Alignment of valence photoemission, x-ray absorption, and substrate density of states for an adsorbate on a semiconductor surface

A method for determining the placement of x-ray absorption data into an experimental density of states for an adsorbate-semiconductor system is motivated and illustrated with the cases of bi-isonicotinic acid, isonicotinic acid, and benzoic acid on rutile TiO2(110). Special attention is paid to experimental aspects, as well as the role of Z+1 effects and the choice of reference level.

Eclampsia in Scandinavia: incidence, substandard care, and potentially preventable cases

Background. Description of incidence, clinical signs, symptoms, and consequences of eclampsia in Scandinavia, and assessment of substandard care and potential preventability. Methods. A descriptive cohort study including all women giving birth in a 2-year period (mid-1998-mid-2000) in Scandinavia. Notifications of eclampsia cases were obtained from all obstetric units at 3-monthly intervals. All p

Analysis of clinical characteristics, management and survival of patients with Ta T1 bladder tumours in Sweden between 1997 and 2001

Objective. To analyse the management and outcome of patients with Ta T1 urinary bladder cancer in a population-based national database. Material and methods. Between 1997 and 2001, 94% of all newly diagnosed cases of urinary bladder cancer were registered in the Swedish National Bladder Cancer Register. Data were analysed regarding gender, healthcare region, stage and grade for patients with Ta T1

Breastfeeding and allergic disease: a multidisciplinary review of the literature (1966-2001) on the mode of early feeding in infancy and its impact on later atopic manifestations

Background: Strategies to prevent children from developing allergy have been elaborated on the basis of state-of-the-art reviews of the scientific literature regarding pets and allergies, building dampness and health, and building ventilation and health. A similar multidisciplinary review of infant feeding mode in relation to allergy has not been published previously. Here, the objective is to rev

Relation between lung function, exercise capacity, and exposure to asbestos cement

A group of 137 male workers with known exposure (mean 20 fibre years per millilitre) to asbestos cement who had symptoms or signs of pulmonary disease was studied together with a reference group of 49 healthy industrial workers with no exposure to asbestos. Lung function measurements were made at rest and during exercise. Evidence of lung fibrosis was found as well as of obstructive airways diseas

A Detailed Kinetic Model for Calculation of the Soot Particle Size Distribution Function

The soot particle size distribution was studied via numerical simulation under diesel like engine conditions using a detailed kinetic soot model. Two different mathematical methods of the soot model description have been used in this work. In the first part of the work, the method of moments is presented. In addition, a so called sectional method for the soot particle size distribution function in

Radiographic prediction of failure after fixation of cervical hip fracture

During 1984-1985, 410 patients with cervical hip fracture were randomized between 2 methods of internal fixation--a single nail (Rydell) or 2 LIH hook pins (LIH). The patients were followed-up prospectively for at least 2 years. Radiographs were taken after 1 week, 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months. The radiographs of the 295 patients alive 2 years postoperatively were examined by one of the authors. The

Should heritage management be democratized? The Denkmalpflegediskussion in Germany.

This paper is about the recent discussions (known as Denkmalpflegediskussion) on the general organization of heritage management in Germany. The main issue discussed was whether heritage management should be further denationalized (’entstaatlicht’) and made the responsibility of individual citizens in order to serve better both the monuments and the people. A number of fundamental criticisms were
