Global phylogeography of the avian malaria pathogen Plasmodium relictum based on MSP1 allelic diversity

Knowing the genetic variation that occurs in pathogen populations and how it is distributed across geographical areas is essential to understand parasite epidemiology, local patterns of virulence, and evolution of host-resistance. In addition, it is important to identify populations of pathogens that are evolutionarily independent and thus free' to adapt to hosts and environments. Here, we investi

Acute stress trajectories 1 year after a breast cancer diagnosis.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the longitudinal trajectories of acute stress reactions over the course of diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up assessments in a group of non-metastatic breast cancer patients during five different moments of the illness process, and to identify psychological predictors of the trajectories.

Accounts and Accountability. Impairment of goodwill

The core sense of accountability is the demanding and giving of accounts. Especially, when the outcome is negative, the management can be expected to account for the failure event, contextualizing the numerical outcome. In this paper the particular failure event of goodwill impairment, and the response of the management in the financial report is studied. Even though not necessarily being a failur

Multi-steps green process for synthesis of six-membered functional cyclic carbonate from trimethylolpropane by lipase catalyzed methacrylation and carbonation, and thermal cyclization.

A highly functionalized six-membered cyclic carbonate, methacrylated trimethylolpropane (TMP) cyclic carbonate, which can be used as a potential monomer for bisphenol-free polycarbonates and isocyanate-free polyurethanes, was synthesized by two steps transesterifications catalyzed by immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B, Novozym®435 (N435) followed by thermal cyclization. TMP was functionalized

Scattering by inhomogeneities in parallel plate waveguides

Electromagnetic scattering by a bounded object located inside a parallel plate waveguide is the subject of this paper. The exciting field in the waveguide is either an arbitrary source located at a finite distance from the obstacle or a plane wave generated in the far zone. The analytic treatment of the problem relies on an extension of the null field approach or Tmatrix method.

The Undercut Criterion of Pinion Shaper Cutters: And an Improvement by Modifying the Basic Rack Profile

The fillet of the gear tooth is highly stressed in operation; so for heavily loaded gears, the fillet geometry must be controlled. The manufacturer's task is to, within acceptable tolerances, produce the gear to the designer's specifications regardless of the manufacturing method. Most often gear cutting tools are used that work under generating conditions. The tool will form the gear tooth; so to

Heat integration of a fermentation-based hydrogen plant connected with sugar factory

The paper is concerned with heat integration of a conceptual hydrogen plant connected with a sugar factory. The sugar factory serves as a source of sucrose-containing thick juice for the hydrogen plant, where this feedstock is processed to hydrogen. Moreover, this connection gives an opportunity to utilize waste heat from the sugar factory. Hydrogen is produced by two-stage fermentation, that is,

Clinical and epidemiologic aspects of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Special emphasis on cardiovascular outcome and risk factors

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic disease, with an increased risk of co-morbidity from cardiovascular disease (CVD), in particular among those with severe disease. Environmental risk factors are of potential interest for both prevention and treatment of RA. Our aim was to examine changes in the occurrence of CVD over time and, using immunohistochemistry, study markers of inflammation in vas

Macular Dysfunction and Morphology in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 7 (SCA 7)

Purpose: To characterize the clinical phenotype regarding retinal function and macular appearance in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA 7), with an emphasis on electrophysiological findings. Methods: Three patients from two Swedish families were given an ophthalmological examination including visual acuity, fundus inspection, Farnsworth's color vision test, Goldmann perimetry, full-f

Public awareness and willingness to pay for tackling smog pollution in China: a case study

In recent years, smog has become one of greatest challenges in China and many other countries. However, there are limited attentions of measuring public environment awareness of air pollution and the relations between public environmental awareness and smog prevention in a Chinese context. This study was designed to investigate the facts of public environmental awareness in a typical city of China

Multi-link MIMO channel modeling using geometry-based approach

Geometry-based stochastic channel models (GSCMs) are extended to support multi-link simulations by applying the concept of common clusters. This novel approach aims to control the correlation between different links, inter-link correlation, by adjusting the amount of power simultaneously propagating via the same clusters in the different links. The behavior of common clusters is analyzed based on

Cerebrospinal fluid levels of IL-6 are decreased and correlate with cognitive status in DLB patients.

Inflammatory processes have previously been shown to influence cognition and progression of dementia. An involvement of interleukin (IL)-6 has in particular been suggested as altered levels of IL-6 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have been found in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Also, an association between cognitive decline and levels of IL-6 in CSF have been reported. The aim of the presen

Museum finances: challenges beyond economic crises

Economic crises directly and indirectly affect the financial health of museums. Despite this reality, however, analysing the impact of the economic cycle on museums has not generated much interest among researchers; to date published studies on the recent financial crisis and its reverberations in the museum sector are rare. This article, after acknowledging this lack of research, discusses specif

Iduronic Acid in Chondroitin/Dermatan Sulfate: Biosynthesis and Biological Function

The ability of chondroitin/dermatan sulfate (CS/DS) to convey biological information is enriched by the presence of iduronic acid. DS-epimerases 1 and 2 (DS-epi1 and 2), in conjunction with DS-4-O-sulfotransferase 1, are the enzymes responsible for iduronic acid biosynthesis and will be the major focus of this review. CS/DS proteoglycans (CS/DS-PGs) are ubiquitously found in connective tissues, ba

Condition-dependent individual decision-making determines cyprinid partial migration

Partial migration is a common phenomenon among many animals and occurs in many types of ecosystems. Understanding the mechanisms behind partial migration is of major importance for the understanding of population dynamics and, eventually, ecosystem processes. We studied the effects of food availability on the seasonal partial migration of cyprinid fish from a lake to connected streams during winte

Heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine elicits similar antibody response as standard 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine in adult patients with RA treated with immunomodulating drugs.

The objectives of the study were to compare antibody response in immunosuppressed patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) after vaccination with heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) to that of RA patients and healthy controls vaccinated with 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) and to study the impact of disease and/or treatment characteristics and type of vaccine on antibody resp

Structure of the Rh2O3(0001) surface

We have studied the (0001) surface termination of Rh2O3 on a Rh(111) single crystal using a combination of high resolution core level spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory. By exposing the Rh(111) to atomic oxygen we are able to grow Rh2O3 layers exposing the (0001) surface. The experiments support the theoretical predictions sta
