First evidence of the Cretaceous decapod crustacean Protocallianassa from Sweden

An assemblage of the burrowing ghost shrimp, Protocallianassa faujasi, is described, providing the first evidence of this decapod species from Sweden. The fossils occur in successions of the informal earliest late Campanian Belemnellocamax balsvikensis zone at Åsen and the latest early Campanian B. mammillatus zone at Ivö Klack, both in the Kristianstad Basin of NE Skåne. Numerous, heavily calcifi

Biology of polyphosphate-accumulating bacteria involved in enhanced biological phosphorus removal

Recent research on the process of biological phosphorus removal in lab-scale treatment systems has indicated that: (i) the development of an actively poly?-accumulating bacterial community after the introduction of an anaerobic period may take at least 4 months; (ii) up to 80% of all aerobic bacteria isolated from these communities are able to accumulate polyP; (iii) polyP synthesized by the bacte

Recent developments in the biochemistry and ecology of enhanced biological phosphorus removal

Most of the genes encoding the enzymes involved in polyP synthesis and degradation and in phosphate transport have been studied in various Gram-negative bacteria. Progress has also been made in studying the biochemicalmechanisms underlying the process of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR), in particular in lab-scale systems fed with acetate or acetate plus glucose as the sole carbon and

Green packaging development in theory and practice

In the light of the environmental challenges society is facing it is important thatboth products and their packaging systems are optimised from an environmental perspective. Previous research highlights that environmental optimisation of packaging requires an integrated assessment of product and packaging together.Theory on green packaging development (GPD) is comprehensive and there areexamples o

Late Cretaceous (Campanian) actinopterygian fishes from the Kristianstad Basin of southern Sweden

Although a diverse range of aquatic vertebrates are documented from the Upper Cretaceous (mid-Campanian) marine strata of the Kristianstad Basin in southern Sweden, only chondrichthyans and marine amniotes have been described in detail to date. In contrast, coeval actinopterygians are virtually unreported, yet their remains are extremely abundant at most sampled localities. A comprehensive assessm

Aeolian activity in Sweden: an unexplored environmental archive

During the course of this three-year project, we have studied aeolian deposits at 70 sites within sixteen areas in south-central Sweden. Inland dunes have been the focus, but some sites with coversand and coastal dunes have also been investigated. We have mapped dune morphology, mainly by LiDAR-based remote sensing, studied the internal sediment architecture by ground-penetrating radar profiling a

Late Cretaceous dinosaurian remains from the Kristianstad Basin of southern Sweden

Mesozoic dinosaur fossils are exceptionally rare in Scandinavia. The Swedish record is typically depauperate, with the Kristianstad Basin of SkÅne (Scania) yielding all of the known fossils from Swedish Cretaceous strata. Although highly fragmentary, these body remnants are important because they provide evidence of a relatively diverse fauna, including previously recognized hesperornithiform bird

Rational modelling and design in timber engineering applications using fracture mechanics

The paper gives a general discussion on methods and theories used for strength analyses of wood and wood-based products. The main aim is to discuss in general terms the benefits gained from using design approaches based on rational and scientifically sound theories. The paper presents mainly fracture mechanics theory but also other advanced modelling techniques and examples from using advanced mea

Implementation of Low-latency Signal Processing and Data Shuffling for TDD massive MIMO Systems

Low latency signal processing and high throughput implementations are required in order to realize real-time TDD massive MIMO communications, especially in high mobility scenarios. One of the main challenges is that the up-link and down-link turnaround time has to be within the coherence time of the wireless channel to enable efficient use of reciprocity. This paper presents a hardware architectur

Mapping Film-World Relations to Reality : A New Conceptual Cartography

In order to distinguish various film-worlds among themselves and from our intersubjective, shared reality I propose to introduce two parameters: warpedness and enfoldednes. The various ratios between these two parameters serve to create what I call »the film-world map«. The time-imageʼs embeddedness within the temporal dimension is what I mean by strong enfoldedness. A world that is enfolded is a

Transportation of Dangerous Goods: A Multiple Stakeholder Analysis for Improved Efficiency and Safety through Information Sharing

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of multiple stakeholders’ needs, benefits and challenges, with a focus on information sharing, to improve efficiency and safety in the transportation of dangerous goods by road, rail, and sea.Design/methodology/approachInspired by grounded theory, this study is based on 21 semi-structured interviews with stakeholders representing au

Effects of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy on Perivascular Groin Infections after Vascular Surgery. Wound Healing, Cost-Effectiveness and Patient-Reported Outcome.

Abstract Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) in the groin after vascular surgery is common and deep perivascular infection leads to long periods of hospitalization, sometimes to amputation and/or death. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is increasingly used for treating wounds such as deep perivascular groin infections after vascular surgery, but there is no scientific evidence supporti

Hope Wanted : Wall Writing Protests in Times of Economic Crisis in Athens

This paper discusses the urban writing on Athenian walls as an imaginative medium of intercommunication occurring during the socioeconomic and political crisis era in Greece, over the last seven years. The street art activity on the city’s walls as a linguistic and imagery phenomenon could be approached as the main symbolic mode of public expression generated by the crisis. To investigate it field

Is sulphur a typical alpha element?

Observationally, the galactic chemical evolution of sulphur shows a complex pattern. Some studies find no correlation between [S/Fe] and [Fe/H] at halo metallcities, which is typical for alpha -elements, others find [S/Fe] increasing towards lower metallicities, and still others find a combination of the two. Each scenario has different implications for the Galactic chemical evolution of sulphur.
