Neighbourhood crime and major depression in Sweden: A national cohort study

Background: The association between neighbourhood crime and major depression (MD) has been described before but previous studies may be limited by biases in self-reported data and the use of homogenous study populations. Our study aimed to examine the association between neighbourhood crime and clinically diagnosed MD among the immigrant and non-immigrant populations in Sweden. Methods: A retrospe

Quantifying Reagent Spreading by Cross-Borehole Electrical Tomography to Assess Performance of Groundwater Remediation

In situ remediation of contaminated groundwater often relies on the installation of a treatment zone (TZ) degrading the contamination. Zero-valent-iron (ZVI) is a type of reagent used for this purpose. Adequate delivery of ZVI in the whole target volume is particularly challenging and requires monitoring with high spatial resolution. We present a monitoring tool for imaging the dynamic spreading o

The role of blogs and news sites in science communication during the COVID-19 pandemic

We present a brief review of literature related to blogs and news sites; our focus is on publications related to COVID-19. We primarily focus on the role of blogs and news sites in disseminating research on COVID-19 to the wider public, that is knowledge transfer channels. The review is for researchers and practitioners in scholarly communication and social media studies of science who would like

From Subsistence to Commercial Producers : Processes of State-led Agrarian Change, Land Tenure Dynamics and Social Differentiation among Smallholders in Ghana.

While previous state policies in Ghana favoured commercialization by medium and large scale cultivators, there exists a new national commitment dubbed the Planting for Food and Jobs Policy that seeks to leverage on the cumulative productive potential of small farmers for susta

The galactic scale impact of feedback from individual stars

Feedback from stars is essential for the formation and evolution of galaxies. It is an energy source that drives gas motions and chemically enriches the galaxy by supplying metals. Without this stellar feedback, numerical galaxy simulations result in galaxies with little resemblance to those observed in our Universe. Modern galaxy simulations frequently reach a mass resolution of a few tens of sol

The social origins of democracy in Sweden: the role of agrarian politics

In discussions of Scandinavian democratisation, it is commonplace to argue that long-standing farmer representation in parliament and a lack of feudalism facilitated early democratisation. The present essay questions this interpretation in the Swedish case. It centres on a re-interpretation of farmer politics at the national level from the 1866 two-chamber parliament reform to the alliance betweenIn discussions of Scandinavian democratisation, it is commonplace to argue that long-standing farmer representation in parliament and a lack of feudalism facilitated early democratisation. The living standards of the labouring classes in Sweden, 1750–1900: Evidence from rural probate inventories

We present new estimates of the living standards among the rural labouring classes in Sweden from 1750 to 1900. Starting with a database of more than 1,000 probate inventories of rural, landless and semi-landless people from the years 1750, 1800, 1850 and 1900, we study the development for crofters in particular. In a sub-sample of 120 probate inventories we map in great detail the material items We present new estimates of the living standards among the rural labouring classes in Sweden from 1750 to 1900. Train2Wind - Or How Large Is an Infinite Wind Farm?

TRAIN2WIND is a PhD TRAINing school analysing enTRAINment in offshore WIND farms with computer models and experiments. By its very nature, a wind turbine extracts energy from the wind, which is replenished from the wind field on the sides and above due to the ambient turbulence. However, offshore the turbulence is lower, and wind farms are typically larger than onshore, therefore the wind can only

The basis for this are user studies with researchers from different disciplines in Germany, who were involved in an iterative software development process for the development of a scientometric visualisation in the ROSI project.

Eigenfactor

The Eigenfactor™ is a journal metric, which was developed by Bergstrom and his colleagues at the University of Washington. They invented the Eigenfactor as a response to the criticism against the use of simple citation counts. The Eigenfactor makes use of the network structure of citations, i.e. citations between journals, and establishes the importance, influence or impact of a journal based on i

International Conferences of Bibliometrics

Conferences are deeply connected to research fields, in this case bibliometrics. As such, they are a venue to present and discuss current and innovative research, and play an important role for the scholarly community. In this article, we provide an overview on the history of conferences in bibliometrics. We conduct an analysis to list the most prominent conferences that were announced in the news

ORKG : Facilitating the Transfer of Research Results with the Open Research Knowledge Graph

This document is an edited version of the original funding proposal entitled 'ORKG: Facilitating the Transfer of Research Results with the Open Research Knowledge Graph' that was submitted to the European Research Council (ERC) Proof of Concept (PoC) Grant in September 2020 (https://erc.europa.eu/funding/proof-concept). The proposal was evaluated by five reviewers and has been placed after the eva

The Relationship between the Language of Scientific Publication and its Impact in the Field of Public and Collective Health

The language of scientific publications is a crucial factor when seeking to reach an international audience, because it affects linguistic accessibility and the geographical reach of research results. English is the language of science and the fact that it can be understood by most readers represents an undeniable advantage. Moreover, the fact that a large proportion of Ibero-American research has

The h-index

The h-index is a mainstream bibliometric indicator, since it is widely used in academia, research management and research policy. While its advantages have been highlighted, such as its simple calculation, it has also received widespread criticism. The criticism is mainly based on the negative effects it may have on scholars, when the index is used to describe the quality of a scholar. The “h” mea

Openness trends in Brazilian citation data : factors related to the use of DOIs

Digital object identifiers (DOIs) are important metadata elements for indexing and interoperability, as well as for bibliometric studies in times of openness. This study analyses the use of DOIs in the cited references of articles by authors from Brazilian institutions, their possible influencing factors and differences among areas of knowledge. It measures the extent to which the citation dataset
