Picture Viewing and Picture Description: Two Windows on the Mind.

I min avhandling kopplar jag ihop två ämnesområden, lingvistik In this thesis, I connect two disciplines, linguistics and vision research, and combine two methods, spoken language protocols and eye movement protocols, in order to cast light on the underlying cognitive processes. In a series of studies, I investigate the processual aspects of picture viewing and picture description. On the one hand, eye movements reflect human thought processes. It is easy to

Utilization efficiency of nitrogen associated with riverine dissolved organic carbon (> 1 kDa) by two toxin-producing phytoplankton species

Riverine high molecular weight dissolved organic material (HMWDOM) >1 kDa contains varying amounts of nitrogen. This nitrogen is partly available for growth of phytoplankton and can therefore contribute to algal bloom formation. However, there is a lack of knowledge on species-specific utilization efficiency of this HMWDOM-bound nitrogen. A specific question is whether this nitrogen can be used by

Interaction of levosimendan with cadiac troponin C in the presence of cardiac troponin I peptides.

The interaction between troponin C (TnC) and troponin I (TnI) is essential for the regulation of muscle contraction. There are several binding sites for TnI on TnC that are differentially occupied depending on the phase of the contraction/relaxation cycle. TnI and TnC interact in an antiparallel fashion with each other. The C-domain of cTnC and the N-domain region of cTnI(residues 33–70) always in

Modelling of Turbulent Flow and Heat Transfer Phenomena in Pipes of District Heating Systems Including Transient Temperature Propagation

Modern district heating systems, a carbon lean technology, involves dual usage of the energy due to the possibility to redistribute heat derived from numerous sources, such as industrial processes, refuse incineration, geothermal sources and combined heat and power plants. Such heat source flexibility facilitates the optimal usage of energy resources by varying the amount of purchased heat dependi

Response of Si p-i-n diode and Au/n-Si surface barrier detector to heavy ions

Pulse height versus energy calibrations of a Si p-i-n diode and a Au-/n-Si surface barrier detector have been studied for heavy ions with atomic number (Z(1)) from 3 to 79 in a range from 0.1 to 0.8 MeV per nucleon as a function of bias voltage and detector tilting angle. The detector response is simultaneously measured using a time of flight-energy elastic recoil detection analysis set-up with re

Below ground carbon turnover and greenhouse gas exchanges in a sub-arctic wetland.

Here we present results from a field experiment in a sub-arctic wetland near Abisko, northern Sweden, where the permafrost is currently disintegrating with significant vegetation changes as a result. During one growing season we investigated the fluxes of CO2 and CH4 and how they were affected by ecosystem properties, i.e., composition of species that are currently expanding in the area (Carex rot

Coronary Heart Disease and Erectile Dysfunction

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a common condition associated with a high mortality. There is now growing evidence that erectile dysfunction (ED) in men may be a suitable marker of sub-clinical cardiovascular disease, identifying patients at high risk for future CHD. We investigated the association between CHD risk factors and ED during a period of 25 years, in a population based cohort of men, a

Postoperative Intrathecal Pain Treatment in Children

För att kunna ge en optimal smärtlindring ärSelective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) is an effective operations method that successfully decreased the degree of spasticity with long lasting beneficial effects for children with spastic diplegia. Children undergoing SDR are postoperatively in severe pain, a pain related to both the extensive surgical exposure with multilevel laminotomy and the nerve root manipulation. To give an optimal pain relief,

New non-invasive method for intima-media thickness and intima-media compression measurements

Intim a-media thickness (IMT) is considered as a valuable marker of early atherosclerosis. We suggest a new algorithm for simultaneous measurements of absolute diameter at diastole, distension (diameter change), IMT at diastole and the intima-media compression (IMC) with a new fast, robust, high-resolution, and automatic algorithm utilizing the ultrasonic gray-scale information. The new algorithm

Radiation-associated sarcomas are characterized by complex karyotypes with frequent rearrangements of chromosome arm 3p

Ionizing radiation is a well-known risk factor for sarcoma development. To investigate whether radiation-associated sarcomas are characterized by chromosome aberrations that distinguish them from de novo sarcomas, we identified those patients in our series of more than 500 cytogenetically abnormal sarcomas that fulfilled the following criteria: (1) each patient should have been irradiated for anot

How common is severe pulmonary hypertension after pediatric cardiac surgery?

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension may result in significant morbidity and mortality after pediatric cardiac surgery. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence and outcome of severe pulmonary hypertension, defined as a ratio of pulmonary to systemic arterial pressure equal to or greater than 1.0, after cardiac surgery in children. METHODS: Data from all children younger than 18 ye

Two new attacks on the self-shrinking generator

The self-shrinking generator was introduced in 1994. It is based on the idea behind the shrinking generator and despite its simplicity it has remained remarkably resistant to efficient attacks. Several known plaintext attacks have been proposed on the generator, some operating on a short keystream and others requiting a longer sequence to succeed. In this paper, two new attacks on the self-shrinki

Abundance of owls and bramblings Fringilla montifringilla in relation to mast seeding in south-eastern Sweden.

We investigated the relationship between mast seeding in beech Fagus sylvaticus and oak Quercus spp., and the occurrence of the rodent-dependent predators Tengmalm's Owl Aegolius funereus, Long-eared Owl Asio otus and Tawny Owl Strix alaco in south-eastern Sweden (Blekinge) 1992-2000. We also compared available data on seed production with data on winter flocks of Brambling Fringilla montifringill

The spring migration of two bar-tailed godwit Limosa lapponica populations in Sweden.

The regional distribution and timing of spring passage of the Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica in Sweden is reported (160,300 observed birds in 1976-1995). Birds were observed in most provinces, with the highest concentrations in southernmost Sweden. Timing of passage was bimodal, with distinct peaks in the middle and end of May, suggesting that two separate populations are passing. The peak in
