Measurements of azimuthal anisotropies of jet production in Pb+ Pb collisions at sNN =5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The azimuthal variation of jet yields in heavy-ion collisions provides information about the path-length dependence of the energy loss experienced by partons passing through the hot, dense nuclear matter known as the quark-gluon plasma. This paper presents the azimuthal anisotropy coefficients v2, v3, and v4 measured for jets in Pb+Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC.

Genetically Determined Reproductive Aging and Coronary Heart Disease: A Bidirectional 2-sample Mendelian Randomization

Background: Accelerated reproductive aging, in women indicated by early natural menopause, is associated with increased coronary heart disease (CHD) risk in observational studies. Conversely, an adverse CHD risk profile has been suggested to accelerate menopause. Objectives: To study the direction and evidence for causality of the relationship between reproductive aging and (non-)fatal CHD and CHD

The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on severe asthma care in Europe: Will care change for good?

Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has put pressure on healthcare services, forcing the reorganisation of traditional care pathways. We investigated how physicians taking care of severe asthma patients in Europe reorganised care, and how these changes affected patient satisfaction, asthma control and future care. Methods In this European-wide cross-sectional study, patient

Local Voltage Control in Distribution Networks using PI Control of Active and Reactive Power

Overvoltage is becoming increasingly prevalent in distribution networks with high penetration of renewable distributed energy sources (DERs). Local control of converter-based resources is a flexible and scalable method to prevent this growing issue. Reactive power is used for voltage control in many local control schemes. However, the typical range of R/X ratios for distribution power lines indica

MHCtools – an R package for MHC high-throughput sequencing data : Genotyping, haplotype and supertype inference, and downstream genetic analyses in non-model organisms

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) plays a central role in the vertebrate adaptive immune system and has been of long-term interest in evolutionary biology. While several protocols have been developed for MHC genotyping, there is a lack of transparent and standardized tools for downstream analysis of MHC data. Here, we present the r package mhctools and demonstrate the use of its functions

Experimental evaluation of normal and shear delamination in cellulose-based materials using a cohesive zone model

An experimental study to characterize properties controlling delamination of paperboard is presented. The normal and shear traction–separation laws are measured and evaluated using a double cantilever beam (DCB) and a split double cantilever beam (SCB) specimen. The DCB-experiments provides normal separation data in good agreement with results using alternative experimental techniques. From the me

Immunomodulation therapy offers new molecular strategies to treat UTI

Innovative solutions are needed for the treatment of bacterial infections, and a range of antibacterial molecules have been explored as alternatives to antibiotics. A different approach is to investigate the immune system of the host for new ways of making the antibacterial defence more efficient. However, the immune system has a dual role as protector and cause of disease: in addition to being pr

Enforcement Powers of the United Nations Security Council : Enforcement Regimes for the Protection of Animals in Wartime

The United Nations Security Council has the authority to adopt binding decisions and to authorise military means to ensure international peace and security. Whereas the Security Council is not typically associated with animal protection, wildlife issues have become an international security concern. Wildlife poaching and trafficking of wildlife products finance criminal networks and armed groups.

Modeling Scientific Revolutions: Gärdenfors and Levi on the Nature of Paradigm Shifts

Gärdenfors' and Levi's theories of rational belief changes will be compared to Kuhn's theory of scientific progress. Gärdenfors' proposal to analyze scientific revolutions in terms of big changes in epistemic entrenchment will be criticized for not being able to represent the important constituting function of the paradigms. Parts of Levi's theory that are incompatible with Ku

Förhållandet mellan barns populära status, individuella bearbetningsstil och arbetsminneskapacitet

This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between perceived popularity, social information processing and working memory. With the intentions of examining popularity 209 (98 female, 111 male) children in second and fourth grade were presented with a roster of their classmates and were to nominate whom they liked and whom they disliked. To study working memory capacity a working memo

Grässjön var före 1909 en del av den tills då mycket större VielånThere are records of lowering of the water level in a lot of the Swedish lakes from the middle of the 1700th century. The aim was gaining more areable land to meet the needs of more food to support the expanding population. In areas with top soil which contents of clay or loam as in the southwest of Scania in southern Sweden this was proven to be a successful way expanding the total outcome of the

Design and synthesis of novel 3-triazolyl-1-thiogalactosides as galectin-1, -3 and -8 inhibitors

Galectins are galactoside-binding proteins that play a role in various pathophysiological conditions, making them attractive targets in drug discovery. We have designed and synthesised a focused library of aromatic 3-triazolyl-1-thiogalactosides targeting their core site for binding of galactose and a subsite on its non-reducing side. Evaluation of their binding affinities for galectin-1, -3, and

Causality of anthropometric markers associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome : Findings of a Mendelian randomization study

Introduction Using body mass index (BMI) as a proxy, previous Mendelian randomization (MR) studies found total causal effects of general obesity on polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Hitherto, total and direct causal effects of general- and central obesity on PCOS have not been comprehensively analyzed. Objectives To investigate the causality of central- and general obesity on PCOS using surrogat

Prompt and non-prompt J/ψ production cross sections at midrapidity in proton-proton collisions at √s = 5.02 and 13 TeV

The production of J/ψ is measured at midrapidity (|y| < 0.9) in proton-proton collisions at s = 5.02 and 13 TeV, through the dielectron decay channel, using the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The data sets used for the analyses correspond to integrated luminosities of Lint = 19.4 ± 0.4 nb−1 and Lint = 32.2 ± 0.5 nb−1 at s = 5.02 and 13 TeV, respectively. The fraction of non-prompt J/

Small-molecule activation of OGG1 increases oxidative DNA damage repair by gaining a new function

Oxidative DNA damage is recognized by 8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) DNA glycosylase 1 (OGG1), which excises 8-oxoG, leaving a substrate for apurinic endonuclease 1 (APE1) and initiating repair. Here, we describe a small molecule (TH10785) that interacts with the phenylalanine-319 and glycine-42 amino acids of OGG1, increases the enzyme activity 10-fold, and generates a previously undescribed b,d-lyase enz
