Three-dimensional in situ imaging of single-grain growth in polycrystalline In2O3:Zr films
Strain and interactions at grain boundaries during solid-phase crystallization are known to play a significant role in the functional properties of polycrystalline materials. However, elucidating three-dimensional nanoscale grain morphology, kinetics, and strain under realistic conditions is challenging. Here, we image a single-grain growth during the amorphous-to-polycrystalline transition in tec
Effect of food intake on echocardiographic measurements in healthy elderly
Objective: This study evaluates whether food intake affects systolic and diastolic echocardiographic measurements in healthy seniors. Methods: Thirty healthy subjects 65–70 years of age were investigated with echocardiography, at fasting and then 30, 90, and 180 min after a meal. Results: After 30 min the biggest changes were seen in left ventricular wall stress and myocardial performance index wi
Spark Ignition - Searching for the Optimal Spark Profile
The impact of different spark designs on the ignition and combustion stability is studied using a 13-liter CNG fueled heavy duty spark ignited engine to search for the “optimal” spark design. Experimental results show that robust ignition can be achieved using a significantly shorter spark duration and lower energy than expected. A capacitive discharge ignition (CDI) system enabled to separately c
Yeast and fruit fly mutual niche construction and antagonism against mould
A goal in insect–microbe ecology is to understand the mechanisms regulating species associations and mutualistic interactions. The spotted wing drosophila Drosophila suzukii develops in ripening fruit, unlike other drosophilids that typically feed on overripe fruit, and is associated with the yeast Hanseniaspora uvarum. We hypothesized that D. suzukii and H. uvarum engage in niche construction lea
Alternative splicing modulation by G-quadruplexes
Alternative splicing is central to metazoan gene regulation, but the regulatory mechanisms are incompletely understood. Here, we show that G-quadruplex (G4) motifs are enriched ~3-fold near splice junctions. The importance of G4s in RNA is emphasised by a higher enrichment for the non-template strand. RNA-seq data from mouse and human neurons reveals an enrichment of G4s at exons that were skipped

Tau and neurofilament light-chain as fluid biomarkers in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Clinical trials in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) will require biomarkers for use as outcome measures.METHODS: To evaluate total tau (t-tau), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCHL1) and neurofilament light-chain (NfL) as fluid biomarkers in SCA3, ATXN3 mutation carriers (n = 143) and controls (n = 172) were clinically as

Distinguishing tumor from healthy tissue in human liver ex vivo using machine learning and multivariate analysis of diffuse reflectance spectra
The aim of this work was to evaluate the capability of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy to distinguish malignant liver tissues from surrounding tissues, and to determine whether an extended wavelength range (450–1550 nm) offers any advantages over using the conventional wavelength range. Furthermore, multivariate analysis combined with a machine learning algorithm, either linear discriminant analy

Confidence levels and likelihood terms in IPCC reports : a survey of experts from different scientific disciplines
Scientific assessments, such as those by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), inform policymakers and the public about the state of scientific evidence and related uncertainties. We studied how experts from different scientific disciplines who were authors of IPCC reports, interpret the uncertainty language recommended in the Guidance Note for Lead Authors of the IPCC Fifth AssessScientific assessments, such as those by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), inform policymakers and the public about the state of scientific evidence and related uncertainties.
