Evaluation of cell recycling in continuous fermentation of enzymatic hydrolysates of spruce with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and on-line monitoring of glucose and ethanol
The maximum growth rate of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 96581, adapted to fermentation of spent sulphite liquor (SSL), was 7 times higher in SSL of hardwood than the maximum growth rate of bakers' yeast. ATCC 96581 was studied in the continuous fermentation of spruce hydrolysate without and with cell recycling. Ethanol productivity by ATCC 96581 in continuous fermentation of an enzymatic hydrolys
The high-resolution infrared spectrum of isoxazole vapor between 800 and 1700 cm(-1)
The Fourier transform gas-phase IR spectrum of isoxazole, C3H3NO, between 550 and 1700 cm(-1) was measured with a resolution of ca. 0.003 cm(-1). Ten fundamental bands in the region 800-1700 cm(-1) have been analyzed by the Watson Hamiltonian model to yield upper state spectroscopic constants. A number of local resonances have been identified in the bands and explained qualitatively, and the unobs
Toward an understanding of the Hofmeister effect: A computer game with dipoles and an ion
The solvation of ions in dipolar lattice droplets has been studied using Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that for small dipoles the solvation behavior is similar to that expected from a dielectric model. For larger dipoles, large deviations from dielectric behavior are observed. For the larger dipoles, it is found that only the first layers solvate the ion and that the more-distant dipoles te
Studies of the efficiency of granulated blast furnace slag and limestone filler in mortars - long term strength and cloride penetration
This report is the first part of the project Use of industrial by-products and filler in concrete - long term properties/durability. The aim is to improve the knowledge of long term properties/durability of cement and concrete produced using industrial by-products/fillers in order to promote an efficient, safe, reliable and increased use of such types of materials. The results presented in the rep

Effects of metabolic inhibition on cytoplasmic calcium and contraction in smooth muscle of rat portal vein
Contractions in the rat portal vein, evoked by spontaneous action potentials or depolarizing high-K+ solution, are rapidly and reversibly inhibited by hypoxia or respiratory blockade. Intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i) was measured using Fura-2 to evaluate the effects of metabolic blockade on excitation-contraction coupling. Spontaneous contractions were associated with transient increases in [C
Biodistribution and pharmacokinetics of 125I/131I pair-labelled biotinylated chimeric BR96 in colon carcinoma isografted rats
Invariance properties of the negative binomial Levy process and stochastic self-similarity.
We study the concept of self-similarity with respect to stochastic time change. The negative binomial process (NBP) is an example of a family of random time transformations with respect to which stochastic self-similarity holds for certain stochastic processes. These processes include gamma process, geometric stable processes, Laplace motion, and fractional Laplace motion. We derive invariance pro
Size determination of free metal clusters by core-level photoemission from different initial charge states
We present the study of free nanoscale lead clusters using photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron radiation. Pb 5d core-level spectra reveal the presence of different initial charge states of the clusters created by the magnetron-based source. We suggest a method for determining the cluster size from the charge-dependent core level binding energies. Both the core-level and the valence spectra
Det grymma landet mellan modernism och postmodernism: Reflektioner över 1970-talet
From virtue to decency
In her work on virtue ethics Rosalind Hursthouse has formulated an Aristotelian criterion of rightness that understands rightness in terms of what the virtuous person would do. It is argued here that this kind of criterion does not allow enough room for the category of the supererogatory and that right and wrong should rather be understood in terms of the characteristic behavior of decent persons.
Phenotypic expression of factor H mutations in patients with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome.
Thromboprophylaxis in emergency surgery
Except for hip fracture surgery, emergency surgery has been only exceptionally studied concerning thromboprophylaxis. There are, however, several reasons to believe the frequency to be fairly high and that the patient group would be in need of prophylaxis. This paper discusses various emergency situations and also gives the design for an ongoing controlled study on the effect of postoperative star
Direct estimates of C : N ratios of ectomycorrhizal mycelia collected from Norway spruce forest soils
Direct estimates of C:N ratios of ectomycorrhizal (EM) mycelia growing in situ in forest soils have been obtained for the first time. The mycelial samples were collected from sand-filled mesh bags that were buried in the soil and incubated for 12-18 months in two Norway spruce forests in southern Sweden. At harvest the mesh bags were heavily colonized and the mycelia were extracted from the sand w

Microflora of the gallbladder related to duration of acute cholecystitis
The microflora of the bile and wall of the gallbladder was prospectively investigated in 104 nonselected consecutive patients treated with early cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis after an average hospital stay of 1.8 days. The chief purpose was to relate the findings of cultures to duration of the illness. Special attention was paid to anaerobic isolation techniques. The cultures yielded 107
Development and evaluation of non-invasive ultrasonic methods for arterial characterization
As cardiovascular diseases have been the most common cause of mortality in the western world for decades, the demand for appropriate diagnostic methods is obvious. To facilitate the examination non-invasive methods are preferable since they do not require sensors within the circulation system. Ultrasonic Doppler is a frequently used technique in non-invasive hemodynamic studies. To increase the a
Pair correlation in neutron drip line nuclei
The Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equation in a simplified model is solved in coordinate space with the correct asymptotic boundary conditions, in order to study the pair correlation in nuclei close to the neutron drip line. The occupation probability obtained in the HFB approach for lower-l orbits decreases considerably already when the binding energy of the corresponding Hartree-Fock (HF) one-pa
Vetandet präglas dock av ett okritiskt accepterande av samarbetets fördelar, samtidigt som många verksamheter visar att resultaten av samarCo-operation is highly valued in Swedish welfare work and joint efforts within and between healthcare and welfare organizations is not new in Sweden. For decades the authorities have been trying to organize and coordinate various social and medical efforts in the public sector at a central level. This thesis is focusing on the meaning of co-operation between professionals belonging to different or
