Anti-Nazi 'superstar' or 'racist'? Sture Bolin's politics: continuity, change, and later evaluations
In the spring of 1945, survivors of the Nazi concentration camps arrived in southern Sweden. A project was launched to collect eye-witness accounts of their experiences and document them for posterity. The scholar in charge of this project was Sture Bolin, professor of history at Lund University After his death Erik Lonnroth hailed him as a 'world-famous' historian. By the turn of the century he w
Fog-basking behaviour and water collection efficiency in Namib Desert Darkling beetles
Background: In the Namib Desert fog represents an alternative water source. This is utilised by Darkling beetles (Tenebrionidae) that employ different strategies for obtaining the fog water. Some dig trenches in the sand, while others use their own bodies as fog collectors assuming a characteristic fog-basking stance. Two beetle species from the genus Onymacris have been observed to fog-bask on th
Thermohaline Mixing And Its Role In The Evolution Of Carbon And Nitrogen Abundances In Globular Cluster Red Giants: The Test Case Of Messier 3
We review the observational evidence for extra mixing in stars on the red giant branch (RGB) and discuss why thermohaline mixing is a strong candidate mechanism. We recall the simple phenomenological description of thermohaline mixing and aspects of mixing in stars in general. We use observations of M3 to constrain the form of the thermohaline diffusion coefficient and any associated free paramete
A mobile multi-depth borehole sensor set-up to study the surface-to-base seismic transfer functions
The best method to evaluate the seismic site response is by means of borehole vertical arrays that use earthquake records from different depths. In this paper we introduce the implementation of a single borehole sensor system (synchronized to a sensor on the surface) that is fixed at variable depths within a single well. This system is used for recording small amplitude earthquake signals at varia
Floorball-related eye injuries: The impact of protective eyewear.
Several previous studies have shown that floorball belongs to a high-risk group of sports in terms of eye injuries. Protective eyewear is available, but the extent of its use and impact on eye injuries are unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the current incidence of eye injuries caused by floorball and to compare it with the present use of protective eyewear. Medical records were
Fotblomflugor Platycheirus (Diptera, Syrphidae) längs den svenska fjällkedjan: en flerårig inventering.
The fauna of hoverflies in Boreal and Arctic parts of Scandinavia is still very poorly investigated. Therefore we performed an 11 year survey of the hoverfly genus Platycheirus Lepeletier & Serville, 1828 along the Caledonian mountain chain in Sweden (from Värmland northwards to the Torneträsk area). During 2003-2013 we annually performed two trips in order to survey various areas and to colle
Singular inverse Wishart distribution and its application to portfolio theory
The inverse of the standard estimate of covariance matrix is frequently used in the portfolio theory to estimate the optimal portfolio weights. For this problem, the distribution of the linear transformation of the inverse is needed. We obtain this distribution in the case when the sample size is smaller than the dimension, the underlying covariance matrix is singular, and the vectors of returns a
The influence of the local structure of Fe(III) on the photocatalytic activity of doped TiO2 photocatalysts-An EXAFS, XPS and Mossbauer spectroscopic study
Fe(III)-doped TiO2 based heterogeneous photocatalysts were prepared by the sol-gel technique (S samples) or flame hydrolysis (F samples). In photocatalytic phenol decomposition, the undoped F-sample performed much better, than the undoped S one. However, for the S samples, photocatalytic activity first increased with the increasing Fe(III) concentration, and then passed through a maximum, while Fe
Determinants Of Arterial Stiffness In An Elderly Urban Population-Based Cohort With 17 Years' Follow-Up
Fyrtiotalisterna och äldreomsorgen - massmediala konstruktioner av en ny sorts omsorgstagare
Baby boomers and elderly care: expectations in print media about a new kind of care users The Swedish baby boomer generation known as the forties generation has been characterized as youthful and powerful. At present, members of this generation are entering the category of old age and in about ten years they will start reaching ages where the likelihood of encountering elderly care increases signi
Adaptation of surface water supply to climate change in central Iran
Mould resistance design (MRD) model for evaluation of risk for microbial growth under varying climate conditions
The risk for microbial growth depends on the microclimatic conditions at material surfaces. In the building envelope the microclimate will vary significantly with time. Whether microbial growth will occur or not, depends on humidity, temperature, duration of exposure and type of material (substrate). A limit state for onset of mould growth is here defined as a prescribed level observed by microsco
Detectors for the European Spallation Source
The European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden will become the world's leading neutron source for the study of materials by 2025. First neutrons will be produced in 2019. It will be a long pulse source, with an average beam power of 5 MW delivered to the target station. The pulse length will be 2.86 ms and the repetition rate 14 Hz. The ESS is presently in a design update phase, which ends i
PSYCHO-PEDAGOGICAL WORK AMONG INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS IN COMMUNITY-BASED ACCOMMODATION. Development and psychometric testing of the Environmental Rating Scale Questionnaire (ERS-Q) for assessment of residential programmes.
The increased prevalence of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) challenges society to evaluate the quality and efficacy of community based psycho-pedagogical programmes in order to achieve progress and to attain an acceptable level of quality of life for its citizens. The overarching aim of this thesis was to gain knowledge about staff’s pedagogical work and to provide a method for as
Using computed tomography and digital radiography of the human body to visualize metal fragments from bomb explosions – A preliminary report
A thoracic phantom, with embedded fragments of uranium (U) and iron (Fe) of different sizes, was imaged with digital radiography, standard-dose CT and low-dose CT and the detectable size of the fragments was recorded. U and Fe fragments were detected in diameters down to 100 mu m and 300 mu m, respectively with the standard-dose CT and digital radiography. The size limit using the low-dose CT was

Amorphous Silica Preservation in an Anthropogenic Soil: An Explorative Study of "Plaggen" Soils
Amorphous Silica (ASi) is present in considerable amounts in most soils and serves as a (micro-)nutrient for many plants. However, our understanding of the response of this important nutrient pool to human or natural disturbances is still very limited. One of the reasons for this is the long time scales involved. This explorative study focuses on the effect of a historical agricultural system, cal
Auger electron and photoabsorption spectra of glycine in the vicinity of the oxygen K-edge measured with an X-FEL
We report the first measurement of the near oxygen K-edge auger spectrum of the glycine molecule. Our work employed an x-ray free electron laser as the photon source operated with input photon energies tunable between 527 and 547 eV. Complete electron spectra were recorded at each photon energy in the tuning range, revealing resonant and non-resonant auger structures. Finally ab initio theoretical
