Clinical experience of urine D-arabinitol/L-arabinitol ratio in the early diagnosis of invasive candidiasis in paediatric high risk populations
In 2 prospective studies, we previously reported on the early and accurate diagnosis of invasive candidiasis by determining the D-arabinitol/L-arabinitol (DA/LA) ratio in urine in neutropenic children with cancer at the paediatric oncology unit (POU) and in premature infants at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at our hospital. In this retrospective study at the same units, we report how the
Morphology phenotype and ultrastructure of fibroblastic cells from normal and neuropathic human detrusor: Absence of myofibroblast characteristics
Purpose: Fibroblasts are functionally diverse and fibroblastic cells with smooth muscle-like characteristics (myofibroblasts) regulate smooth muscle activity in certain tissues. The presence of myofibroblasts has been reported in the bladder with important implications for normal function and detrusor overactivity. We assessed fibroblastic cell characteristics to discern features suggesting a myof
Inhibition of kainic acid binding to glutamate receptors by extracts of Gastrodia
S-(4-hydroxybenzyl)glutathione was isolated as the major principle responsible for the inhibition of the in vitro binding of kainic acid to brain glutamate receptors by water extracts of the plant Gastrodia elata. The affinity (IC50 value) of the compound is slightly lower compared to glutamate and glutathione.
Women - a neglected risk group for atherosclerosis and vascular disease
Women are a neglected group for cardiovascular disease. Whereas young women tend to have lower incidences of coronary artery disease, stroke and myocardial infarctions than men, the situation changes drastically at menopause, after which women are at greater risk than men. Despite this, women at all ages receive less treatment, less attention and not enough information about health risks. Most ris
Clinical and serological variation between patients infected with different Hepatitis B virus genotypes.
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has eight genotypes which have distinct geographical distributions. Studies comparing differences in the clinical outcomes of infections caused by strains with genotype-related variations in the HBV genome have largely compared genotypes B and C and genotypes A and D but not all four genotypes. The present study included 196 HBV-infected patients attending an infectious dis
High-spin structures and band termination effects in Cd-104
High-spin states in the neutron-deficient isotope Cd-104 were populated using the Cr-50(Ni-58,4p)Cd-104 reaction at a beam energy of 250 MeV The level scheme has been extended using triple gamma-ray coincidences to a spin of 29h and an excitation energy of 18.2 MeV. Several collective structures involving the excitation of h(11/2) neutrons have been observed to spins approaching 30h. The high-spin
Economic Growth and Fiscal Policy
Popular Abstract in Swedish Avhandlingen behandlar ekonomisk tillväxt och finanspolitik. De trThis thesis deals with the two subjects economic growth and fiscal policy. The first three chapters after the introduction are theoretical approaches to the determination of long-run growth. In each of these chapters, the ability of fiscal policy to influence long-run growth is examined as well. The next chapter relates the development of GDP in the long run to the financial system. The final chap
Investigation of binding event perturbations caused by elevated QCM-D oscillation amplitude
We report measurements with the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) technique, with focus on how the shear oscillation amplitude of the sensor surface influences biorecognition binding events. Technically, this is made as reported recently ( M. Edvardsson, M. Rodahl, B. Kasemo, F. Hook, Anal. Chem., 2005, 77( 15), 4918-4926) by operating the QCM in dual frequency mode;

Lund University has no policies on electronic publishing or self-archiving. Neither does the university require any kind of annual standardized or centralized publication lists from faculties or departments. Electronic publishing and self-archiving is a very decentralized affair where departments or divisions make their own decisions. To increase the use of LU:research, the central university arch
Photochemistry of diiodomethane in solution studied by femtosecond and nanosecond laser photolysis. Formation and dark reactions of the CH2I-I isomer photoproduct and its role in cyclopropanation of olefins
Femtosecond and nanosecond photolysis of CH2I2 in acetonitrile at an excitation wavelength of 266-nm yield the ground-state CH2I-I isomer product in similar to70% quantum yield. High isomer formation quantum yields (> 70%) were measured also in n-hexane, dichloromethane, methanol, and ethanol using nanosecond photolysis. The CH2I-I product is formed biphasically within similar to15 ps after excita
A fibronectin-binding protein from Streptococcus equi binds collagen and modulates cell-mediated collagen gel contraction
The N-terminal fragment (FNZN) of the fibronectin-binding protein FNZ from Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemieus was investigated as to effects on murine cell interactions with extracellular matrix proteins, FNZN bound to immobilized fibronectin (FN) and native, but not denatured, collagen type I. FNZN had no effect on primary adhesion of cells from the murine myoblastic C2C12 cell line to i
Modified Mediterranean diet and survival: EPIC-elderly prospective cohort study
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether adherence to the modified Mediterranean diet, in which unsaturates were substituted for monounsaturates, is associated with longer life expectancy among elderly Europeans. DESIGN: Multicentre, prospective cohort study. SETTING: Nine European countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom). PARTICIPANTS: 74,607 men an

A comparison of peripheral nerve regeneration in acellular muscle and nerve autografts
Regeneration of the rat sciatic nerve through acellular muscle and nerve autografts was evaluated 6-28 days postoperatively by the sensory pinch test, immunocytochemical staining for neurofilaments, and light and electron microscopy. Data points generated by the pinch test were plotted against postoperative time periods and by the use of regression analysis the initial delay period for muscle graf
Prediction of clinical cardiovascular events with carotid intima-media thickness: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Background— Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is increasingly used as a surrogate marker for atherosclerosis. Its use relies on its ability to predict future clinical cardiovascular end points. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of data to examine this association. Methods and Results— Using a prespecified search strategy, we identified 8 relevant studies and compared study des
Identification of the peroxy adduct in multicopper oxidases by a combination of computational chemistry and extended X-ray absorption fine-structure measurements
We have developed a computational method that combines extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) refinements with the integrated quantum mechanical and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method. This method allows us to obtain a structure of a metal site inside a protein that is compatible with both EXAFS data and QM calculations (i.e., that is chemically reasonable). Thereby, the QM/MM calculatio
Paleoclimate: Toward solving the UV puzzle
Decreases in stratospheric ozone caused by chlorofluorocarbons released into the atmosphere lead to an increase in harmful ultraviolet (UV) light received at Earths surface. But UV and ozone also vary naturally as a result of changes in solar activity. In their Perspective, Rozema et al. chart recent efforts to elucidate the relation among the solar UV spectrum, ozone concentrations, and harmful s
