Shock and Naturalization : An Inquiry into the Perception of Modernity

Begrepp och objekt tycks inte längre sammanfalla, utan uppenbarar istället vad Adorno kallar deIn sociology shock is often seen as emblematic of modernity. However, while Benjamin and Simmel famously portray the big city crowd - and by extension modernity itself - as an arena of shock, shock sensations are notable for their absence in depictions of the crowd as well as of modernity as a whole in much contemporary literature. This is evident in depictions involving streets, trains, technolog

On the Thresholds of Generalized LDPC Convolutional Codes Based on Protographs

A threshold analysis of terminated generalized LDPC convolutional codes (GLDPC CCs) is presented for the binary erasure channel. Different ensembles of protograph-based GLDPC CCs are considered, including braided block codes (BBCs). It is shown that the terminated PG-GLDPC CCs have better thresholds than their block code counterparts. Surprisingly, our numerical analysis suggests that for large te

Vilka reg

Computer Aided Planning of Production and Working Environment

Success of design projects depends on their quality from a technical and economic point of view and on the quality of their implementation and use. This paper discusses a computer aided planning (CAP) technique and its applicability and quality in both these respects. One version of the CAP-technique is developed for planning of industrial working environments and another version for planning of r

Unreliable probabilities, paradoxes, and epistemic risk

Risk has become one of the main topics in fields as diverse as engineering, medicine and economics, and it is also studied by social scientists, psychologists and legal scholars. But the topic of risk also leads to more fundamental questions such as: What is risk? What can decision theory contribute to the analysis of risk? What does the human perception of risk mean for society? How should we jud

Processing coordinated verb phrases: the relevance of lexical-semantic, conceptual, and contextual information towards establishing verbal parallelism

This dissertation examines the influence of lexical-semantic representations, conceptual similarity, and contextual fit on the processing of coordinated verb phrases. The study integrates information gleaned from current linguistic theory with current psycholinguistic approaches to examining the processing of coordinated verb phrases. It has been claimed that in coordinated phrases, one conjunct m

Modification of flavonoid content and photosynthesis by ultraviolet-B radiation. Atrazine-tolerant and -sensitive ultivars of Brassica napus.

De senaste tjugo åren har ozonlagret tunnats ut därför att ozonförstörande ämnen, t.ex. freLevels of ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280-320 nm) radiation reaching the Earth´s surface increase due to stratospheric ozone depletion. In this thesis the effect of enhanced UV-B radiation was studied on the atrazine-tolerant mutant Stallion, susceptible to photoinhibition, and the atrazine-sensitive cultivar Paroll of Brassica napus (oilseed rape). Photosynthetic parameters were studied with chlorophyll
