Drug targeting to the brain: Transfer of picolinic acid along the olfactory pathways

Picolinic acid (PA) protects against quinolinic acid- and kainic acid-induced neurotoxicity in the brain. To study the uptake of PA to the brain, we administered [H-3]PA via a unilateral nasal instillation or iv injection to mice. Autoradiography demonstrated a rapid uptake of radioactivity in the olfactory nerve layer and in the ipsilateral olfactory bulb (OB) following nasal instillation of [H-3

GAD65 autoantibody epitopes in adult patients with latent autoimmune diabetes following GAD65 vaccination

Aims Subcutaneous injection of recombinant human GAD65 (rhGAD65) in patients with latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) correlates with an increase in C-peptide levels. In this study we analysed the effect of rhGAD65 administration on the GAD65-specific autoimmune response. Methods Longitudinal serum samples obtained from LADA patients (n = 47) who received 4, 20, 100 or 500 mu g alum-formul

ADP Acting on P2Y13 Receptors Is a Negative Feedback Pathway for ATP Release From Human Red Blood Cells.

Red blood cells may regulate tissue circulation and O-2 delivery by releasing the vasodilator ATP in response to hypoxia. When released extracellularly, ATP is rapidly degraded to ADP in the circulation by ectonucleotidases. In this study, we show that ADP acting on P2Y(13) receptors on red blood cells serves as a negative feedback pathway for the inhibition of ATP release. mRNA of the ADP recepto

Synthesis and conformational analysis of 9,10-bis-aminomethyl-11,12-dicarboxy-dibenzobarrelene derivatives

The synthesis of bis-gamma-amino acid dibenzobarrelene derivatives (9,10-bis-aminomethyl-11,12-bis-carboxy-dibenzobarrelene) is presented. Bromomethylation of anthracene followed by azide substitution gave 9,10-bis-azidomethylanthracene. Azide reduction, N-Boc protection, and Diels-Alder cycloaddition in DMAD furnished the protected 9,10-bis-aminomethyl-11,12-dicarboxy-dibenzobarrelene derivative,

Radiation dose reduction in computed skeletal radiography. Effect on image quality.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of radiation dose reduction on image ++quality in computed musculoskeletal radiography and determine optimal exposure range. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 11 corpses, 1 hand and 1 hip were examined with film-screen radiography, and a series of computed radiographs was obtained using exactly the same technique except for the exposure, which was 100, 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, an

Urban driving patterns - characterisation, variability and environmental implications.

– dvs att finna mått för att karakterisera olika egenskaper hos körmönster., 3) Vad Driving patterns, i.e. the speed and acceleration profiles of vehicles affect exhaust emission and fuel consumption considerably. This project was aimed at investigating urban driving patterns by focusing on the following issues: 1) how to measure driving patterns, 2) measures for the description of driving patterns, 3) identification of characteristics of driving patterns that have significant ef

Measurement of the e(+)e(-)-> W+W- gamma cross-section and limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings with DELPHI

W(+)W(-)gamma production at LEP2 is studied using data collected with the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies between 189 GeV and 209 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 600 pb(-1). Cross-sections are measured for the production of W+W- with a hard, central and isolated photon in the final state, and are found to be compatible with the Standard Model prediction. The phot

Treatment of packaging board whitewater in anaerobic/aerobic biokidney

Whitewater from production of packaging board was treated in a combined anaerobic/aerobic biokidney, both in laboratory scale and pilot plant experiments. Both the laboratory experiments and the pilot plant trial demonstrate that a combined anaerobic/aerobic process is suitable for treating whitewater from a packaging mill. It is also possible to operate the process at the prevailing whitewater te

Product-Service Systems: reviewing achievements and refining the research agenda

This special issue on Product-Service Systems: reviewing achievements and refining the research agenda shows the progress that has been made in the PSS field in the last decade, including various national and international research projects and companies' initiatives, important achievements and gaps at theoretical and practical levels. Most of the papers can be of interest to practitioners, compan

Variability of shore and shoreline evolution

Shore and shoreline evolution both due to natural and human-induced causes or factors can be variable over a wide range of different temporal and/or spatial scales. Our capability to understand and especially predict this variability is still limited. This can lead to misinterpretation of coastal change information, which hampers informed decision making and the subsequent design and implementatio

Vårt sociala sammanhang har stor betydelse för vaBrandvägg describes how a group of firefighters, who consistently maintain that they are “practitioners and not theorists”, relate to various forms of language based knowledge and language based “knowledging” in their vocational training, which is based on problem based learning. From a sociocultural perspective to learning, and within the parameters of a didactic perspective with the focus on the

Temperature dependence of laser-induced hot luminescence of self-trapped excitons in solid xenon

Hot luminescence of self-trapped excitons in solid xenon has been investigated in a wide temperature range (from LHeT to 100 K), using X-ray and two-photon excimer laser (ArF and KrF) excitation. Hot luminescence of bulk Xe crystals of volume 2 cm(3) appears to be very sensitive to both the temperature and the quality of the samples, while its highest intensity has been registered under KrF laser

Closed-Loop Combustion Control of a Multi Cylinder HCCI Engine using Variable Compression Ratio and Fast Thermal Management

The current Spark Ignited (SI) engine equipped with three-way catalyst offers low emissions, but has low efficiency at part load, which results in unnecessarily high CO2 emissions. The Compression Ignited (CI) engines have higher efficiency and hence lower CO2 emissions, but suffer from higher Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) emissions, and no three-way catalyst can be used. Large

Assay of type-specific M antigens on whole group A streptococci

A novel radioimmunoassay of type-specific M antigens on whole group A streptococcal cells is described. Absorbed rabbit anti-M antisera directed against M types 12 and 49 were used for determining M antigens on intact bacterial organisms. Staphylococcal protein A labelled with 125I was used as an anti-antibody reagent. The absorbed antisera were tested against ten homologous and 48 heterologous se
