium botulinum types B, E, and F in faecal samples from Swedish cattle.

Faeces were collected from 60 cows at three slaughterhouses situated in southern and central Sweden. The faecal samples were collected during two sampling periods over the year, summer and winter. All samples were analysed for the presence of Clostridium botulinum spores, according to a combined selection and enrichment PCR procedure. One PCR assay was specific for part of the type B neurotoxin ge

Total levels of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 in plasma yield high diagnostic sensitivity and specificity in patients with colon cancer

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure total levels of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP-1) by ELISA in plasma from blood donors, patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and patients with cancer and to correlate the results to patient diagnosis. Experimental Design: Total TIMP-1 plasma levels were measured by ELISA in blood samples from two different blood donor popul

Interfemale variation in egg yolk androgen allocation in the European starling: do high-quality females invest more?

Androgenic hormones occur naturally in bird egg yolk and are known to enhance growth in canary and gull chicks. Gil et al. (1999, Science, 286, 126-128) have recently proposed that female allocation of androgens to eggs represents a form of costly maternal investment. This hypothesis predicts that females of high quality or high reproductive potential should invest more yolk androgens in their egg

Search for gravitational waves from low mass compact binary coalescence in LIGO's sixth science run and Virgo's science runs 2 and 3

We report on a search for gravitational waves from coalescing compact binaries using LIGO and Virgo observations between July 7, 2009, and October 20, 2010. We searched for signals from binaries with total mass between 2 and 25M(circle dot); this includes binary neutron stars, binary black holes, and binaries consisting of a black hole and neutron star. The detectors were sensitive to systems up t

The influences of childhood and adult socioeconomic position on body mass index: A longitudinal Swedish cohort study.

Background: Low socioeconomic position (SEP) in adulthood has been associated with overweight and obesity in high-income countries. However, little is known about the contribution of childhood SEP to weight change. Using a Swedish general population sample, this study aimed to examine the association between five-year weight gain among adults and socioeconomic position in childhood and adulthood.

The binatural orbitals of electronic transitions

The well-known natural orbitals are defined as eigenfunctions of a one-particle reduced density operator, and can be obtained from a computed density matrix by diagonalization. Similarly, in this article we define the binatural orbitals, which are obtained for a pair of wave functions by a singular value decomposition of a reduced transition density matrix. The pair of states would usually be eige

Epoxidation of olefins with molecular oxygen as the oxidant using gold catalysts supported on polyoxometalates

4 We report a highly efficient green process for the epoxidation of various olefins using polyoxometalate-supported gold nanoparticles as catalysts and using oxygen as the terminal oxidant. The nanoparticles were prepared through thermal reduction of Au(III) and were characterised by TEM and XPS. The elemental composition of the catalyst was also determined using ICP. The results show that higher

Complement inhibitor CD55 governs the integrity of membrane rafts in pancreatic beta cells, but plays no role in insulin secretion.

CD55 is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored protein, which inhibits complement activation by acting on the complement C3 convertases. CD55 is widely localized in the cholesterol rich regions of the cell plasma membrane termed membrane rafts. CD55 is attached to these specialized regions via a GPI link on the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane. Membrane rafts anchor many important signaling p

Longing for unconsciousness

In the following paper, I intend to approach certain aspects of excessive, or heavy, drinking in the Middle East (and elsewhere) from a mainly psychological point of view. This psychological approach is meant to be complementary to the historical approach adopted in many of the other contributions to our conference. Having said this, I may perhaps be excused for referring to scholars and authors n

Patterns of hematologic malignancies and solid tumors among 37,838 first-degree relatives of 13,896 patients with multiple myeloma in Sweden

There are emerging data to suggest a role for genetic factors in the pathogenesis of multiple myeloma (MM). Based on small numbers, certain solid tumors have been reported to occur more frequently among blood relatives of patients with MM. Using population-based data, we assessed risks for hematologic malignancies, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), and solid tumors among f

Optical properties and morphology of InAs/InP (113)B surface quantum dots

We report on long-wavelength photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature from self-organized InAs surface quantum dots grown by gas-source molecular beam epitaxy on a GaInAsP/InP (113)B substrate. The influence of arsenic pressure conditions during growth on the PL emission of surface quantum dots is detailed as well as oxide/contamination layer formation after growth. Experimental results
