Runoff generation in a plough-drained cutover fen in Central Finland

The hydrology of a cutover fen was studied from May to October in 1995 and 1996. Rainfall equivalent depths were measured every 15 min and stream runoff was continuously monitored. Water table depths were measured bi-weekly during 1995 and continuously during 1996. Storm runoff was separated into different components; rain falling directly into channels and rapid groundwater response based on a co

Lifetime measurements in neutral and singly ionized vanadium

Radiative lifetimes of ten odd-parity levels of V I belonging to the 3d(3)4s4p and 3d(4)4p configurations and of 11 odd-parity levels of V II belonging to the 3d(3)4p configuration are reported. The lifetimes were measured with use of single-step excitation and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The neutral and singly ionized vanadium atoms were produced in a laser-induced vanadium plasma. (

Band-terminating states in Ag-101

Excited states of the neutron deficient Ag-101 nucleus have been investigated via the Cr-50(Ni-58, 3rho1alpha) heavy-ion induced reaction at 261 meV by use of in-beam spectroscopic methods. On the basis of the measured gammagamma-cincidence relations and angular distribution ratios high-spin bands have been extended up to I-pi = 35/2(+), 45/2((-)) and (49/2(-)). The negative parity states at the h

Att berätta i tid och rum : människans unika värde och dess upplösning i Dostoevskijs och Petrusevskajas berättarkonst

Taking Fëdor Dostoevskij’s and Ljudmila Petrusevskaja’s writings as its starting point, this dissertation explores two different forms of disintegration of worth. In both cases, a world is described where human beings have lost contact with a unique centre of worth – a position in space linked to an irrevocable course of events in time. In Dostoevskij, this disintegration takes place on the level

Multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations for intercombination lines in silicon-like ions

This paper reports on multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations for intercombination lines in highly charged silicon-like ions. Results for wavelengths, fine structure, transition rates, branching ratios and lifetimes are reported and compared with other theories and experiments. A review of the experimental situation is presented, and deviations from expected smooth trends along the sequ

Strong Differential Regulation of Serum and Mucosal IgA Responses as Revealed in CD28-Deficient Mice Using Cholera Toxin Adjuvant.

n this study, we show that costimulation required for mucosal IgA responses is strikingly different from that needed for systemic responses, including serum IgA. Following oral immunization with cholera toxin (CT) adjuvant we found that whereas CTLA4-H{gamma}1 transgenic mice largely failed to respond, CD28-/- mice developed near normal gut mucosal IgA responses but poor serum Ab responses. The lo

Protein H--a bacterial surface protein with affinity for both immunoglobulin and fibronectin type III domains

Several bacterial species express surface proteins with affinity for the constant region (Fc) of immunoglobulin (Ig) G. The biological consequences of the interaction with IgG are poorly understood but it has been demonstrated that genes encoding different IgG Fc-binding proteins have undergone convergent evolution, suggesting that these surface molecules are connected with essential microbial fun

Bile salts form lyotropic liquid crystals

A reinvestigation of the phase diagrams relative to some conjugated and non-conjugated bile salts in water has demonstrated the formation of lyotropic liquid crystalline phases, in contradiction with generally accepted statements. The phase behaviour is complex and the phase diagrams are unusual, compared to most surfactants and lipids. In particular, coexistence of liquid crystalline phases with

Non-invasive assessment of direction of right atrial activation during atrial fibrillation using correlation function analysis.

ECGs were recorded from three electrodes attached at the corners of an equilateral triangle positioned around the location of electrode V1. The atrial signal between QRST complexes was subjected to correlation function analysis to reveal differences in activation times between the electrode sites. The time differences found were used to calculate the direction of activation across the body surface

ETN:KRY

Inverse spectral problem for quantum graphs

The inverse spectral problem for the Laplace operator on a finite metric graph is investigated. It is shown that this problem has a unique solution for graphs with rationally independent edges and without vertices having valence 2. To prove the result, a trace formula connecting the spectrum of the Laplace operator with the set of periodic orbits for the metric graph is established.

Driftsstörningar av olika omfattning är ett kontinuerligt inslag i operatörsarbetet och snabba förändringar i risknivå är en central deStudies in process control automation show that manual control skills are important in handling situations where the automatic control system fails. The fact that these skills are particularly difficult to maintain and develop in automated production environments is usually described as one of the ironies of automation. This work explores new roles for computer support in developing and maintainin

Sensory characterization of polyester-based bottle material inertness using threshold odour number determination

Refillable polyester bottles, for example polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, are known to interact with chemicals. Aroma compounds from a product can be absorbed by the bottle material, remain after washing and remigrate when the bottle is reused, resulting in off-flavour of the new product. A certified reference material has recently been approved with which the chemical and sensory inertn

Simple Stability Criteria for Systems with Time-Varying Delays

This paper considers the problem of stability of linear feedback systems with time-varying but bounded delays. Simple but powerful criteria of stability, as well as a simple performance bound, are presented for both continuous-time and discrete-time systems. Using these criteria, stability can be checked in a closed loop Bode plot. This makes it easy to design the system for robustness.
