Sexually violent effervescence : Understanding sexual assault among youth
Based on interviews with 104 young partygoers, this article examines sexual assaults that occur in the context of festive events. Focus is on how individuals describe their sexual victimization. Three experiential characteristics stand out in the victims’ accounts. First, the assaults are described as being characterized by an altered state of consciousness, primarily alcohol-related intoxication.
Bartenders as street-level bureaucrats : theorizing server practices in the nighttime economy
Most Western countries have laws that prohibit the serving of alcohol to intoxicated and underage patrons in nightlife venues such as pubs and nightclubs. Despite laws and the implementation of server training programs, several studies have shown that intoxicated patrons are still likely to be served. This think-piece article attempts to shed new light on the tendency among bartenders to overserve
The pleasures of drunken one-night stands : Assemblage theory and narrative environments
Background In this study, we use assemblage theory to investigate the link between alcohol use and one-night stands. Methods The data come from qualitative interviews conducted with 104 young participants in the night-time economy. Results We show that: (i) alcohol-fuelled sexual explorations (e.g. erotic fantasizing, flirting and sex) are of paramount importance for young partygoers; (ii) sexuali
Departies : conceptualizing extended youth parties
Every year, millions of young people travel away from home to party for days or weeks on end in permissive environments, such as music festivals, dance parties, and nightlife resorts. The studies that have been conducted on these extended youth parties have focused primarily on specific risk-taking behaviors, such as drug use and violence. Here, we scrutinize the research on extended youth parties
Pub crawls at a Bulgarian nightlife resort : A case study using crowd theory
Drawing on the classical crowd theories of Tarde, Le Bon, Durkheim, and Canetti, this article examines pub crawl crowds at the Bulgarian nightlife resort, Sunny Beach. The article argues that there are elements in classical crowd theory which can be used to advance the current research on tourist crowds such as those at pub crawls. The main strength of the theories lies in their ability to bring u
Quantitative flow ratio for immediate assessment of nonculprit lesions in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction—An iSTEMI substudy
Objectives: We evaluated the diagnostic performance of quantitative flow ratio (QFR) assessment of nonculprit lesions (NCLs) based on acute setting angiograms obtained in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) with QFR, fractional flow reserve (FFR), and instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR) in the staged setting as reference. Background: QFR is an angiography-based approac

Violent work environments : A survey of bouncers and their experiences of violence, stress and other work-related problems
Purpose Over the last decade a substantial pool of research has emerged on bouncers and their influence on the safety conditions in nightlife environments. Comparatively little, however, has been written on bouncers themselves and their working conditions. The purpose of this paper is to identify the perceived risks, stress and other work-related problems among bouncers working in Danish nightlife
Spatial and temporal aspects of intense attosecond pulses for pump-probe experiments
För att dessa experiment ska lyckas måste ljuspulsernas egenskaper noga studeras och styras för att dNuclear and electronic dynamics in atoms and molecules are the foundation of many physical processes and chemical reactions. Often, these dynamics take place on timescales so much shorter than those commonly encountered that they are called ultrafast. In order to study ultrafast phenomena, time-resolved techniques such as pump-probe experiments, involving ultrafast light pulses, are necessary. Fo

Prevention research at the centre for alcohol and drug research
Prevention is one of four core research areas at the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Research at Aarhus University in Denmark. This paper provides an overview of the prevention research which has been carried out at the Centre since its establishment in the beginning of the 1990s. Based on a review of all past and ongoing preventive research projects at the Centre, the paper suggests this research has
Drunken environments : A survey of bartenders working in pubs, bars and nightclubs
There is evidence that bartenders play a key role in respect of the health and safety of patrons in nightlife environments. However, little is known of how bartenders themselves are affected by the environments in which they work, especially with regard to their exposure to violence, pressure to drink and stress. We used a cross-sectional survey to assess the experiences of bartenders (n = 424) wo
Stirring up effervescence : an ethnographic study of youth at a nightlife resort
There is growing evidence that young tourists at nightlife resorts have a propensity for risk-taking. Based on ethnographic fieldwork at an international nightlife resort in Bulgaria, this article examines how guides help tourists lower their inhibitions and reach states of collective effervescence. Focus is on young guides and tourists from Denmark. The article argues that the guides use four bas
The Influence of Guides on Alcohol Consumption among Young Tourists at a Nightlife Resort
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess how participation in party activities with guides affects alcohol consumption among young tourists at an international nightlife resort. Methods: Prospective survey of 112 Danish tourists in Sunny Beach, Bulgaria, who were asked about their drinking and activities with guides on three separate nights out. Results: Participation in party activities wit
An exploratory prospective study of young people's drinking during a holiday
BACKGROUND Heavy drinking and drug use is increasingly recognised as a problem in relation to holidays at nightlife resorts. However, studies conducted on the subject to date have relied on retrospective accounts of drinking, and little is known about the course of drinking, consequences and experiences during such holidays. METHODS A prospective study was carried out in Sunny Beach, Bulgaria, of
Simulating nanoindentation of thin Cu films using molecular dynamics and peridynamics
Nanoindentation is a useful experimental method to characterize the micromechanical properties of materials. In this study molecular dynamics and peridynamics are used to simulate nanoindentation, with a spherical indenter targeting a thin single crystal Cu film, resting on an infinitely stiff substrate. The objective is to compare the results obtained from molecular dynamic simulations to those oNanoindentation is a useful experimental method to characterize the micromechanical properties of materials. Nightlife tourism : A mixed methods study of young tourists at an international nightlife resort
Drawing on data generated through quantitative and qualitative methods, this article explores the prevalence and experiences of substance use, casual sex, commercial sex, and health problems among young Danish tourists at an international nightlife resort in Bulgaria. The article argues that the risks the tourists take should not be interpreted as a symptom of nihilism, pathology, or escapist incl
Music and substance preferences among festival attendants
Purpose: This article aims to determine the prevalence of substance use among young festival-goers and the associations between preferences for different types of music and recent use of different types of licit and illicit drugs. Design/methodology/approach: The article is based on a cross-sectional survey of 1,787 young adults attending a music festival in Denmark. Associations between preferenc
