Loss of heterozygosity at BRCA2 in a ductal carcinoma in situ and three invasive breast carcinomas in a family with a germline BRCA2 mutation
We have examined a family with a germline BRCA2 mutation in three cases of invasive breast cancer and one case of ductal carcinoma in situ ( DCIS). Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) has been demonstrated at the BRCA2 locus in all cases. This result may suggest that the germline mutation in BRCA2 is the initiating step of DCIS and support the theory that DCIS is a precursor of invasive breast carcinoma

Multi-component carbon isotope evidence of early Holocene environmental change and carbon-flow pathways from a hard-water lake in northern Sweden
A 9000-year carbonate-rich sediment sequence from a small hard-water lake in northernmost Sweden was studied by means of multi-component stable carbon isotope analysis. Radiocarbon dating of different sediment fractions provides chronologic control and reveals a rather constant hard-water effect through time, suggesting lake has remained hydrologically open throughout the Holocene. Successive depl
Different effects of salmeterol, formoterol and salbutamol on cholinergic responses in the ferret trachea
1 In the present study, the inhibitory effects of the selective beta 2-adrenoceptor agonists, salmeterol, formoterol and salbutamol, have been investigated on contractions of ferret trachea induced both by endogenous and exogenous acetylcholine. The aim of the study was to evaluate quantitative and/or qualitative differences in response which may indicate both pre-and post-junctional sites of acti

Periarticular bone in rheumatoid arthritis versus arthrosis. Histomorphometry in 103 hip biopsies
Histomorphologic differences of the periarticular bone in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthrosis (OA) may be of importance for long-term prosthetic fixation. We have evaluated bone specimens, obtained during total hip replacement from an acetabular and a femoral biopsy site, in 42 RA-hips and 61 OA-hips. In both groups the bone turnover was increased in the acetabulum compared to that in the
Plasma bikunin: half-life and tissue uptake
Bikunin is a chondroitin sulfate-containing plasma protein synthesized in the liver. In vitro, it has been shown to inhibit proteases and to have additional activities, but its biological function is still unclear. Here we have studied the dynamics of plasma bikunin in rats and mice. A half-life of 7 +/- 2 min was obtained from the time course of the decrease of the plasma level of bikunin followi

Chloroplast membranes retard fat digestion and induce satiety: effect of biological membranes on pancreatic lipase/co-lipase
Human obesity is a global epidemic, which causes a rapidly increased frequency of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. One reason for obesity is the ready availability of refined food products with high caloric density, an evolutionarily new event, which makes over-consumption of food inevitable. Fat is a food product with high caloric density. The mechanism for regulation of fat intake has theref
The "Goldilocks Effect" in Cystic Fibrosis: identification of a lung phenotype in the cftr knockout and heterozygous mouse
Background: Cystic Fibrosis is a pleiotropic disease in humans with primary morbidity and mortality associated with a lung disease phenotype. However, knockout in the mouse of cftr, the gene whose mutant alleles are responsible for cystic fibrosis, has previously failed to produce a readily, quantifiable lung phenotype. Results: Using measurements of pulmonary mechanics, a definitive lung phenotyp

The conflicts concerning the preservation or destruction of the deserted church of Mårup in Denmark is followed from the the moment in 1928, when the church became redundant, untill 2004. The protection of the church is in conflict with the protection of the eroding cliff, the church as a symbol in conflict with the church as a source material, and the local people in conflict with central authori
pH dependency of ligand binding to cellobiohydrolase 1 (Cel7A) - Affinity, selectivity and inhibition for designed propranolol analogues
The affinity and enantioselectivity have been determined for designed propranolol derivatives as ligands for Cel7A by capillary electrophoresis (CE) at pH 7.0. These results have been compared to measurements at pH 5.0. In agreement with previous studies, the affinity increased at the higher pH. However, the affinity was not as dependent of the ligand structure at pH 7.0 as at pH 5.0, and the sele

Nonfatal stroke, cardiac disease, and diabetes mellitus in hypopituitary patients on hormone replacement including growth hormone
Context: The impact of long-term GH replacement on cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus in hypopituitary patients is unknown. Objective: The incidence of nonfatal stroke and cardiac events, and prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus ( T2D) and cardioprotective medication were compared between cohorts of GH-deficient (GHD) patients and population controls. Design and Pa
