Solvent-free membrane extraction of volatile fatty acids from acidogenic fermentation

Diversification of anaerobic digestion into higher value products, namely volatile fatty acids (VFAs), is receiving interest. One of the biggest challenges with this is recovery of the VFAs. Membrane extraction can be used, and a novel process configuration using a non-porous silicone membrane and water for an extractant is proposed here. This process would enable the reduction in the number of d

Applied in situ product recovery in ABE fermentation

The production of biobutanol is hindered by the product's toxicity to the bacteria, which limits the productivity of the process. In situ product recovery of butanol can improve the productivity by removing the source of inhibition. This paper reviews in situ product recovery techniques applied to the acetone butanol ethanol fermentation in a stirred tank reactor. Methods of in situ recovery inclu

A comparison of the energy use of in situ product recovery techniques for the Acetone Butanol Ethanol fermentation

The productivity of the Acetone Butanol Ethanol (ABE) fermentation can be significantly increased by application of various in situ product recovery (ISPR) techniques. There are numerous technically viable processes, but it is not clear which is the most economically viable in practice. There is little available information about the energy requirements and economics of ISPR for the ABE fermentati

Taming of Oxygen in the Electron Microscope : Effects of High Energy Electron Irradiation on O2 and Oxides

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is an atomic resolution technique that allows for in depth analysis of the properties of different materials by passing high energy electrons through a thin sample and detecting how they are affected. However, due to the strong interaction between electrons and matter, the probability of the sample remaining unperturbed by the electron irradiation is small. T

Captive offshoring, innovation and market diffusion : evidence from the Swedish Community Innovation Survey

Although the effects of captive offshoring on firm innovation have increasingly become a subject of study, the literature did so far not distinguish between the effects on introducing innovation as opposed to the effects their market diffusion. This distinction is important. By integrating insights from the innovation diffusion literature, we argue that the effects of captive offshoring on home ba

Postnatal phenobarbital for the prevention of intraventricular haemorrhage in preterm infants

Background: Intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) is a major complication of preterm birth. Large haemorrhages are associated with a high risk of disability and hydrocephalus. Instability of blood pressure and cerebral blood in the newborn flow are postulated as causative factors. Another mechanism may involve reperfusion damage from oxygen free radicals. It has been suggested that phenobarbital stab

Hand-arm vibration : Swedish carpenters' perceptions of health and safety management

Background: Workers in the construction industry are highly exposed to vibration from handheld equipment, which can have negative effects on the nerves and blood vessels in the hands. Employers in this industry often fail to comply with legislation regarding vibration exposure. Aims: To assess carpenters' perceptions of proactive health and safety (H&S) management regarding hand-arm vibration

AMENABILITY PROPERTIES OF TσA,σB

We first define a new multiplication on triangular Banach algebras. Then study amenability, weak amenability, biflatness and biprojectivity of these algebras.

Essays on the effect of health care and the environment on health

This thesis consists of three self-contained papers studying different topics in health economics. The first chapter studies the substitution effect between in-person physician visits and a new type of doctor visits, direct-to-consumer (DCT) telemedicine, where a person can call a doctor directly via an app. To causally assess to which degree DCT consultations substitute for in-person consultation

Personalgruppens psykologi

ON KANNAN-GERAGHTY MAPS AS AN EXTENSION OF KANNAN MAPS

Extending the concept of weakly Kannan maps on metric spaces, we study the maps as $f:X\rightarrow X$ on a metric space $(X, d)$ satisfying condition $d(f(x), f(y)) \leq (1/2)\beta(d(x, y))[d(x ,f(x)) + d(y, f(y))]$ for every $x, y\in X$ and a function $\beta: [0, \infty)\rightarrow [0,1)$ where for every sequence $t=\{t_n\}$ of non-negative real numbers satisfying $\beta(t_n)\rightarrow 1,$ while

Self-reported quality of life before, during, and after pregnancy in women with CHD

Background:Adults with CHD are a growing patient group and childbirth is a relatively new phenomenon. EQ-5D is commonly used to measure health-related quality of life. We sought to investigate EQ-5D status before, during, and after pregnancy in women with CHD.Methods:We identified 128 pregnancies in 86 CHD women giving birth in Skåne County during 2009–2021. Repeated measures ANOVA was performed t

Layer-by-layer deposition of open-pore mesoporous TiO 2- Nafion® film electrodes

The formation of variable thickness TiO 2 nanoparticle- Nafion® composite films with open pores is demonstrated via a layer-by-layer deposition process. Films of about 6 nm diameter TiO 2 nanoparticles grow in the presence of Nafion® by "clustering" of nanoparticles into bigger aggregates, and the resulting hierarchical structure thickens with about 25 nm per deposition cycle. Film growth is chara

Growth-collapse mechanism of PEI-CTAB films at the air-water interface

We reveal a growth-collapse mechanism for self-assembled films of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at the air-water interface. The work involved the quantification of film thickness on the micron scale through tracking oscillations in the amplitude and phase angles using single-angle, single-wavelength ellipsometry. Our results allow us to propose the following int

Incorporation of sparingly soluble species in mesostructured surfactant-polymer films

Recently we have investigated the formation of novel thick, solid, mesostructured films of polymer/surfactant mixtures which form spontaneously at the air-solution interface. Here we report studies of the effect of adding a series of sparingly soluble species to the precursor solution, to alter the mesostructure of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide/polyethylenimine films and to investigate the incorp

Further Improvements in the Long-Range Order of MCM-41 Materials

Synthetic methods for making an all-silica MCM-41 mesoporous silicate of high long-range order are reported. The product shows up to seven orders of X-ray diffraction and good stability under calcination conditions. The greatest improvement in structure occurs when the pH is held between 9 and 10 during synthesis and the sulfate anion is present.
