A validation study of an interviewer-administered short food frequency questionnaire in assessing dietary vitamin D and calcium intake in swedish children

Vitamin D and calcium are essential nutrients with a range of biological effects of public health relevance. This study aimed to validate a short food frequency questionnaire (SFFQ) against a three-day food record (3D record), assessing the intake of vitamin D and calcium in Swedish children during wintertime. In a double-blinded, randomized food-based intervention study on the effect of feeding d

Androgen receptor expression and breast cancer mortality in a population-based prospective cohort

Purpose: The increase in clinical trials with androgen receptor (AR)-targeting drugs emphasizes the need of clarifying the role of AR expression in different breast cancer subtypes. AR confers good prognosis in estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer, but its role in ER-negative (ER−) breast cancer is unclear. The aim of this study was to elaborate on previous findings of a differential pro

Automated Control of Multiple Software Goals using Multiple Actuators

Modern software should satisfy multiple goals simultaneously: it should provide predictable performance, be robust to failures, handle peak loads and deal seamlessly with unexpected conditions and changes in the execution environment. For this to happen, software designs should account for the possibility of runtime changes and provide formal guarantees of the software's behavior. Control theory i

Who controls carbon emissions from transport and who cares? : Investigating the monitoring of environmental sustainability from a logistics service provider’s perspective

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the environmental impact of logistics service provider (LSP) activities in the light of customer priorities and the fragmentation of the road haulage industry in Europe. It also explores the extent to which LSPs can actually monitor the environmental impact of logistics activities in the supply chain (SC).Design/methodology/approachThe research is bas

Assessment of MRI contrast agent concentration by quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) : application to estimation of cerebral blood volume during steady state

Objective: One major issue in dynamic susceptibility contrast MRI (DSC-MRI) is to accurately determine contrast agent (CA) concentration, since T2* relaxivity in vivo is generally unknown and varies between blood and tissue. In this study, quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) was used for quantification of CA concentration. Materials and methods: A DSC-MRI protocol, including phase data acqui

Comorbidity does not predict long-term mortality after total hip arthroplasty

Background and purpose — In-hospital death following total hip arthroplasty (THA) is related to comorbidity. The long-term effect of comorbidity on all-cause mortality is, however, unknown for this group of patients and it was investigated in this study. Patients and methods — We used data from the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register, linked to the National Patient Register from the National Board o

Sclerosing mesenteritis and mesenteric panniculitis - clinical experience and radiological features

Background: Sclerosing mesenteritis (SM) is sometimes used as an umbrella-term for idiopathic inflammatory conditions in the mesentery. Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is a radiological finding and its relation to clinical SM is not fully understood. The aims of this study were to determine whether any correlation could be found between the radiological findings and the clinical disease course. Metho

The potential of 223Ra and 18F-fluoride imaging to predict bone lesion response to treatment with 223Ra-dichloride in castration-resistant prostate cancer

Purpose: The aims of this study were to calculate bone lesion absorbed doses resulting from a weight-based administration of 223Ra-dichloride, to assess the relationship between those doses and corresponding 18F-fluoride uptake and to assess the potential of quantitative 18F-fluoride imaging to predict response to treatment. Methods: Five patients received two intravenous injections of 223Ra-dichl

Cities and Economic Growth : A Review

Presently, there is no single, coherent theory on the causality between cities and economic growth, only a fragmented set of theories. Current patterns and trends for the relationship between cities and economic growth, however, suggest that a full understanding of contemporary processes will not be achieved by relying on the tools of one discipline alone, or by focusing on a single level of analyPresently, there is no single, coherent theory on the causality between cities and economic growth, only a fragmented set of theories. Repeat Immigration: A Previously Unobserved Source of Heterogeneity?

AIMS:Register data allow for nuanced analyses of heterogeneities between sub-groups which are not observable in other data sources. One heterogeneity for which register data is particularly useful is in identifying unique migration histories of immigrant populations, a group of interest across disciplines. Years since migration is a commonly used measure of integration in studies seeking to unders

Nitrogen deposition changes ectomycorrhizal communities in Swiss beech forests

Atmospheric pollution has implications for the health and diversity of temperate forests covering large parts of central Europe. Long-term elevated anthropogenic deposition of nitrogen (N) is driving forest ecosystems from the limitation by N to other nutrients and is found to affect tree health and ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF), which most trees depend on for nutrient uptake. However, the consequen

Quantifying the effects of land use and climate on Holocene vegetation in Europe

Early agriculture can be detected in palaeovegetation records, but quantification of the relative importance of climate and land use in influencing regional vegetation composition since the onset of agriculture is a topic that is rarely addressed. We present a novel approach that combines pollen-based REVEALS estimates of plant cover with climate, anthropogenic land-cover and dynamic vegetation mo

Anodization of Al(100), Al(111) and Al Alloy 6063 studied in situ with X-ray reflectivity and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

We present results from the anodization of single crystal Al(100) and Al(111) surfaces and the aluminum alloy AA 6063 studied in situ by X-ray reflectivity and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We observe that the anodic oxide layer grows linearly with the anodization potential and that the thicknesses are similar for all samples. However, the thicknesses obtained from X-ray reflectivity are
