Potential effects of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor activator on LPS-induced lung injury in rats

Multiple factors contribute to the pathogenesis and prognosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), still requiring new therapeutic strategies and medications for the disease. The aim of the present study is to investigate the model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced chronic lung injury and hyperinflation and test therapeutic effects of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)

Heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine elicits similar antibody response as standard 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine in adult patients with RA treated with immunomodulating drugs.

The objectives of the study were to compare antibody response in immunosuppressed patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) after vaccination with heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) to that of RA patients and healthy controls vaccinated with 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) and to study the impact of disease and/or treatment characteristics and type of vaccine on antibody resp

Comparison of high-solids to liquid anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and green waste

Co-digestion of food waste and green waste was conducted with six feedstock mixing ratios to evaluate biogas production. Increasing the food waste percentage in the feedstock resulted in an increased methane yield, while shorter retention time was achieved by increasing the green waste percentage. Food waste/green waste ratio of 40:60 was determined as preferred ratio for optimal biogas production

In Search of Word Accents in Estonian Swedish

This study focuses on the word accent opposition in a lesser known and endangered variety of Swedish–Estonian Swedish. The variety has been described as not making the tonal distinction between Accent 1 and Accent 2 words, but no systematic acoustic phonetic investigation has been carried out previously to confirm these descriptions. As materials, disyllabic words from read sentences, spontaneous

An Experimental Protocol for Structural Characterization of Fe in Dilute Natural Waters

The properties of iron (Fe) complexes and compounds in the environment influence several central processes, e.g., iron uptake, adsorption/desorption of contaminants and nutrients, and redox transformations, as well as the fate of of natural organic matter (NOM). It is thus important to characterize Fe species in environmental samples. Synchrotron-based extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXA

Collective and noncollective states in (120)Te

High-spin states in (120)Te were populated in the reaction (80)Se((48)Ca, alpha 4n)(120)Te at a beam energy of 207 MeV and gamma-ray coincidences were measured using the Gammasphere spectrometer. The previously known level scheme is extended to higher spin and new interband transitions and side-feeding branches are established. Five highly deformed rotational bands, extending up to almost I = 50,

Structure of the Rh2O3(0001) surface

We have studied the (0001) surface termination of Rh2O3 on a Rh(111) single crystal using a combination of high resolution core level spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory. By exposing the Rh(111) to atomic oxygen we are able to grow Rh2O3 layers exposing the (0001) surface. The experiments support the theoretical predictions sta

Activation of tri(2-furyl)phosphine at a dirhenium centre: Formation of phosphido-bridged dirhenium complexes

Reaction of tri(2-furyl) phosphine (PFu(3)) with [Re-2(CO)(10) (n)(NCMe)(n)] (n = 1, 2) at 40 degrees C gave the substituted complexes [Re-2(CO)(10) (n)(PFu(3))(n)] (1 and 2), the phosphines occupying axial position in all cases. Heating [Re-2(CO)(10)] and PFu(3) in refluxing xylene also gives 1 and 2 together with four phosphido-bridged complexes; [Re-2(CO)(8) (n)(PFu(3))(n)(mu-PFu(2))(mu-H)] (n

Highly Efficient Class-C CMOS VCOs, Including a Comparison With Class-B VCOs

This paper presents two class-C CMOS VCOs with a dynamic bias of the core transistors, which maximizes the oscillation amplitude without compromising the robustness of the oscillation start-up, thereby breaking the most severe trade-off in the original class-C topology. An analysis of several different oscillators, starting with the common class-B architecture and arriving to the proposed class-C

Cdc42 and Rac1 in Pancreatic Tubulogenesis and Islet Formation

Tubes form the basic structure of several organs like lungs, kidneys, glandular organs like the pancreas, mammary and salivary glands. Tube formation involves a series of dynamic and interdependent cellular processes, including cytoskeletal reorganization, assembly of intercellular junctional complexes, and cell polarization. Understanding how cells polarize and coordinate tubulogenesis during org

De novo assembly of the dual transcriptomes of a polymorphic raptor species and its malarial parasite.

Studies of non-model species are important for understanding the molecular processes underpinning phenotypic variation under natural ecological conditions. The common buzzard (Buteo buteo; Aves: Accipitriformes) is a widespread and common Eurasian raptor with three distinct plumage morphs that differ in several fitness-related traits, including parasite infestation. To provide a genomic resource f

On modelling the global copper mining rates, market supply, copper price and the end of copper reserves

The world supply and turnover of copper was modelled using simple empirical estimates and a COPPER systems dynamics model developed for this study. The model combines mining, trade markets, price mechanisms, population dynamics, use in society and waste as well as recycling, into a whole world system. The degree of sustainability and resource time horizon was estimated using four different methods

The Sweden Cancerome Analysis Network - Breast (SCAN-B) Initiative: a large-scale multicenter infrastructure towards implementation of breast cancer genomic analyses in the clinical routine.

Breast cancer exhibits significant molecular, pathological, and clinical heterogeneity. Current clinicopathological evaluation is imperfect for predicting outcome, which results in overtreatment for many patients, and for others, leads to death from recurrent disease. Therefore, additional criteria are needed to better personalize care and maximize treatment effectiveness and survival.

Measurement of the charge asymmetry in top quark pair production in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the top-antitop production charge asymmetry A(C) is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb(-1) of pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are selected with a single lepton (electron or muon), missing transverse momentum and at least four jets of which at least one jet is identified as coming from a b-qua

Intercomparison of C-14 Analysis of Carbonaceous Aerosols: Exercise 2009

Radiocarbon analysis of the carbonaceous aerosol allows an apportionment of fossil and non-fossil sources of airborne particulate matter (PM). A chemical separation of total carbon (TC) into its subfractions organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) refines this powerful technique, as OC and EC originate from different sources and undergo different processes in the atmosphere. Although C-14 an
